We Don’t Need Obama To Tell Us What Cars We Want
FinkelBlog ^ | Mark Finkelstein

Maybe it’s my inner rebellious child, but it bugs me to be told what I want. And if there’s anyone I don’t want telling me that, it’s some do-gooder from the government.

So when Carol Browner made the morning show rounds today, claiming that Pres. Obama’s new, higher MPG standards are “giving Americans the cars they want,” it really got under my skin.

Oh, and then of course there’s the little thing about what she said being . . . demonstrably false.

You’ll be lucky if 0bama lets you have a car at all, much less leave your house without his express permission.

Notice that the CAFE standards don't go into effect until 2016. By that time both government car companies will be ruined and Zero will be at the end of his 2nd term.

What a Putz!

It’s not about what we want as far as socialist BO is concerned. It’s about what he wants and you must obey.

Coming soon to a garage near you. The 3 cylinder, polution-spewing, recycled plastic bodied East German Trabant.

Who says a government can't run a car company?

“We Don’t Need Obama To Tell Us What Cars We Want”
********
**************

You said a mouth full there, friend!

The american automobile—now chiefly SUV, PickUps, and others—is the very symbol of American Liberty and Freedom, just as the man on horseback was that symbol long prior to the automobile. This is not lost on those who seek to destroy America, and it is one of the reasons they have made the auto industry one of their major targets.

Like 0’pinhead sez, wise-up!

Ya know, one of my best friends, from childhood, is a engineer who works in the offshore racing biz. Before that, he worked in the auto racing biz. I remember quite well when a bunch of us had this discussion over how average MPG has not gone up and it's all an evil conspiracy between big oil and big auto. His response was that cars have gotten much more efficient over the years but the real problem is that the wrong measurement is being used to push the argument, thus hiding the real culprit. That culprit is weight and the measurement he says is the real one to look at is Weight/Miles/Gallon. He pointed out that the average car has around 50-100LBS of anti-pollution on it which, in addition to that payload, also has a negative impact on the efficiency since almost all emission controls require some degree of energy consumption themselves.

Another item which has added large amounts of weight to newer cars is all of the sound deadening, passive restraints(air bags), and extra wire used for all of the nice power goodies(windows, locks, 12V outlets, video systems) that consumers demand today.

One of the things they did in the 70's which ended up as bad for occupants was that, in order to get higher MPG's they cut weight by lightening the superstructure with punchouts and other forms of metal removal. That in turn produced more accident related injuries and deaths. As he put it, there are metals availible today which are stronger than steel and much lighter, but they also cost a great deal more and require more expensive processing to make parts with.

“giving Americans the cars they want,”

That's true, for Sierra Club members that live in Manhattan and bike to work.

For everybody else, that statement is a farce.

Remember, there is no member of the Obamaloon cabinet or the Obamaloon house or the Obamaloon senate who could pass mechanics 101, electrical engineering 101, chemistry 101, or math 101. That’s why they’re politicians.

And - they’re gonna design your cars.

Changes coming (POF Predictions)...

  1. Before long, trucks and SUVs will only be available to state registered contractors. No trucks or SUVs for the hoi polloi.55 mph national speed limits come back. Lower speeds will offset the increased deaths from driving their stupid micro cars.
  2. Obama Motors will use ultra-high mpg tires on us that ride like truck tires pumped up to 90 psi. Passenger comfort be damned.
  3. Air conditioners will be reduced in size and output of cold air. You won't be able to keep your cab at 72 degrees F ("and not have other countries complain about it").
  4. Odd / Even driving days. Like Odd / Even refueling days of yore, you'll get a sticker that indicates which day you can drive your vehicle

Just thought you'd like a sneak peek at your new world under Obamunism.

In the end, the net result is that cars and trucks will simply be more expensive relative to income.

The administration has essentially mandated that drivers need to pay more for the privilege - instead of "drill here, drill now", we get "we'll just make it more expensive to drive and maybe they'll do less of it," while acting as if they're doing us a favor by limiting choice and increasing cost.

That is absolutely correct. Let’s also remember that while cars might not get 100 miles per gallon, the horsepower has gone up dramatically, at least in 4 and 6 cylinder engines, while the MPG went up as well.

Very true.

And Diane Sawyer was practically begging for a gas tax this morning while interview the Obamabot Bimbo.

The argument that these expensive cars will balance out through the savings in gas is completely bogus. It could takes years and years to get the savings they are talking about. And I will bet dollars to donuts these GM and Chrysler POS’s won’t last that long.

The sad thing is that CAFE will exacerbate the very problem it is designed to solve. We have a history to observe, and it tells us that over time, once in possession of these higher MPG implements, more miles will be driven.

The first round of CAFE begun in the mid-seventies caused urban sprawl to accelerate, since the economy car enabled one to commute from further out. CAFE in the end makes gasoline cheaper to use, as the cost per mile goes down, don't think that people won't figure out a way to drive more miles, and thus use more of it.

P.S.-Not to mention that with increased MPG, the automobile becomes a more competitive alternative to mass transit, further INCREASING the use of fossil fuels.

According to Hannity, when Obama was still back in Illinois, he was driving a Chrysler 300M with a HEMI engine. Just more of the typical hypocritical liberal, "Do as I say, not as I do".

"metals availible today which are stronger than steel and much lighter"

Reardon Metal, finally?

Alloy steel is still the strongest. Cars are typically using HSLA (high strength low alloy) steels with a yield of around 80,000 pounds per square inch. Garden variety steel is around 36,000.

Titanium is great stuff, a yield of around 140,000 in the popular 6Al-4V alloy. It's also extremely corrosion resistant, and lighter than steel at 0.17 pounds per cubic inch versus steel's 0.29.

But it's a LOT more expensive.

Cars are using aluminum, titanium and composite components pretty regularly now. And the price goes up accordingly.

That surprises me. I figured he had probably ridden in the backseat with some of the hired help driving him around going back to his community agitator days.

A few months ago right after “he” became prez I heard 2 different O. supporters say that after GM got the bailout that O would be able to tell them what kind of cars to make.

I was driving an 05 Cheve Tahoe with 55,000 miles on it and would not have thought about a new one for several more years but I went out and bought a new one because I fear that GM might not be allowed to make them anymore.

Yep, efficiency increases have never resulted in less power demand.

Price is the only thing that has decreased demand.

I believe 0 knows these simple facts and will increase price no matter what CAFE is.

Their effect is, essentially, to reduce the power of America.

Your buddy Scott has the gas tax push by Dianne Sawyer on GMA.

ABC's Diane Sawyer Pleads for European-style Gas Tax

Citing calls for a gas tax by New York Times columnist Tom Friedman, she pressed, "If you really want to change the fuel patterns of this country, and if you want to reduce dependence on foreign oil, not by 2015 or 2016, but right now, there is one way to do it. It's the way Europe has been doing it. And that is a gasoline tax."

Their effect is, essentially, to reduce the power of America.

The Marxists don't care about the power of America one way or the other, they care about their personal power to manage your life.

Affordable personal transportation is one of the major obstacles to their control. They want central planners (which is to say, themselves) to decide where you will live, who you will live next to, where you'll work, where your kids will go to school.

They already tried this 40 years ago. And the predictable result was the middle class used their four wheel mobility to "white flight" the hell away from it.

The Marxists know this. So they're going to make sure you are dependent on public transportation, toll roads, rationed gas, etc. before trying it again. This is just a step down that road.

Liberals live in an alternative universe in which the conservation of a commodity can be increased by making it cheaper to use.
