Elizabeth Edwards interview with Oprah: 'No idea' if John Edwards fathered Rielle Hunter's baby
New York Daily News ^ | Tuesday, May 5th 2009 | Michael Saul

Posted on 05/05/2009 12:51:43 PM PDT by presidio9

Despite John Edwards' denials that he fathered a baby with his onetime mistress, his betrayed wife Elizabeth said she has "no idea" whether the former presidential candidate is a new dad.

In an exclusive interview set to air Thursday, Oprah Winfrey asks Elizabeth Edwards about rampant speculation that he is the father of campaign videographer Rielle Hunter's one-year-old daughter.

"I've seen a picture of the baby. I have no idea. It doesn't look like my children but I don't have any idea," Edwards told Winfrey.

Edwards talked about the state of her marriage, her husband's infidelity and her ongoing battle with terminal cancer. Last week, the Daily News published an exclusive report about Elizabeth Edwards' new memoir "Resilience" in which recounts how she publicly stood by her cheating husband's side in his failed presidential campaign.

Winfrey asked Edwards directly whether she's still in love with her husband.

"You know, that's a complicated question," she said.

The couple is still living together in their 28,000-square-foot home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Asked if their relationship is day to day, Edwards replied, "Neither one of us is out the door so I guess it's day by day, but maybe it's month by month."

In a portion of the interview that will be chronicled in the June issue of O magazine, Edwards offered an explanation for why her husband might have been attracted to Hunter.

"This person is very different from me, and really very different from him," she said. "We're basically old-fashioned people. So, this was a pretty big leap for him. Maybe it's being so different is what was attractive."

As she revealed in her memoir, Elizabeth Edwards told Winfrey she specifically requested fidelity from her husband when they married.

"I wanted him to be faithful to me - it was enormously important to me," she said.

Edwards told Winfrey how Hunter used a tawdry pick-up line to lure her husband.

"What John said is that this woman spotted him in the hotel in which he was staying. He was meeting someone in the restaurant bar area and she verified with someone who he worked with that it was John," she said.

"John went to dinner at a nearby restaurant and when he walked back to the hotel she was standing in front of the hotel. She said to him, 'You are so hot.'"

Edwards, who has dealt with tragedy before when the couple's 16-year-old son, Wade, died in an auto accident, said she is not scared of dying.

"It's not as frightening," she said. "If there's an ever after - please, please, please - I would be leaving part of my family, but I can do and join another party, and wait for that day when we're all together again. In some ways it's something you yearn for."

John Edwards did not publicly admit the affair with Hunter until last August - seven months after he quit the presidential race, and the National Enquirer had reported he was the father of Hunter's daughter.

At the time, Edwards adamantly denied paternity. Elizabeth Edwards did not mention the baby in her new book.

Ms. Edwards is stupid and dying. Not a good combination. Her husband's hubris and her complicity are the two reasons we now have BHO in the White House.

let’s make this very clear that Elizabeth Edwards is as slick and scummy as her husband. Yeah, it sucks she has cancer but don’t let your sympathy for her get in the way that she’s as much a liar as her husband. I am convinced she knew her husband was cheating and it’s plausible she even allowed him knowing she was terminal. She needs to sell her book and I hope it flops like his political career did.

I hope Elizabeth Edwards lives to be 80, but she looks pretty good to me right now. Yes she has cancer, and yes its going to kill her. But the fact that she's doing a book tour a year and a half later makes their appearance on 60 Minutes look even more contrived and sleazy now than it did then. Just like Silky dropping his the memory of his son's car accident whenever he thought it might help him in the polls. They both make me sick.

“”John went to dinner at a nearby restaurant and when he walked back to the hotel she was standing in front of the hotel. She said to him, ‘You are so hot.’”

What a class act. Apparently John honored his wife’s expressed desire that he be faithful for as long as humanly possible. But tragically, he was snared by a sneaky witch who broke down his willpower with an irresistible come-on line. It’s really not his fault: telling a born narcissist line John Edwards that he’s hot is the equivalent of offering blow to a crack addict. As with Bill Clinton, I believe we all are supposed to feel sorry for the wronged wife and just move on...

