Russia's newest frigate starts final sea trials in Baltic Sea

KALININGRAD, May 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's newest frigate, the Yaroslav Mudry, has started state-commissioned sea trials in the Baltic Sea, a spokesman for the Yantar shipyard said on Wednesday.

The frigate is the second vessel in the 11540 Yastreb series after the Neustrashimy, which recently took part in an anti-piracy operation in the Gulf of Aden.

"After the trials, the ship will undergo a final inventory check, and will be handed over to the Russian Defense Ministry in mid-June," the official said.

Earlier reports said the frigate was due to enter service in April. The construction of the Yaroslav Mudry has taken almost 19 years, due to financing shortages.

The frigate has a displacement of 4,250 metric tons and a maximum speed of 30 knots. It is armed with anti-ship missiles, air defense systems, a 100-mm artillery mount, depth charges, and a Ka-27 helicopter.

The frigate suffered minor damage on May 4 during preliminary sea trials when a Ka-27 helicopter crash-landed on the deck and fell into the sea.

"The crash of the Baltic Fleet's Ka-27 helicopter, whose rotor blades damaged the ship's bulkhead, had practically no effect on the schedule of the state-commissioned trials and the deadline for the ship's handover [to the Defense Ministry]," the spokesman said.

Helicopters work better when they’re flown properly, don’t they?

No wonder if you consider total collapse of everything in Russia after 1991.

Yeah, good looking ship, huh?

I guess they did it by hand. It’s a devil of a time using hand saws to cut steel and aluminum. Man, that’s hard work.

Then using chisels to shape the barrel of that bow gun. Wow. That ain’t no trip to Paris!

“Russia’s newest frigate, the Yaroslav Mudry, has started state-commissioned sea trials in the Baltic Sea, a spokesman for the Yantar shipyard said on Wednesday....”

... and is scheduled for engine replacement in 2011.

Good of the Russians to supply so many targets.

From the sounds of the article, it’s about the same as our old Destroyers. I’m mean the Fletcher Class, except for the missles. A Fletcher could go about 30 knots.

Sounds like it sat unfinished for quite a while.

This one looks pretty good. The Russian Navy, for all of the faults of their government, does tend to design some really good-looking ships. The Kirov class, for example. Nice lines.

Though, nothing, but nothing looks as good on the water as an Iowa class. Bar none.

“It took 19 years to build this?”

19 years of money shortages, and then a complete redesign and update of it’s systems...

My Russian Naval friend is excited about these new frigates.

It’s designed to be a true Blue Water ship, capable of independent operations. It’s not a fire and forget weapon like past Russian/Soviet ships have been.

It appears that the built a war ship that actually had guns on it. Amazing!

I've been impressed with their ice breakers. While we were limping along with the old Mackinaw, the Rooskies were turning out big, powerful nuclear-powered, arctic capable ships.

When I read stuff like this it makes me think the Russians are building up for something. If it comes, I guess they will be prepared.

Hillary’s State Department reset button translations:

Yaroslav Mudry - “Stuck in the mud”.

Neustrashimy - “Not so shiny”

Aegis destroyers have a draft of about 30 feet or so. Since this is a frigate, I would guess he draft is around 25 feet.

Aegis destroyers make a Great Lakes tour every summer. Draft is 28 feet on the GL...
I ran a bunkering biz in Duluth/Superior and we put fuel on a couple of them. It was an enormous hassle dealing with Defense Fuel Supply Administration. Talk about bureaucracy !
