President Barack Obama celebrated Cinco de Mayo a day early by holding an event in the East room of the White House with Mexico’s Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan.
At the event Obama botched a joke when he said it was “Cinco de Cuatro,” which means fifth of four. The president apparently meant to say ‘Cuatro de Mayo’ or the Fourth of May.

Last I heard it it strictly a celebration for mexicans in the USA.
It's not celebrated in mexico because they have their own independence day just as we do.
Puebla is celebrated in the US as the only battle mexicans ever won other than the Alamo.
Also, IIRC, both victories were followed by resounding defeat.
