A little more than two weeks after he switched parties, newly-minted Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter is finding that life is not the comfort zone he perhaps thought it might be in his newfound political home. For all the statements of official White House support for Specter as he seeks re-election next year -- and the efforts of Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell to strong-arm opponents out of the Democratic primary -- signs are strong that the 79-year-old Specter will still have to face the two Democratic candidates who were seeking the Senate nomination when he was still a Republican.
Moreover, although Rep. Joe Sestak is not there yet, all signals from the two-term liberal congressman and retired U.S. Navy admiral are that he will take on Specter in the Democratic primary next May.
Meanwhile, to the surprise of quite a few, conservative former Rep. Pat Toomey appears to have smooth sailing on the Republican side. Five years after he drew 49.2% of the vote against Specter, Toomey is now getting endorsements from elected officials and party leaders by the day. Last week, he dodged a potentially deadly bullet when former two-term Gov. and Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge announced he would not run for the Senate. Polls had shown moderate GOPer Ridge handily winning his partys nod and running neck-and-neck with Specter among all voters.

Arlen is about to get to see the underside of the Messiah’s bus.

Can’t trust Arlen or most Democrats.
Can’t trust Arlen or most Democrats.
Can’t trust Arlen or most Democrats.
Who can ya trust? GOPers?
1, 2, 3, .... AWWWWWWWW
I’m sure that Obama noted that Bush was stabbed in the back after campaigning for Arlen.
My predicition is that some excuse not to campaign for Areln will be Obama’s response.
Bet Barry has to sort his sock drawer everytime Arlen needs him.
I like it...I like it!
Mr. President, Congressman Stestak is on line two. Joe, hey how's muh man . . . .
Spector still has the name recognition. So far.
AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!
Say goodnight Arlen.
There really is no fool like an old Democrat fool!
And not just a Republican Senator...but a conservative Republican Senator!
Now, if only McQueeg was as stupid and short-sighted as Sphincter...
I’d much rather see Specter lose as a Democrat than win as a Republican. This ought to be a slam dunk if whatever conservative wins the primary will stick to their principles and not go moderate on us.
If Specter gets the Dem nomination, he’s vulnerable on 100 different fronts. If some other Democrat beats Specter and gets the nomination, he’s likely a second-tier Ned Lampson sort of guy that a principled opponent should easily beat.*

I’m glad Ridge is not running. One less RINO. Toomey will make a great Senator.
I can’t picture PA electing Toomey. Just my opinion.
That’s too funny.Have to show my husband.Bump.
People are angry over the spending and losing their jobs. Toomey will provide a sharp contrast to whoever POS Dem runs against him. No more of this "moderate" crapola from Specter. Toomey has a great chance but IMO the RNC will pull the rug out from under him or groom another RINO to run against him.
You don’t think Simmons has a chance to become senator?
I think the POS will be in the form of a lovely retired sailor...
Exactly my first thought.
I'm from MA...I have no special knowledge of PA politics. From the article it certainly appears as if Sphincter will,at the very least, have his hands full in the RAT primary and with at least one big life-long RAT name challenging him he could very well lose. However,I'll admit that my post was as much wishful thinking as anything else.Someone knowledgeable in PA politics would be a much better analyst than me.
If he loses the Rat primary, he loses. PA has a “Sore Loser” law that says he can’t run as an Indy if he loses the primary.
McQueeg is safe in his seat as long as he wants it. :^(
Arlene was a RINO who’s now a democrat, but to them, he’s a DINO who was a Republican. He outsmarted himself,
I was referencing CT, where as I understand it, Simmons has a good chance against Dodd.
