Two towns in Berkshire are suffering a rise in the rat population because vermin have developed near-immunity to standard poisons, pest control experts have warned. The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) is calling on the Government to allow the use of more powerful pesticides to contain Britain's growing rodent population. It is estimated that their numbers have swelled by 13 per cent in the past year to more than 50 million, one for every person living in England. doubled in the past 12 months. Exeter council has seen a 66 per cent rise in vermin call-outs in 2008, while there was a 40 per cent rise in Salford. The BPCA says the situation has also escalated in two Berkshire towns, which it has not named, because the local rat population is now almost completely resistant to the standard poisons. Oliver Madge, chief executive of the BPCA, said: "We are very concerned about this from a public health point of view." A Freedom of Information request found Reading Borough Council tackled 428 rodent infestations in homes between April 2008 and January 2009, and 646 between April 2005 and April 2006. Other EU countries allow the use of the powerful poisons outside, but there is concern this endangers birds and pets. Rats and mice are capable of spreading more than 35 diseases, including a fever inducing nausea and muscle aches passed to humans either via a bite or the rodent's urine.

Yes but the cats will get sick and they can spread disease...

I have a indoor cat, but if any outside critter attempts to come in, they will be quickly caught and persecuted

I think it's dangerous to use poison to control rats (and mice). Cats work very well, also some dogs (ratters). Since my wife has a problem with pets, I got a Rat Zapper (Classic), which also works very well.

Warfarin?

Brodifacoum?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brodifacoum

Brodifacoum is a highly lethal anticoagulant poison. In recent years, it has become one of the world's most widely used pesticides. It is typically used as a rodenticide but is also used to control possums and other mammalian pests.[2]

I began seeing mice in my house around two weeks ago. I put out the typical Victor snap traps and caught one the first night. The next night one tripped it without getting caught.

I then caught three more in three nights by tying the cheese in with thread. Since then the trap bait has not been touched. Hope I got them all.

A lot of the rat poison I see on the shelves lately is for Warfarin-resistant Norway rats. We had a rental house across the road that finally got bought by a realtor a few years ago, and renovated for public sale. When they tore out the inside walls, the place was infested with rats - the house was rented out to a succession of lowlife trailer trash by a redneck slumlord who never put a penny into the property. The rodents abandoned ship when they gutted it, and the whole neighborhood ended up with them. Every spring, we have to put out baits to kill them - they tunnel everywhere, even under the foundation. Thank God we have a bazillion dogs and cats in the neighborhood to help control it.

They need an Imam to recommend a rat based curry recipe named ‘Death to the Great Satan’ and the rat population will plummet.

Jack Russell Terrier

I have 3 Rat Terriers and a Jack Russell/Rat Terrier cross. Before I had the Rat Terriers, my wife had a Jack Russell terrier as her falconry dog. He died suddenly one afternoon after eating a poisoned roof rat that entered my yard from a neighbor's yard. It's poison OR JRT/Rat Terriers. You can't do both. Your pet will die in the process.

When I was a kid we had some kind of small terrier mix. She would sit on the back steps with my dad while he listened to the ball game and had a few beers. Dog would fly off the porch and bring rat bodies back as a ‘gift’ to him.

The first time it happened, he was sitting on the steps and leaning back with his hands a bit behind him on the porch. In the dark, the dog set the rat on his hand. A bit of a surprise.

Put a gummy bear or other sticky candy in the trap. Bit of cheese too. The gummy bear cannot be taken without the trap springing shut

Yuck. I can tell when our pups have indulged in a squirrel. It leaves a fishy smell on them.

I had a more direct approach to surprising my dad. He put his 12 oz can of beer on the floor after taking a couple sips. The next time he raised it, it was empty. I was 2 years old. Mom says I didn't quite make it to my bedroom before flaking out for a long nap.
