SACRAMENTO -- In a last-minute twist, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will miss his own special election in his state on Tuesday.
Schwarzenegger flew to Washington Monday night to appear Tuesday morning with President Barack Obama and other leaders to announce a change in the nation's automobile emission rules.
"Gov. Schwarzenegger has been leading the fight for California and 13 other state to regulate vehicle emissions," said gubernatorial spokesman Aaron McLear.
"(The) historic announcement will include a three-party agreement between California, the Obama administration and the automakers that not only allows California to regulate our emissions but also establishes a national standard."
Back at home, Schwarzenegger has also been leading the fight to pass six ballot measures that would help balance California's budget. Polls have shown that five of the six are in deep trouble with voters, particularly Proposition 1C, which would allow the state to borrow $5 billion from future California Lottery revenues.
McLear said that rather than vote at his traditional polling place near his Brentwood home, the governor planned to obtain an "emergency absentee ballot" and vote Monday.
An obscure section of California election law allows a voter to request an emergency ballot if "unable to go to his or her polling place because of conditions resulting in his or her absence from the precinct."
The new auto standards expected to be announced would put stricter federal rules on greenhouse gas emissions and fuel economy, including an average of 35 miles per gallon by 2016.
Schwarzenegger faced resistance for several years from the Bush administration when he sought a federal waiver for California to adopt stricter standards than those at the federal level.
LOL, good! That will be one fewer vote for all these losing propositions.
OK.....everybody pony up ten bucks and let’s get this FReepathon over....
Thanks.
Goodnight, all.....
When these propositions go down in flames, he'll claim justification in approving whatever the legislature wants. "The people just don't understand how serious this is."
Here we go.
Not even liberals are voting yes on these lol.
Insanity. California founders because of high taxes and over regulation, so Arnold goes to preside over yet another government intrusion into another segment of the economy which is foundering due to over regulation.
Yeah he doesn’t want to be anywhere nearby when this debacle goes down in flames....
“Schwarzenegger faced resistance for several years from the Bush administration when he sought a federal waiver for California to adopt stricter standards than those at the federal level.”
But now the way is clear for California to inflict on our entire nation the disaster which California has become.
Is it not obvious the Bush Administration wisely refused to place this last straw on the camel’s back?
A flabby girlie man coward.
Who’s gonna post the girly-man picture?
Obama the Godfather called for a meeting of the rest of the mafia, GM, Fiat, Schwartzentraitor, etc.
So they're, essentially, agreeing with themselves.
I don’t think he was counting on the sleeping giant actually waking up.
Did you see the Rasmussen poll?

The number of idiots who usually say “raise taxes” seem to be dwindling.
And then there are those Tea Parties.
Signs of encouragement.
You mean the same idiots who voted for high speed rail? The same idiots who believed the crap about embryonic stem cells? The same idiots who voted for the O-bot?
They want just "something" for "nothing." SOS.
Arnie’s emissions were fine at the 2004 RNC Convention but have been much more toxic since then....
Unfortunately, they haven't yet learned that bonds aren't free.
It's all a lie.
This idiot had a meeting 3 days ago with his handlers and personal insiders, who told him whats up in regards to the the polls for this up coming, major state election.
Schwarzenegger was basically told it would be better to leave the state for a week, than to face an army of reporters asking really difficult questions.
Why sit around and watch your proposals go down the crapper
Kinda like how Arnie got re-elected in 2006 by groveling to voters and admitting he was wrong to "barrel ahead" and push for a costly special election when there wasn't popular support from the electorate to do so. So now during his second term, Arnie decides to preside over yet yet another costly special election when there isn't popular support from the electorate to do so.
I guess he's a slow learner.
Yeah, why would a governor hang around for a major state election, when he could be at a smog ceremony in D.C.
Arnold is hopefully fleeing a sinking ship.
