OTTAWA The Canadian Press has learned federal officials are set to announce the swine flu virus is believed to have infected pigs in Alberta.
A government source says the animals were thought to be infected by a farm worker who had recently been to Mexico and fell ill upon his return.
This may be the first time this particular swine flu virus has been found in pigs.
The H1N1 virus, which is made up of swine flu genes, is believed to have jumped to humans some time back and has been passing person to person.
The World Health Organization has insisted there is no evidence that pigs are passing the virus to humans, or that eating pork products poses an infection risk.
Genetic testing shows the pigs in Alberta were infected with the same virus responsible for cases in California, Mexico and other countries around the world.

Let’s give it back to pigs. They can keep it.
A Person gave it to Pigs??? Isn’t that ASS BACKWARDS??
I’m tellin’ ya it came from a petri dish, not from a pig
govt will ban pigs:)
Pork will be cheap through the summer.
“It came from a petri dish”(and ground zero was Mexico. Thats why healthy young people died in Mexico then the virus regressed in strength as it was transmitted world wide, from person to person.
This could be a really bad indicator though,
swine to human to swine could be really dangerous
as it could mutate with each passing?
Yes.
And it can also mutate with our “normal” seasonal flu.
We appear to be on the verge of a wave of influenza that will probably infect most of us and to which we have no immunity.
This is just the first wave. The second wave which will arrive toward the end of the year will make today seem like a picnic.
OMG Noooooooooooooooooo Now the U.S. Customs enforcements guards would actually have a reason to take my husband’s ham sandwiches that they took in 2003 during the mad cow scare. They would actually have a legitimate reason this time. (Sarcasm intended) long story I’ll tell you about it sometime.
LOL, I can, no I can’t, lol,...oh yes I can imagine that!
What do they do if you had ham for breakfast, and cross the border before you ‘dispose’ of it.
Do they have a beeber for that?
I feel for you.
A very cute US Customs beagle found a remaining bit of dried, salted & cooked German salami in my bag. They handed me a $200 ticket for “smuggling” beef.
I just wanted my salami back.
Since I crossed the border on a K-1 (fiancee)Visa which is only good for one trip south hubby had my power of attorney to go back and handle the sale of my home. He stayed with my daughter who made him some ham sandwiches for his own consumption during the 12 hour drive back here. He got to the Rooseville border crossing and the border guard took the sandwiches and tossed them in the garbage!

It occurs to me that surviving the mild type might be beneficial if it helps develop an individual's immunity at least somewhat prior to the second wave, or not, depending upon how it reassorts...
Scrutiny of the verbiage seems to indicate speculation.
Yes, oddly enough it might be beneficial to get it now before it comes back in the fall and winter.
Of course, not getting it at all would be best.
That’s how it “evolves” to something new and nasty.
Just wait ‘till a pig gives it to a chicken who gives it to a person.
