Huge Natural Gas Strike Found in Louisiana, Equivalent of 33 Billion Barrels of Oil
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 30, 2009 | Ben Casselman

Posted on 05/20/2009 8:17:41 AM PDT by Titus-Maximus

U.S. Gas Fields Go From Bust to Boom CADDO PARISH, La. -- A massive natural-gas discovery here in northern Louisiana heralds a big shift in the nation's energy landscape. After an era of declining production, the U.S. is now swimming in natural gas.

Even conservative estimates suggest the Louisiana discovery -- known as the Haynesville Shale, for the dense rock formation that contains the gas -- could hold some 200 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That's the equivalent of 33 billion barrels of oil, or 18 years' worth of current U.S. oil production. Some industry executives think the field could be several times that size.

"There's no dry hole here," says Joan Dunlap, vice president of Petrohawk Energy Corp., standing beside a drilling rig near a former Shreveport amusement park.

This is huge and it should put to rest all the naysayers saying there are no hydrocarbons left. There are oceans of gas and oil out there - let's take it and make America strong.

America needs energy independence!

FYI - There are 900 fewer drilling rigs operating in the US than there were at this time last year!

That's an awful lot of roughnecks, equipment manufacturers, service providers and small supply companies that are hurting right now.

Rotary Rigs Actually Making Hole

It's hard to sell equipment when there are 900 spares of everything sitting idle on the ground.

put the words “methane ice” in your browser.

The ocean floors also contain vast amounts of carbon based energy.

Japan is way ahead of us on that score.

The USA has more oil and gas then the middle east. There are no surprise finds, we know its there.

The problem is our government will not allow us to drill and get it and we must be punished for our previous success and our money must be distributed to the world.

The Democrats do not want us to be energy-independent; they want us to be government-dependent. I’d predict that some microscopic organism’s natural habitat will be found to outweigh human freedom and economic development.

Natural gas is a great fuel for auto’s, trucks and buses.
We already have a distribution pipeline system..and you can compress it locally to make CNG.
Please..no more windmills. Let’s spend that money on nucs.

We can convert our vehicles to natural gas. Keep jobs in America, no more paying OPEC, and natural gas is much cleaner and better for vehicles than oil.

This is very unwelcome news to the Obama administration. The Obama administration is not serious about energy independence. In fact it does not want energy independence it wants the issue. It wants to be able to claim its is seeking energy independence while it imposes controls on the economy. No one could possibly be serious about energy independence who prohibits drilling on domestic lands and in the near offshore. No one can be serious about energy independence who does not push nuclear energy.

To pretend to be able to provide for a continent the energy needed to supply 300 million people and the world's biggest economy with windmills is, well, quixotic.

Obviously the Obama administration has an entirely different agenda than energy independence.

Our domestic resident nutjobs, who seem to have taken over the country while the rest of us were "enjoying life" will come up with an endangered poison wasp (or worm or fish or whatever it takes to persuade a drunk, ignorant druggie judge somewhere) and the whole celebration will be turned into years of playing "whack-a-mole."

I'm not celebrating --- just yet.

Spotted Bog Turtle, Deer Tick, Fruit Fly, or the Pus-Spitting blister bat, they will find something.

Remember, an environmental impact study will take years before they let them tap any of this. And they always have the Wetlands Protection Act to fall back on.

They should have just tapped it and not told anyone.

When you read the comments section to your great post you would think that this find is closed or not yet producing, but the truth is in the article and other searches about Haynesville, which is almost 2 years old now. This find plus the Barnett Shale in the Fort Worth area is so huge that gas prices are dropping and the companies like Cheasapeak are holding off drilling while the wait for more markets. Great Post... too bad some folks don’t read the articles.

Quick, Quick; airdrop an endangered reptile into the area immediately.

You think that's funny?
In the 60s and 70s, when Barbara Bouncer was still a very small fish in an even smaller pond, there was the "salt marsh harvest mouse."

Magnificent marina developments were proposed which went bankrupt because of the either extinct or endangered rodent. No one had ever seen one. But they kept popping up, "found," every time a new marina development was proposed.

After a while, many of us were convinced that the wack-jobs were secretely raising the little critters and turning them loose where necessary to "stop" housing choices for people. Either that, or the little suckers were as extinct as cockroaches.

Just saying.
