'The Mormons Are Coming!' (Supporters of Same-Sex Marriage Trumpet the Church's Work Against It )
On Faith (Washington Post) ^ | 5/29/2009 | Karl Vick

Posted on 05/29/2009 2:10:57 PM PDT by Pyro7480

As more states take up the debate on same-sex marriage, some advocates of legalization are taking a very specific lesson from California, where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints dominated both fundraising and door-knocking to pass a ballot initiative that barred such unions.

With the battle moving east, some advocates are shouting that fact in the streets, calculating that on an issue that eventually comes down to comfort levels, more people harbor apprehensions about Mormons than about homosexuality.

"The Mormons are coming! The Mormons are coming!" warned ads placed on newspaper Web sites in three Eastern states last month. The ad was rejected by sites in three other states, including Maine, where the Kennebec Journal informed Californians Against Hate that the copy "borders on insulting and denigrating a whole set of people based on their religion."

"I'm not intending it to harm the religion. I think they do wonderful things. Nicest people," said Fred Karger, a former Republican campaign consultant who established Californians Against Hate. "My single goal is to get them out of the same-sex marriage business and back to helping hurricane victims."

The strategy carries risks for a movement grounded in the concept of tolerance. But the demographics tempt proponents of same-sex marriage: Mormons account for just 2 percent of the U.S. population, and they are scarce outside the West. Nearly eight in 10 Americans personally know or work with a gay person, according to a recent Newsweek survey. Only 48 percent, meanwhile, know a Mormon, according to a Pew Research Center poll....

Just when you thought they couldn't go any lower... This may cause all those Christians who are suspicious of Mormons to be more sympathetic of them.

more people harbor apprehensions about Mormons than about homosexuality.

Think how effective the media/schools/government black out on how devastating the homosexual lifestyle is.

Completely ignoring any moral argument against homosexuality it is a health care nightmare that does enormous psychological damage as well.

"more people harbor apprehensions about Mormons than about homosexuality."

I often see Mormon missionaries riding their bicycles around town, as they go about their missionary business. I've never noticed any of them mugging anyone, or knocking off a liquor store, or speeding through a school zone.

Nor have I seen them hang Sarah Palin in effigy, nor getting in people's faces and intimidating them, nor spreading AIDS, etc.

Nope. This is going to backfire on the homosexuals. Sort of like Ø trying to pimp Rush Limbaugh. Should have left well-enough alone, as they say.

So the head of Californians Against Hate is running what amounts to a hate campaign against the Mormons.

I personally know about 6 gays, and avoid all but one of them. One of them is a defrocked priest who showed up at a party I was at with a teenager. I let the filthy perv have it right there. "Gay" is not an ethnicity, it is all about behavior. And boy do some of them go way over the edge.

Californians in general voted against them, blacks and hispanics voted against them big time, Christians in general voted against them, so their response is to go after Mormons. They’ll demonize Mormons, and use that prejudice to try to overcome natural moral law.

This will backfire on the gays. All this ad will do is generate curiosity about Mormonism.

The ad will motivate people to find out more about the Mormon Church, and a certain percentage of those investigating this church will **join** it!

I do not agree with Mormanism (in fact, I don’t think that Mormans are Chistians by any reasonable definition.)

Having said that, Mormans practice their religion peacefully, don’t cause problems in society due to their religious beliefs, and have as much right as anyone else to practice their religion.

We’re a country founded on the idea that people of different religious beliefs should be able to live together in peace, and everyone is free to follow their own religious beliefs.

The black community is overwhelming against gay marriage. But the gays don’t dare attack blacks (don’t want to be racist, you know) so they make the Mormons the boogie men who are holding back gays.

Let’s do the math. How many blacks are there in this country as oppose to how many Mormons are in this country? I’m willingly to bet that there are many more blacks in this country, most of whom are against gay marriage. Yet, you won’t hear any same sex marriage advocates attacking blacks.

This hypocrisy reminds of the Carrie Prejean controversy. Miss Prejean has the same views of same sex marriage as Obama, yet Barry receives little or criticism in the press while Prejean gets trashed relentlessly by the libs.

The gays think it will turn evangelicals against Mormons. That will backfire - people see through it for what is and they're not discussing traditional marriage, a goal to which people of faith are committed.

It’s not a coincidence. It’s a battle.

“We’re upside down on our image,” said Lawrence, who organized Mormon volunteers in California, where on a typical Saturday 25,000 turned out to knock on doors. “People have misperceptions of us because of ignorance, because of the history of polygamy, and because we organize quickly, which scares some people.”

the other method:
“We’re upside down on our image,” said many church leaders, who organize volunteers throughout the country, where on a typical Saturday 25,000 spend the afternoon watching baseball games. “People have misperceptions of us because of complacency, because of the history of cynicism, and because we organize slowly, which discourages some people.”

Oh I can add to that......One time I had to stop at our local Mormon church...I can’t remember why. While I was there on business a person a cross the street, who was not a church member, car broke down. These people went over and helped the person without being asked. They went over and got out jumper cables and were doing what they could. I was impressed. Okay, I don’t agree with their doctrine, but I do agree with their Christ-like actions. I will give them that.

The gays think it will turn evangelicals against Mormons.

I don't see how, 81% of white Evangelicals voted for prop 8 as did 58% of non-white religious voters, with 65% of Protestants and 64% of Catholics voting for the measure.

California has 6% Black and 2% Mormon population, this is clearly a Christian decided issue.

I don’t know about your church but having spent decades in the nights and on the roads of America I know that as scary as a couple of scruffy, single guys in a beat up old car are at two in the morning on a cold, rainy night, they are just about the only ones that will ever help a man in need when conditions are bad.

Everyone will help a woman in need if the light is good enough to know that she is a woman.

I have even stopped to help a man change a flat, the once or twice that I saw one that was just too well dressed for the quick 5 to 7 minute but dirty chore.

That spaghetti dinner is very popular in the community those men may not have been church members now that I think of it. I saw a lot of people there that I knew were not even Catholic. That spaghetti dinner raises money for the church school and has been going on as long as the school has been there, plus the spaghetti is VERY GOOD. People come and eat then take some for take out. Now that I think of it...the fact that the Nun help me....and she was a church member, tell me that these guys more than likely did not go to our church which is more lame but still I did make friends with the Nun so that was cool.
