GOP to rebrand Dems as 'socialists' By: Roger Simon May 13, 2009 04:32 AM EST
A member of the Republican National Committee told me Tuesday that when the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the Democrat Socialist Party.
When I asked if such a resolution would force RNC Chairman Michael Steele to use that label when talking about Democrats in all his speeches and press releases, the RNC member replied: Who cares?
Which pretty much sums up the attitude some members of the RNC have toward their chairman these days.
Steele wrote a memo last month opposing the resolution. Steele said that while he believes Democrats are indeed marching America toward European-style socialism, he also said in a (rare) flash of insight that officially referring to them as the Democrat Socialist Party will accomplish little than to give the media and our opponents the opportunity to mischaracterize Republicans.
Two other resolutions to urge Republican lawmakers to reject earmarks and to commend them for opposing bailouts and reckless spending bills are also on the agenda, but language that would have denounced Sen. Arlen Specter, a Republican turned Democrat, and Republican Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins for voting for President Obamas stimulus package has been dropped.

A little LATE....we’re heading for worse....
IS THIS TRUE????????!!!!!
So we have the Democrats Socialists (DEMS) Democrats (RINO’s) and Conservatives (no actual Party)?
They're actually fascists, in the true, corporate-nationalization sense of the word.
I’ve been saying that for years now.
They fit the history of the nazi party of pre WW2.
One can only hope this is true, however, I’d much prefer to use the term merely as the “Socialist Party.”
How fitting, DSP, the dipshits party.
Even taking the Nazis out of it, re Godwin’s law, just look at, for example, Peron’s Argentina.. fascism based on the economics of the National Socialists that the left praises often.
Michael Steele - Latest in a long line of Republican disappointments.
If it is I might consider starting to donate once again.
Sounds similar to the Republican Socialist Party we have on the right.
Sure don't want that happening, do we!
I have supported him in some situations because I understood his point and had no issue with the overall message he was trying to present, but this one leaves me scratching my head.
How is this a bad thing to call a spade a spade?
the leader of that Party is back home, I believe in Texas.
From the atricle:
After all, the GOP would take the opportunity regardless.
But the statist GOP still moves on.
Glenn Beck makes a credible argument that both parties are run by 'Progressives'.
And when did they figure this out????
I agree, it’s a little late....at least 40 years late!
That is a silly idea.
It won’t work.
The Whack Left Loon Party is much better!
"...he [Steele] also said in a (rare) flash of insight that officially referring to them as the Democrat Socialist Party 'will accomplish little than to give the media and our opponents the opportunity to mischaracterize Republicans.'"
Ahhhh, what're they doing *anyway*?
Moreover, "the media and our opponents" are one in the same!
Oy vey.
And to think, Steele's the gifted one! LOL!!
My God, man! What are they doing to Pubbies now; playing hopscotch?
In this single statement you have summed up what is wrong with the RNC. Stop trying to "look nice" to the opponents.
Concern over image only leads to appeasement.
The true Patriots are on the rise, the tide will turn sooner than much imagine.
The problem is he’s too big of a wimp to even try.
Earth to Mike Steele : the media is going to mischaracterize Republicans ANYWAY.
Steele has utterly failed to deliever ANY kind of message about what the party stands for. I really wonder if it stands for anything myself.
Hell...the so called ‘leaders’ like McCain and Romney are going on a ‘listening’ tour because they are so devoid of their own beliefs and convictions, they need people to tell them what they should represent, so they can go out there and merely pander for their votes...rather than actually believing in any principles whatsoever.
Until we get a Republican that actually STANDS UP and affirms his BELIEF in conservative ideals, and articulates WHY he feels that way....conservatives will be lost in the wilderness.
Michael Steele ain’t it.
But, but, but...
The “National Socialist Party” was a right-wing party, at least that’s what I’ve been told all my life.
See post # 29.
Yep, because calling them liberal isn't right, when the republicans took the "middle ground" which IS liberalsism, letting the dems win by sliding further left.
