As more states take up the debate on same-sex marriage, some advocates of legalization are taking a very specific lesson from California, where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dominated both fundraising and door-knocking to pass a ballot initiative that barred such unions.
With the battle moving east, some advocates are shouting that fact in the streets, calculating that on an issue that eventually comes down to comfort levels, more people harbor apprehensions about Mormons than about homosexuality.
"The Mormons are coming! The Mormons are coming!" warned ads placed on newspaper Web sites in three Eastern states last month. The ad was rejected by sites in three other states, including Maine, where the Kennebec Journal informed Californians Against Hate that the copy "borders on insulting and denigrating a whole set of people based on their religion."
"I'm not intending it to harm the religion. I think they do wonderful things. Nicest people," said Fred Karger, a former Republican campaign consultant who established Californians Against Hate. "My single goal is to get them out of the same-sex marriage business and back to helping hurricane victims."
The strategy carries risks for a movement grounded in the concept of tolerance. But the demographics tempt proponents of same-sex marriage: Mormons account for just 2 percent of the U.S. population, and they are scarce outside the West. Nearly eight in 10 Americans personally know or work with a gay person, according to a recent Newsweek survey. Only 48 percent, meanwhile, know a Mormon, according to a Pew Research Center poll....

Think how effective the media/schools/government black out on how devastating the homosexual lifestyle is.
Completely ignoring any moral argument against homosexuality it is a health care nightmare that does enormous psychological damage as well.
I often see Mormon missionaries riding their bicycles around town, as they go about their missionary business. I've never noticed any of them mugging anyone, or knocking off a liquor store, or speeding through a school zone.
Nor have I seen them hang Sarah Palin in effigy, nor getting in people's faces and intimidating them, nor spreading AIDS, etc.
Nope. This is going to backfire on the homosexuals. Sort of like Ø trying to pimp Rush Limbaugh. Should have left well-enough alone, as they say.
So the head of Californians Against Hate is running what amounts to a hate campaign against the Mormons.
BWA HAHAHAHAHAHA
I personally know about 6 gays, and avoid all but one of them. One of them is a defrocked priest who showed up at a party I was at with a teenager. I let the filthy perv have it right there. "Gay" is not an ethnicity, it is all about behavior. And boy do some of them go way over the edge.
Californians in general voted against them, blacks and hispanics voted against them big time, Christians in general voted against them, so their response is to go after Mormons. They’ll demonize Mormons, and use that prejudice to try to overcome natural moral law.
Catholic ping!
“One of them is a defrocked priest who showed up at a party I was at with a teenager. “
Who was with the teenager?
I also like this little lie: The strategy carries risks for a movement grounded in the concept of tolerance.
Can you imagine typing that with a straight face?
They'll tolerate you until you cross them.

This will backfire on the gays. All this ad will do is generate curiosity about Mormonism.
The ad will motivate people to find out more about the Mormon Church, and a certain percentage of those investigating this church will **join** it!

