New Orleans is once again the nation's murder capital after briefly losing the title.
Fresh FBI statistics show that with 64 killings per 100,000 people in 2008, New Orleans had the highest per capita murder rate in the nation, well ahead of second-place St. Louis, which had 47 murders per 100,000 people.

St. Louis drops to second place.
Good to hear things are back to normal. I guess.
So the FEMA housing in Houston finally closed?
Forgot the /s.
It’s terrible news, really. Just sounds like some old problems are coming back.

Find a heavily Democratic city and you will have high murder rates and poverty.
sooner or later, NO is going to run out of victims. then, in theory, at least, the murders will begin preying on each other. that’s the only way this problem is going to get solved.
I lived and worked in New Orleans and Baton Rouge (whose murder rate was only slightly lower than NO) for 9 years. I never once felt afraid or threatened. The tourist areas are heavily patrolled by NOPD on horseback or in cars. Most of the murders are gang/drug related.
Sadly if it’s like most urban areas, new Baraqqis are being born at a furious clip, on our nickle.
According to the US Census data, Ray Nagin has his "Chocolate City," and this article shows us that it is complete with lots of strawberry sauce.
Someone recently posted an article about the Obama plan to deposit a multitude of muslims from arabic countries into the New Orleans area.
Should make for such a wonderful town to visit.
A while back when I was an intern at a company, my team lead said that she was taking her son to New Orleans the next week. I had just met her that day, so I was not inclined to tell her my opinions of the city.
When she came back, she told us of an armed robbery her and her son had to endure as they were entering their hotel room one evening.
You've got a tagline there...
Hey, we're off to a good start, though, for this year! Next year-- #1!
Lived there from 1975-1977, only once afraid. 4:00am alone looking for a cab on Canal Street. Kept hearing footsteps. Twenty two and stupid.
What’s the exit strategy, Dems?
New Orleans is back! Congrats to them on their achievement. /s
If you don't live in the hood or go there to buy drugs, most cities are pretty safe.
Looks like the creatures have finally returned from Houston.
The chickens came home to roost.
Literally.
True ... however, there's this elephant in the room you're ignoring.
Bush’s fault! /sarc
My first visit to New Orleans, 1981.
Went with a friend who’s cousin lived there. We got lost coming into town, so we found a pay phone and he called her for directions.
The conversation went like this:
Cousin: OK, where are you?
Friend: On XYZ Street, the 1000 block.
Cousin: Wait....you are on the 1000 block of XYZ street?
Friend: Yeah, how do we get to your house from here?
Cousin: Hang up the phone and get back in your car NOW. Lock the doors and drive about 10 miles and call me from there.
Friend: Just tell me how to.....
Cousin: Do it NOW. *click*
Reminds me of the scene from “Vacation” while driving through East St Louis:
Ellen: Clark? What are you doing?
Clark: Just relax, Ellen.
Ellen: This is so dangerous! We have no business being in an area like this!
Clark: This is a part of America we never get to see.
Ellen: That’s good!
Clark: No, that’s bad. We can’t close our eyes to the plight of the cities. Kids, are you noticing all this plight? This will just make us appreciate what we have.
*gunshot* *scream*
Clark: Roll ‘em up!
Well what do you expect when a bunch of crazed Amish get together, huh? Good thing the Swedes, Finns, Dutch and Norwegians finally moved out though. They were the really bad ones.

Yet something else that Detroit doesn’t have to boast about anymore.
New Orleans is once again the nation’s murder capital after briefly losing the title.
As my favorite Author once stated, “New Orleans is a sewer with a high crime rate”. But hey, things are lookin up for Detroit.
I worked for an insurance co in NO after Katrina, everything you heard about it was true. An awful place.
I worked in N.O. a while after Katrina. A really awful place/people.
What did you find so appalling about the people? Since I find myself in that particular group, I'm curious."
Not Baltimore.
Rusty: “Do you think these guys know the Commodores?”
