U.S. concerned salvo strategy could overwhelm missile defenses
WASHINGTON U.S. officials said Iran and North Korea are focusing on the use of sustained fire to overcome Israeli and US missile defense systems.
The officials said the development of ballistic missile defense systems must protect against missile salvos.
"An additional concern is North Korea's and Iran's repeated demonstrations of salvo launches, indicating large ballistic missile attack raid sizes must be considered in developing the BMDS [ballistic missile defense system]," U.S. Missile Defense Agency director Patrick O'Reilly said.

Then why did Obama cut Missile Defense funding!?
Obama is a joke in the intel community.
We already have defense against missile salvos. The Nuclear Triad has worked perfectly since the 1950’s. The foundation of our tiered missile defense systems is: you try to nuke us, and we’ll nuke you back even harder.
This administration is staffed by complete idiots.
what missile defense?
Obama won’t even turn on the radar to track the missiles
Yet the dipsh*t pretending to be CIC is slashing missile defenses and other high tech weaponry.
I’m by no means an expert, but vector coordinates from incoming to outgoing missiles should be roughly 180 degrees different.
B.U.M.P.!
The downside is that radar and other systems might be blinded by some of these types of blasts.
There is also work on an airborne laser. But it would take a fleet of a number of aircraft with the lasers to be effective in defending against a missile attack.
Finally, in our own missile tests, they were near flawless with the exception of a "miss" by the USS Grace Hooper...
Iran and NKorea do not need to fire nuclear tipped missiles...
I still think that the biggest danger will come from an EMP. In these modern times a couple of strategically detonated EMP weapons (high altitude nukes) will destroy every unshielded electronic device within range. It would take decades to restore that much fried equipment and we would be joining our peace loving muzzie friends in the glorious 7TH century.
Yeah, let them know our weak points. Good job
What an idiotic statement. They may not need to actually fire them, but ultimately they need the ability to fire nuclear-tipped missiles. That is why they are testing them. You think they just need to send some conventional explosive to Los Angeles? What good would that do? A nuclear missile can do a lot more damage, even in a near-miss scenario. They know that there is a good chance that they will all die when they attack, and they need as effective an attack as possible to make it worth it. And it's the Grace HOPPER.
A boomer parked in the Indian Ocean and one parked in the Sea of Japan could easily rein destruction down on both of these festering sewers within 5-10 minutes and put a stop to any further launches.
Although I doubt our Beloved Leader has the balls to do much of anything except contact the UN and demand they protest those mean people that are vaporizing our cities and installations.
Against a sane, or even semi-rational opponent, an assured second strike goes a long way towards preventing an attack.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m big on BDM. In fact I think one of the biggest long term negative impacts of the Obama administration is the loss of full blown development.
Our new strategic plan seems to be to assume the fetal position as rapidly as possible.
“Obama is a joke in the intel community.”
And not just in the US intel community, but in numerous foreign intel communities. Barry has yet to have realized this...
I am not sure your point here... If you read Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising, it talks about "Vampire attacks" on our carrier groups (by the Soviet Union).
The SDI, or known as "Star Wars", looked into the possibility of using conventional warhead with the explosive power of an H-bomb to intercept ICBM's.
You seem to be talking strictly about ICBM's.
The article talks about Ballistic Missile Technology -- very high speed missiles versus the slow speed of cruise missiles.
An ICBM is a Ballistic Missile, but other missiles that are not ICBM are in fact Ballistic Missiles...
You are correct as far as this goes. Ironically IMO the godless North Korean Commies are a whole lot more nuttier and trigger-happy, than the “whacko fanatic” Mullahs in Iran. The Norks are isolated and have nothing to lose, while the Mullahs are within reach to become a powerful player in the greater region.
Can’t be too concerned. Obama wants to scrap missile defense.
Yes it is and it's policy of unilateral disarmament.
It takes North Korea weeks to get a single missile prepped and ready for launch, how can they salvo anything? As for Iran, nothing that they have can come close to the U.S.
Given the current state of affairs, Iran or North Korea would be beyond insane to launch offensive ballistic missiles at other countries or U.S. strategic assets without expecting a nuclear response. If we don’t state that in no uncertain terms, we are just as nuts.
If they launch at targets, don’t we have to assume they are sending big payloads?
No we won’t. It will be a big mess, but at least it will make the drive by’s stfu.
UH, What if that is what these loons really want? Or do you think we are dealing with rational people here?
Ever wonder what you say to a suicide bomber? Stop or I will shoot seems to be a little ineffective.
"Multiple Kill Vehicle (MKV) program to engage multiple enemy warheads from one defensive missile. Terminated because of its significant technical challenges."
Thats because this Country doesn’t have the guts to ATTACK FIRST. and since that is the case we try and compensate by building defenses that will allow US to show the world that “They stared it”.
The NKs won’t have anything to salvo if its a radioactive junkpile.
A boomer parked in the Indian Ocean and one parked in the Sea of Japan could easily rein destruction down on both of these festering sewers within 5-10 minutes and put a stop to any further launches.
x act LEEEE
The answer is simple, in the first defensive salvo fire a second strike nuclear punch to shut down the second salvo.
It is not the US or Israeli interest to sit and take missile strikes from a strictly defensive position. After the first salvo is launched a full state of war exists.
For instance, if Israel sees a hundred missiles incoming, they can not wait to see if the ones that get through the screen are nuclear or chemical. There will be no second chance if they are as Israel is only 50 miles wide and 350 long.
Once those incoming missiles show on radar, Israel must launch all available planes as a nuclear response to remove the attacking nation. This was not needed or desired before the Islamic nations became nuclear powers, but now that they are, it must be assumed that Israel will be completely destroyed in the second strike mop up.
Iran and Pakistan raised the stakes in the war to come, and will have to pay the dealer if their card comes up. Elections and Retoric has its price.
If NK fires a missile on a trajectory that will hit Alaska, the US will have to fire a missile with a trajectory of NK’s capitol city.
Once Kim finishes his test and mounts the ability to fire multiple missiles at once, the USA must fire not one missile in return, but one missile for every launch point in that country. Effectivly destroying the nation in one strike. The point is not tit for tat, but defense of our people. How many bad guys are you willing to kill to keep your child alive, one or as many as is necessary to defend your child?
IMHO the next missile test by NK should be answered by a missile test by the US. We fire one missile in return that lands 16 dummy warheads in a circle around the nation. Then tell them next launch, we load nukes and it will be cities, not borders. Declare them a threat and warn them a limited state of war now exists.
Yes, it knows.
Can you imagine the size of a 10 million ton warhead with conventional explosives? Would be one impressive launch! -grin-