In other words they’re only “great” when they’re supporting a cause you agree with.
I do not agree with Mormanism (in fact, I don’t think that Mormans are Chistians by any reasonable definition.)
Having said that, Mormans practice their religion peacefully, don’t cause problems in society due to their religious beliefs, and have as much right as anyone else to practice their religion.
We’re a country founded on the idea that people of different religious beliefs should be able to live together in peace, and everyone is free to follow their own religious beliefs.
“My single goal is to get them out of the same-sex marriage business and back to helping hurricane victims.”
wow. talk about control-freaks. I would say Karger should be helping hurricane victims, but I wouldn’t want to wish that on hurricane victims.
Gee Fred, ... if you were really against 'Hate', why would you encourage people to stay in a lifestyle that destroys physically, and condemns spiritually? 'Californians Against Hate' apparently hate the body AND the soul ...
Fleeting pleasures, regardless the consequences, must be his organization's definition of love ...
Bully for you Fred...
Does this fellow have a list of causes that Mormons ARE allowed to support, and ARE NOT? Appears so.
25,000 pings
Lol, you made a funny.
Hmmm?
Please allow me ..... "Think how effective the media/schools/government black out on how devastating the homosexual DEATHSTYLE is."
Yeah. Religion shouldn't be involved with anything concerning MORALITY, right? Just keep handing out the free food.
FReepmail.
The black community is overwhelming against gay marriage. But the gays don’t dare attack blacks (don’t want to be racist, you know) so they make the Mormons the boogie men who are holding back gays.
Let’s do the math. How many blacks are there in this country as oppose to how many Mormons are in this country? I’m willingly to bet that there are many more blacks in this country, most of whom are against gay marriage. Yet, you won’t hear any same sex marriage advocates attacking blacks.
This hypocrisy reminds of the Carrie Prejean controversy. Miss Prejean has the same views of same sex marriage as Obama, yet Barry receives little or criticism in the press while Prejean gets trashed relentlessly by the libs.
The morons are coming; the morons are coming...
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Hollywood and the media have already tried to demonize the Mormons - just like they have with the Catholics.
It’s not a coincidence. It’s a battle.
“...congregations were read his letter urging that “you do all you can” to pass the California initiative, known as Proposition 8 ...”
In many churches, congregations are read letters urging that “you do as little as you can”, if it involves politics or public policy.
“We’re upside down on our image,” said Lawrence, who organized Mormon volunteers in California, where on a typical Saturday 25,000 turned out to knock on doors. “People have misperceptions of us because of ignorance, because of the history of polygamy, and because we organize quickly, which scares some people.”
the other method:
“We’re upside down on our image,” said many church leaders, who organize volunteers throughout the country, where on a typical Saturday 25,000 spend the afternoon watching baseball games. “People have misperceptions of us because of complacency, because of the history of cynicism, and because we organize slowly, which discourages some people.”
Normally I can’t stand to see those guys at my door...but the next time they come by I think I will kiss them!
Some of my best friends are Mormons.
None of my friends are queer.

Oh I can add to that......One time I had to stop at our local Mormon church...I can’t remember why. While I was there on business a person a cross the street, who was not a church member, car broke down. These people went over and helped the person without being asked. They went over and got out jumper cables and were doing what they could. I was impressed. Okay, I don’t agree with their doctrine, but I do agree with their Christ-like actions. I will give them that.
This shows how perverse our society has become when being a Mormon brings out more condemnation and discrimination than being a homosexual. I don’t even think the Mormons recruit as hard as the homosexuals do.
Well, they can’t go after the Muslims. That would be intolerant.
Guys everywhere do that, guys will also be the ones that jump out of their vehicles to help push you through the interesection when your car dies, it is what we do whether we are religious or not, it is primarily a blue collar thing though.
“Normally I cant stand to see those guys at my door...but the next time they come by I think I will kiss them!”
Er, uh, are you talking about the Mormons, or... well....
I am sorry, but you made me laugh so hard I had drinking water going coming out of my nose. LOL
I will not give up my occasional swear words and I refuse to quit drinking fresh ground coffee, but I will support the Mormons on this issue all the way to the bank.
tooo funny...
I don't see how, 81% of white Evangelicals voted for prop 8 as did 58% of non-white religious voters, with 65% of Protestants and 64% of Catholics voting for the measure.
California has 6% Black and 2% Mormon population, this is clearly a Christian decided issue.
They did not at my church! This was at the spaghetti dinner last November. The guys just ran out on me. Finally a Nun came out and helped me after I had to call AAA. How lame.
Excellent comeback. LOL
Have a great weekend.
I don’t know about your church but having spent decades in the nights and on the roads of America I know that as scary as a couple of scruffy, single guys in a beat up old car are at two in the morning on a cold, rainy night, they are just about the only ones that will ever help a man in need when conditions are bad.
Everyone will help a woman in need if the light is good enough to know that she is a woman.
I have even stopped to help a man change a flat, the once or twice that I saw one that was just too well dressed for the quick 5 to 7 minute but dirty chore.
Sorry, bad grammar. The defrocked priest Rick (approx 42 years old) was with a teenage boy.
