It has prompted angry exchanges, dozens of e-mails and led hundreds of parents to gather at school board meetings to voice their support or opposition.
Now district trustees are set to finally decide whether they will support lesson plans for students in kindergarten through fifth grade that are aimed at curbing anti-gay bullying.
The idea behind the proposed curriculum is to provide a safe environment for children to learn, as well as to offer a framework for teachers to break down stereotypes and teach kids about different types of families.
Supporters say the lessons will also help children of gay parents feel welcome at school and help end anti-gay teasing and bullying on the playground.
But opponents say the curriculum undercuts the parents' right to teach their children about relationships and sexual orientation, and pushes a political agenda without addressing ways to help other groups who may be singled out at school.
Trustees will vote on the curriculum Tuesday.
"I oppose it," 27-year-old Andrew Chong said Monday as he waited for a public hearing on the issue to begin at Kofman Auditorium. "The fact that these lessons have generated so much controversy and attention should make the school board take another look."

If a five year old knows what “gay” means then he/she has been sexualized at too early an age and is, therefore, a victim of bad parenting.

As much as I hate the idea of homeschooling—nothing against homeschoolers, but I could spot a homeschooled kid from a mile away in college b/c of their lack of mass socialization and tact—but I sure don’t want my sons being taught this kind of stuff. I have a PreK and a three-year-old in classes for a speech delay and they already come home saying things that are borderline for me. Little things about the environment and such, but enough to let me know it’s only going to get worse. And we’re in a conservative area.
I’m considering putting the little on in daycare at a younger age so that I can go to work to put them in private school. If we were in Cali, I’d be looking at any options outside of public schools.
We home school and our kids are very well socialized because we make and effort at it.
Well lack of tact is a new one. How can anybody be less tactful than many public school vets?
As many different personalities and types as there are on a typical campus I just can't believe you could spot homeschoolers unless it was by more maturity, better writing skills, and better test scores.
I suspect there are homeschoolers here who will help you understand that your stereotype is probably wring.
Today’s homeschoolers do participate in many social events and extra-curricular activities.
And I can see a homeschooler from a mile away too. They are the ones who excel academically and know more than their publicly (or even privately) schooled friends.
I used to think as you — but time on FR has taught me how great homeschooling is. If I had kids, they would DEFINITELY be homeschooled. You should strongly consider it.

Why would you warehouse your kids to be brought up by strangers? Stay at home Moms are the ones that prove they love their kids more than themselves.
Think I’ll hold onto and spruce up my humble home in Tx.
Probably gonna be a good investment in the coming years as decent people flee from those degenerate, socialist hellholes.

I’ve read the actual glbt curriculum from K to 4th grade. Clearly, it isn’t about teaching anti-bullying for 2 reasons:
1- The K, 1st, and 2nd lessons are in all textbooks, they are actually the themes of most lower grade reading curricula, like Welcome and Who’s In Our Class, etc...
2- Starting in 4th grade the “lessons” cannot be called anything other than indoctrination. Disgusting that parents would even have to be fighting something that shouldn’t have been taken seriously.
I don’y know. doersn’t a “No-bullying” policy already cover that. I mean, no means no right? Why a special homo policy?
That is my point it is entirely political. Most bullying has nothing to do with someone being gay. I went to public school and saw and sometimes intervened when kids were bullied. I had friends who were in LD classes that were really terrorized sometimes. What these homocentric anti-bullying things are is a way to push a homosexual agenda and make it even harder for smaller, smarter, or unpopular kids to have bullying addressed. It automatically lumps them with homosexuals which is the goal of these type of things.
