A bill declaring a Harvey Milk Day in California - to honor the slain gay rights figure - passed the state Senate today 24-14 and now goes to the Assembly.
No surprise that all 23 Democrats present voted yes. But Sen. Abel Maldonado, R-Santa Maria, changed his vote from a "no" on the same bill last year to the sole GOP "yes" on the floor Thursday.

“How long until Maldonado pulls a Spector?”
He might as well - he votes like a dem.

same crap going on in CT. when does the madness end?
Why don’t they have “Jim Jones Day” while they’re at it?
Thanks for the link!
I just sent that to my e-mail list.
What did Harvey Milk to for San Francisco/California/America that he did for EVERYBODY?
His only contributions were towards homosexuals and people who like disfiguring their bodies to cure a mental illness.
Let’s not forget he also was the lone Republican who allowed that monstrosity of a budget and its tax increases, er FEE increases to go through.
Considering even LIBS are starting to get angry at the current fiscal situation in California, I think this current Assembly/Senate is in for a shock next year come re-election time.
same crap going on in CT. when does the madness end?
when all these libtards are run out of town and we get people in who want to run government like a business using our money to benefit us!
Madonado wasn’t the lone Republican, or it would not have passed. He was the last one needed, so he’s the one that publicly sold his vote.
Oh - I must have misheard it on the news, then, because I thought that he was the only one. See? We learn something new every day!
Well he was a Commie, so that is a huge point in his favor.
Why dont they have Jim Jones Day while theyre at it?
In the works.....
See, when I called Able Arnold’s butt-buddy, I wasn’t kidding around. I could see the affection in his eyes. ;-)
What a crock. Here is some background from FlashReport:
Maldonado Assails Pro-Family Leader in Committee Hearing by Meredith Turney | 5-6-2009Maldonado will say whatever whatever it takes to cover his rear, and the MSM will aid and abet him in deceiving the public. Aint' life grand. This morning the Senate Education Committee passed Mark Lenos SB 572, legislation that will require the governor to declare every May 22 Harvey Milk Day. The bill specifies that school children should participate in activities commemorating the life of Harvey Milk during their school day. Those familiar with California politics will remember Harvey Milk as the San Francisco County Supervisor who was gunned down by a fellow supervisor following a political dispute. Earlier this year a biopic on Milk won several Academy Awards, thus bringing more attention to Lenos controversial bill.
The fact that SB 572 is sailing through the legislature isnt shocking. In fact, the bill passed the legislature last year and was justly vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger who explained that Milk should be honored in the community where he had the most impact: San Francisco. The problem is the behavior of Republican turncoat Abel Maldonado during the hearing this morning.
My boss, Karen England, was testifying against the bill when Maldonado decided to go after her. Maldonado began asking questions about whether the bill would require teachers to instruct students about Milk, and how that would harm students. Karen proceeded to explain to the Senator that nothing currently prevents schools from talking about Milk, but that the matter should be decided at the local levelnot at the governors office. But Maldonado would not let the matter go and repeatedly asked the same questions in an attempt to make Karen and other opponents of the bill look like bigots. Instead, he ended up looking like a jerk. Testifying on a controversial bill is never easy in the capitol, but its even harder when a Republican senator-someone usually dependable on pro-family matters-assails pro-family advocates.
(snip)
LOL! Feel the looooove!
P.S. I like the addition to your tagline. :-)
And what activities are these?
What are we commemorating in the life of Harvey Milk? They are celebrating that he was a homosexual activist, and that he was a "martyr" gunned down by a "homophobe"
It's all propaganda designed to get children to accept homosexuality as groovy and opposition as intolerant (which they're doing already, they'll have a special day set aside to nail home that point).
Un-abled Maldonado is as intellectually and morally bankrupt as usual.
EXISTING LAWHere is a link to the actual bill: SB 572: Harvey Milk Day: official designation.
Existing law requires the Governor to proclaim certain days each year, often in remembrance of important figures in the civil rights movement. These days include Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Native American Day, and Juneteenth National Freedom Day, among others. Some of these days, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Cesar Chavez Day, are also state holidays during which public functions are suspended and state employees receive a day off.Existing law also prescribes public school holidays and commemorative activities on such days. For example, students receive a day off for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and education about the role of Dr. King in the United States civil rights movement. March 31, Cesar Chavez Day, and the forth Friday in September, Native American Day, are optional holidays for schools and may include commemorative exercises and lessons related to these holidays.
Other days simply act as days of special significance, which schools are encouraged to observe with suitable commemorative exercises.
WHAT THIS BILL WOULD DO
SB 572 would require the Governor to proclaim May 22 of each year as Harvey Milk Day. It would also designate Harvey Milk Day as a day of special significance in public schools and educational institutions, and encourage those entities to conduct suitable commemorative exercises. This bill would put California on record as recognizing the social contributions that Harvey Milk made to our nation as a civil rights leader. It would also allow schools to conduct activities that would foster respect for all, and educate students about an important figure who is often omitted from history lessons.
In reading the bill, I am even more opposed to it. It rewrites history and places that version into law. In an effort to prop up Milk, they totally mischaracterize others, such as the 1978 Briggs Initiative (Proposition 6) which the bill completely misrepresents as a proposed "banning of gays and lesbians from teaching in the public schools". Prop 6 allowed the firing of teachers who advocated a homosexual lifestyle in the classroom. It did not ban them from teaching for their sexual preference.
Not sure I want to know. I feel so sorry for the children.
Milk was 58 when he was killed. He had resided in California for only six short years. He had served for one year on the board of supervisors when he was shot. And suddenly, he has an offical day designated in California commemorating his life -- for no other reason than he was gay. His murder wasn't even motivated by his gayness! Even his claim to "martyrdom" is specious!
GO Abel! (see tagline)
What Prop 6 would have done is PERMIT the firing of ANY teacher (homosexual or HETEROSEXUAL) who “advocates, solicits, imposes, encourages or promotes public or private homosexual activity.”
Here is some more stuff on Briggs I dug up, with sources:

FO was trying to sell the same misinformation, no surprise there!
My research wan in response to that log cabin propaganda.

Maldonado is not a Republican or a Democrat. Maldonado is a cultural separatist, an ideologue to benefit his raza.
Maladonado could well switch back and forth repeatedly as long as the partisan block plus the cultural block equals victory. Right now he's better off as a Republican since can he reach across and pull in Democrats of Mexican ancestry and allegiance.
