Commentary: Don't Go To War Over Sotomayor
CNN ^ | 5/28/09 | Ed Rollins

Posted on 05/28/2009 11:15:12 AM PDT by steve-b

Almost everybody cheers for the underdog -- maybe not those born to upper-class standing with great advantages, but those of us who weren't always want the little guy to be victorious.

We want hard work and extra effort to be rewarded. Standing at the front of the East Room of the White House Tuesday morning were two Americans who clearly had started life as underdogs.

One is now our president, son of a Kenyan. The other is the daughter of Puerto Rican parents who is about to sit on the highest court in the land. Both were born without privilege. Both were raised in households with little cash, but much love. Both were raised by strong, devoted mothers who worked hard to support them....

Let me state that I am sure Sotomayor and I don't agree on very much. And I am sure some of her liberal rulings will drive me nuts. But President Obama won, is a liberal and gets to put liberals on the court. That's the way it works. Ideology aside, is she qualified?

There can be no debate over her qualifications. Her lifetime achievements in the academic world, in the legal world and the judicial world are unchallengeable. If that was the only measure, she would be confirmed unanimously....

There can be little doubt that Sotomayor is one of the least-qualified jurists to be nominated to the Supreme Court since FDR was stacking the bench with his stooges.

"The challenge has been laid down by conservative commentators that "if not now, when!" The terms " radical liberal" and "reverse racist" are being bantered about, with more to come.

Those who have not been able to lay a glove on President Obama, with his 60 percent-plus approval ratings, now think they can define him by smearing Sotomayor.

For a political party that lost an election just six months ago by 9½ million votes, the second largest vote margin of defeat ever for a Republican presidential candidate, you would think we would shut our mouths and figure out how to get more votes in the future."

What an ass. "Shut up conservatives! Just shut up!" Forget Obama won because the Republican party nominated a moderate RINO and conservatives stayed home. Forget that studies of the last election showed no real increase of democrat turnout but instead a decrease of Republican turnout.

When the RNC calls for money, tell them to just SHUT UP!

This appears to be true in Sotomayor's case, but from what I have read, this would be false in Ø's case.

I don’t particularly care about her biography, except to know if she is a person of good character. What I care about beyond that is if she will rule based on her political opinions or does she have a history of rulings that respect the text of the law.

If she is a judge who legislates from the bench, then we need to say so, and we shouldn’t be afraid to say so and oppose her on that basis. The Dems aren’t shy about going after judicial nominees they don’t like and we should not be shy about it either.

That should be the only subject on the table. Is she of good character, which presumably she is, and does she rule based on the text of the law or does she reinterpret the law as she sees fit.

No cash? That’s because Obama’s Mama practiced free love, with just about any man who paid her any attention for five minutes. And Obama’s Mama didn’t really raise the O, it was his grandparents.

For God's sake, what hard work and extra effort did this woman do, to be addressed this way?

Did other judges just slough off and skate through? Oh... yes, she's a woman and a Hispanic, we can't address her like a normal person. Hope folks can forgive me.

Yeah - anyone who challenges Sotomayor is a racist upper-class twit, right, Ed? A Republican, since we're all racist wealthy upper-class twits? It's been crystal-clear since this started that this would be the Democrat line, and I'm sick to death of "don't question us or we'll call you names." Go away, Ed, you're irrelevant.

despite what this “destroy america” group in hollywood has spouted for 50 years, intact families, even “white” families for crying out loud, have loving environments.

“Both were raised in households with little cash, but much love.”

It is getting to the point in our country that we have gone beyond just excusing the nuts in our midst, now we have to promote them all as leaders...the radical homosexuals, the far left kookoos, the “Constitution-means-nothing-because-well-because” groups...

What Soto is saying is jumping from the foundation that has demeaned the image of the white male, the white male father, for years.

Looking back, we see that the left destroying the family was all part of the plan.

From Wiki: Clarence Thomas was born in Pin Point, Georgia, a small, impoverished African American community.[2] His family are descendents of American Slaves in the American South. His father left his family when he was two years old.[3] After a house fire left them homeless, Thomas and his younger brother Myers were taken to Savannah, Georgia, where their mother worked as a domestic employee.

Yet the Dems had no problem savaging Thomas, despite his minority status and modest background.

More rank hypocrisy from the Dems.

Ed Rollins has it backward. The way to really piss off the base and Republicans is to roll over.

Then again, these idiots get a lot of things backwards. They think Rush Limbaugh is the horse and that the millions who listen to him are the cart. HELLO????? Rush found success because he articulates faithfully pretty much all of the principles we already believe. We don't reflect Rush's thoughts -- Rush reflects OURS.

NOT "going to war over Sotomayor" is a surefire way to alienate and tick off tens of millions of voters.

Who else is Obama looking to nominate? Souter’s heir will be chosen before 2009 closes. Who else is on the list? None are acceptable, some are likely less repulsive (legally), some more. We are not choosing between Janice Rogers Brown vs Sotomayor, or Clarence Thomas vs Sotomayor, or even Scalia Jr 2.0 vs Sotomayor.

The Dems looked at Bork and were correct in their assessment that if they cleared him off the table, the GOP would put someone less antagonistic to their causes forward (and so it was with Anthony Kennedy, who was on the short list from which Bork was first chosen).

Is there an anti-Kennedy anywhere in the lineup of potential nominees? Do the GOP + blue dogs have the numbers to hold off enough transparent leftists until the list is depleted enough for a sufficiently opaque leftist to be nominated?

Not on the short list. I can think of one Clinton nominated judge who would qualify as "he wouldn't be to bad' but if I name him, I'm afraid it would hurt his chances of being nominated.

It is absolutely chilling to read the comments following Rollins' argicles. Page after page of "Well said!" Mostly from self-described "independents" who add that they mostly vote Democrat, and also from Democrats who mean to compliment Rollins by saying that they often agree with him even though he's a Republican! (Hey, Ed ... what does THAT tell you???)

*sigh*

I have contempt for Ed Rollins. He is a tool of CNN, and he needs his butt kicked by conservatives. I'd like to see him ostracized by all Republicans and conservatives -- that's what he deserves, because he is doing America and the Republican party HARM by presenting himself as a "conservative" or "Republican" commentator for CNN. Judging by his take on Sotomayor, he is an apolitical, non-party-ID'd moderate.

She is most vulnerable on her anti gun stance.
Every other issue will be characterized as racism, sexism or sour grapes from the losing political party.

But even some democrat Senators and Representatives will not stand up to a serious groundswell against her appointment based on 2nd Ammendment issues.

Wherever you live, whatever party your Senators and Representatives belong to, contact them and express your concerns about having a nominee who does not support constitutional gun ownership.

But Ed Rollins, a CNN contributor and GOP strategist, says Cheney’s attacks are not helping the Republican image.

“While he certainly has a right to defend what they did over the last eight years, since he was the architect of much of it ... at the end of the day, we need to be looking forward, not backwards,” Rollins said Monday. “[Powell] is a man of great stature and a man obviously either party would like to have supporting them.”
