He’s a full-blown Grahamite at this point. Lost cause. Somebody needs to drop him in Nuevo Laredo at about 2 A.M. on a Friday night. ‘Get tough or die’ should be the new GOP motto.
No we don't. You can go hold his hand and sing kumbaya with him. Take some feather pillows and beanbags for the big gala.
Winner!
Most refreshing post of the day.
You are correct that he and others should ignore the baiting by the media. It’s ok to point out that Rush & Newt aren’t elected officials, but no need to go overboard with by condemning them, imo.
They are serving a much needed service by bringing attention to these statements by Sotomayor. I say “much needed” because we never know whether or not our elected officials will speak up and, if they do speak up, whether or not they will shut up at the first criticism from Dems.
What all the “elected officials” need to focus on and discuss when they are asked these leading questions is what THEY, as elected officials, intend to do and why.
They need to let those who aren’t “elected officials” speak for themselves.
And to think I once wanted to go work for this tool. (and I live in California)
I’m extremely disappointed in Cornyn.

I agree on all points.
I think ALL Republicans and conservatives need to stick to only gentle and constructive criticism of others on our side. That includes poster on FR, who have a habit of bashing Republicans for the crime of not sounding as (ineffectively) rapidly partisan as they would like.
Lets focus on the daily sins/crimes of the Democrats and encouarge the Republicans to speak the truth on it...

You didnt answer my question:
How would you convince an open-minded moderate who may have voted for Obama that this nominee is a mistake?
If you refuse to consider the question, you are playing to lose, not win.
I'm not interested in convincing "open minded" fools about their mistakes.
Also, you're a smug ass by attempting to dictate that I play to lose by merely refusing to consider your question. How many elections have you won lately with open minded moderates, smart ass?
Of course they did.
Wild animals never show a weakling mercy.
There is the right way and the wrong way to win on the Sotomayor issue ... the wrong way is get caught in the swirl of name-calling (against Cornyn, Rush, Sotomayor etc.)
... the right way is this: Nail Sotomayor and Obama from the high-road:
http://spectator.org/archives/2009/05/29/no-patty-cake-please
“The answer lies in the duty to conduct high-toned debate for the benefit of the public. If full, open, fair, respectful debate doesn’t sway public opinion enough to start swaying senators against Sotomayor, then she’ll be confirmed. But if Republican leaders don’t insist on full, open, fair and respectful debate, and if they don’t enter the debate with a firm and justifiable conviction that Sotomayor is legitimately unfit to be on the Supreme Court, then they will have again sunk to the level of Old Maid players — and weak ones even by the standards of that genteel game.”
“I’m not interested in convincing “open minded” fools about their mistakes.”
Right. You’re not interested in winning the debate with the wider public. why not? why not care about winning hearts and minds?
“you’re a smug ass by attempting to dictate that I play to lose by merely refusing to consider your question.”
It’s merely an observation. Either you care about how the GOP wins over the electorate or you dont ... if you dont, you are conceding the next election to the Dems. So why the bloody hell should anyone who *is* interested in having the GOP win in 2010 listen to you, if you dont care about them winning?
To put it another way, the challenge, if you *care* about winning is:
- Find a way to convince 60% of Americans to oppose Sotomayor’s nomination.
- Find a way to turn this nomination fight into an opportunity to win back 5 more senate seats for the GOP, so obama doesnt put 3 more like her on the bench over the next 4 or 8 years.
“How many elections have you won lately with open minded moderates, smart ass?”
- You win elections by winning people to your issues
- The moderate voters are the swing voters. If they vote GOP, the GOP wins. if they vote Dem, the Dems win.
- Ignoring these facts is playing to lose. If you are dont care about any of the 53% of voters who went Obama staying on the Dem side, then Dems have a permanent majority.
How many elections have you won lately with open minded moderates running?
I'll answer it for you- ZERO.
Go shill your GOP boilerplate crap to those mystery moderate swing voters you have a heart throb for. Conservatives aren't buying it anymore.
Your question is a no-op -
I have no interest in running/helping moderates win elections.
I am NOT talking about RUNNING moderates, I am talking about CONVINCING the middle-of-road VOTING electorate on the issues, specifically the Sotomayor issue.
Big difference!
Now go ahead - how are we going to get Sotomayor to the 60% unfavorable rating?
So you will be fully satisfied if after 3 months of calling Sotomayor a ‘racist’ and other names, it only marginalizes the right and she’s at 60% approval like the Oba-fuhrer.
huh.
Then why bother venting spleen on this at all?
I’ll vent my spleen to show the stark distinction between conservatism and socialism in lieu of delivering luke warm responses to appease a voting demographic that has no interest in voting for republicans anyway. You start running yourself ragged after the 60% that never materializes in enough strength for you at the voting booth. Then we’ll see who is marginalized.