I really can't imagine letting my dh off the hook for cheating by allowing him to deny responsibility (moral and financial) for a child.

"Gosh, I just don't know if that child is my husband's. No biggie." BS.

I'd probably kill him and bury him in the backyard, but if I didn't, part of making things right with me is making things right morally (taking care of the child).

IMO you ought to go easy on a person with cancer, and she’s a relatively young woman with young children, too. I’d have felt sorry for Eva Peron, never mind Elizabeth Edwards.
Still...compassion is one thing, credulity quite another. When she says she doesn’t know if the child is her husband’s, when she says whether or not she loves him is complicated...people, these are such simple questions. These are not things we don’t know, or have trouble gleaning through the mist.
She’s hawking a book. Nothing necessarily wrong with that either, but if I were their daughter I would prefer that she write some other fairy tales.
And yet...I suppose judgment may be affected by medical treatment, heartbreak, and an oncoming untimely demise.
Oprah is another matter. Her I can blame, for televising this weird premature self-post-mortem.

Much like Hillary, Liz rode the Edward’s pony toward the WH, loving the limelight. Her only regret is that he didn’t win. They even exploited her illness.

It’s clear, they only loved themselves. What a toxic couple. I pity their kids.

All of you! You appear unkind, unforgiving, unChristian or Jewish. The personal invective against this woman shows that some FReepers are truly petty and mean.

I disagree with Elizabeth Edwards’s politics. But she did not know her husband was cheating. She did not condone it. It devastated her. The fathering of the child probably was more painful to her than her cancer.

She wants to spend as much time as possible with her surviving children. If she divorced him, she would lose a lot of time with them. She homeschools the two young ones so that she can spend even more time with her precious children.

HAVE SOME SYMPATHY, people. She is dying of cancer. She wishes to spend as much time possible with her kids. WOULD ANY OF YOU DO ANY DIFFERENTLY? Thank goodness her house is 27000 feet, so she doesn’t have to see him much.

You know, on one level, I agree with you. On another, the woman is on Oprah to flog a book. If she wants to spend every possible minute of her limited time with her children, why is she doing that? Money? She has enough? Attention? Probably.

And in the past she has thrown herself into ugly partisan fighting, hoping that her illness would give her a King’s X from any counterpunches. That’s not right, and it is cynical. If she keeps putting herself in the arena — whether for monetary or political gain — she’s fair game.

I don’t believe her story, which is designed to make it look like she believes this is the first time he cheated. That is just what Hillary tried to do when Bill was caught redhanded. I suspect that Edwards has always been a bit of a hound, and that she has always known it. But, a 28,000 square foot house and the prospect of immense power makes up for a multitude of sins.

Maybe I am just mean. But, it looks like, to the very end, she will be engaging in political posturing.

I don’t know why you directed that to me in particular. The thing I objected to was her use of the word “it” to identify her step daughter. I also called her appearance on 60 Minutes “sleazy,” which it was, but I said that I hoped she lived to be 80. But, if you want to say that her only motive in all of this was to spend as much of time she had left as possible with her children, then it begs the obvious question: How do the necessary weeks away from home on the campaign trail not conflict with that desire. You can have one, but not both.

I will agree with you that I don’t get why the book. It does not fit with the other things I know about her. I would not have done it. But maybe she felt she needed a swan song. She probably was forced to not write about the baby. She is not in a free situation because of her own priorities.

Surely you jest.

This woman cares about her kids? Really?

Then why, if she was "dying" and had "terminal cancer" was she out campaigning for her husband to become the President of the United States?

What was more important then--her kids or her lust for power, along with her husband?

No sympathy here. She's lived a lot longer with this terminal cancer than some of my loved ones.

She and her husband are two of the most shallow, conniving, dishonest and untrustworthy people this country has ever seen.

Her book is further proof of this.

And what is this pap about not knowing if the baby is John's. Weren't DNA tests performed?

Can't Democrats EVER tell the truth?
