Every tyranny begins with a few simple steps. Hitler directed the Nazi electoral platform against "Jewish speculators" in 1928. Today, Obama derides investors in Chrysler as "a small group of speculators," bluntly stating, "I don’t stand with them."

Second, the budding tyrant identifies personal insults as insults to the country. In 1924, upon Lenin’s death, Joseph Stalin famously demanded personal loyalty to Lenin’s memory from the unfortunates living under Soviet rule: "We swear to you, comrade Lenin, that we will not spare our lives in order to strengthen the union of the working people of the entire world -- the communist international!" In 1934, Hitler forced German soldiers and civil servants to take oaths proclaiming allegiance to him personally.

Since the inevitable comparison will take place between dissent during the Bush Administration and dissent during the Obama Administration, let me clear the air.

The majority of dissent during the Bush Administration was over the war in Iraq. That dissent caused our troops to be attcked more violently and that dissent was used as a recruiting tool by our enemies.

The majority of dissent during the Obama Administration is over economic and social policies. That dissent does not place our citizens in harms way.

In fact, one major area of dissent during the Obama Administration is the release of the so-called “torture” memos and the desire to release more photographs of alleged prisoner abuse. The dissent is TO PREVENT harm from befalling our troops and citizens and TO PREVENT further recruiting materials from falling into enemy hands.

The release of photos from Abu Ghraib was a clear mistake that should not be repeated again by this administration. It is clear that the photos harmed our efforts and prolonged the conflict in Iraq.

The alternative could be a written narative of the alleged abuse with disciplinary action taken. We do not need to see underwear on people’s heads....a simple, written description could have sufficed.