Yo MNlurker—wake up and smell the coffee. There is no national party in which conservatives are welcome—except as cover to impart the impression that the GOP is a credible opposition party to the Demrat Party.
To any objective observer, the RINO-led GOP is nothing more than a demrat tool—and it has been for years.
A couple of years too late...
....It wont work...
Why not. it is absolutely on target. The American euroists are Social Democrats with the same lack of values as their one on one counterparts in Europe.
The picture must be drawn and the question asked....are you American or European? Do you love America or France, or Belgium or Britain?
I don't think it mischaracterizes the 'Rats, but other than telling the truth, it will probably have little practical effect on the average voter, who is probably too stupid to know what a 'socialist' is and what socialism stands for. And even if they did, I'm guessing that a significant number, perhaps even a majority, would not have a problem with it. This is what has changed from the '80s, and we need to understand it to understand the problem we face. There is a new generation coming to power, one that has been indoctrinated all their lives in schools dominated by ultra-liberals at the primary and secondary levels, and out-and-out Marxists at the university level. Many of them don't have a problem with confiscatory tax policies, class warfare rhetoric, and government-run everything.
Notice how the article, and the author, takes a mere one paragraph before he turns the story around to “problems” with the GOP
Good. Time to start demanding truth in advertising.
Lessee... the democrat party is busy
* criminalizing political differences
* clamping down on free speech legislatively or by bullying and character assassination
* seeking to restrict firearms ownership
* smearing as 'terrorists' those who have a literalist view of the Constitution
* building inequalities under the law via 'hate crimes' laws
* undermining free and open elections by promoting electoral corruption, and on and on.
Personally, I'm thinking waaay beyond "socialist" these days.
Only in relation to the very left leaning Communists.
The real ‘right wing’ at the time where the SDP, and they where somewhat economically liberal (very Keynesian) by our standards, but they did represent a somewhat democratic republic form of government.
Sure it is late, but if done correctly the GOP can take back the House by 2012.
That may be even more important than winning the Presidency at this point in time.
The key is to put pressure on the Blue Dogs in congress and this is the way to do it.
Flipping it in 2010 is too much to hope for IMO, but you can take a big bite and put it over the top in 2012.
I think working toward building a wave in the house is more important than arguing over Palin, Romney, Huckabee etc. Whatever wave is or is not built will carry the nominee in 2012.
All things being equal, I’d almost rather have Congress than the Presidency right now if force to choose.
While the nomenclature is a truism, this is an absolutely useless gesture. Steele & Co.’s time would be better spent expounding and rebuilding conservative principles. Instead, they’re paddling around in circles while the boat fills up with water.
If you want to get philosophically technical, neither do any of the smaller third parties; a 'political party' philosophically is the antithesis of Conservatism as we look to the individual for solutions instead of the government. Parties represent groupings of issues and association with a party represents siding with a grouping of issues that best represents your values.
Not to worry, the GooP can always rebuild after 2010 and the slaughter ahead..
circular firing squad?
sigh
Instead, Steele needs to give concrete examples of what "being socialist" means to the average American. More taxes, less individual freedoms, less choices.
And while he's at it, Republicans can't just say, "we're for more freedom." Sadly, that's too abstract a concept for many Americans. We need to spell it out: freedom to live and raise a family as you see fit, including private and home-schooling; freedom to earn and keep more of their hard-earned wages; freedom to worship in a church of their choosing, and contribute to charities the individual finds meaningful, not those endorsed by government; freedom to bear arms, and protect one's self and family; and freedom -- through a sound energy policy, to travel and exercise other freedoms; and finally, the freedom to live without a reasonable fear that our country's national security isn't being overlooked, for fear of "alienating" our enemies.
Which is very difficult when the party that I’d like to identify (R) has gone further to the left of Democrat President JFK...hence if people ask me what Party I am a part of I simply say I’m a conservative.
You beat me to it.
The shoe sure fits, doesn’t it?
The DSP (Democratic Socialist Party) has been doing this to us for years. Past due time to hit back...
