Immigration arrest of missionary puts focus on LDS policy
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 5/1/2009 | Sheena Mcfarland

Jose Calzadillas spent two years serving his faith as a Mormon missionary. He worked with the Spanish-speaking community in Ohio, spreading the word about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and doing volunteer work on his days off.

Those who knew him in the mission field describe him as kind and hardworking.

When he had completed his two years, he attempted to board a plane at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, only to be detained by Customs and Border Patrol officials for having improper documentation.

Follow up article from last week's news about the LDS church knowingly sending illegals on church missions. This article is from the SL Trib - caught between being anti-LDS and pro-illegal. Bottom line seems to be the LDS church is a sanctuary church, but doesn't want to admit it.

A secondary issue here is why this kid thought he could get on an airplane WITHOUT a photo ID that met "real ID" standards?

It's hard to believe anyone in the US, legal or not, could be that ignorant of normal processes.

Maybe the LDS church doesn't realize that it is taxpayers (that's you and me) who are supporting no telling how many gazillions of these illegals while they continue to live here.

Is the LDS church paying their medical bills? Is the LDS church paying extra for them to attend taxpayer supported schools? Is the LDS church paying extra for all the social programs these illegals are using?

It's fine for churches to help people---but not at the expense of you and I.

Well, living here in the land of Zion, I can tell you that illegals are the "800 pound gorilla" - nobody in the media or politics says a word about it. Yet the quality of life here is headed toward third world standards quite rapidly.

As a long-time resident, I'm heading out in a few months...

When does the nonprofit status of the LDS come under investigation for breaking immigration laws?

Am I wrong, or is the bottom line here that the guy is in this country without proper authorization and got caught? What am I missing?

I'm afraid that the old adage: "You can run, but you can't hide" will be in play wherever one goes. It looks to me as if the whole world is going the same direction.

Could these possibly be the end times?

The moral dilemma for all the pro-illegal alien orgs:
Maricopa county attorney Andrew Thomas released statistics last year that even though Latinos only make up 9% of Maricopa county they were convicted of 19% of the county’s felonies. Latinos made up 44% of forgeries and frauds and 85% of false id convictions from the prior year. Because forging and falsifying documents is a felony most Latinos living in the country are committing felonies.

It's a continuing story from last week. Yes, the missionary is an illegal, living in Utah, and sent on a mission for the LDS church.

What the arrest exposed, however, is that the church has been doing it for decades, with the full knowledge that the missionaries in question are illegals. The full knowledge and support from the top-most church leadership. When questioned about it, church leadership comments focused on how to limit exposure to the news and practice, not how to stop it.

LDS missionaries came to our door the other night, first time in the 12 years we have lived here.
They specifically asked my husband if there were any Mexican families in the neighborhood.

The money lines from the article:

The Salt Lake City-based church has taken a don't-ask, don't tell position on membership for undocumented residents.

And it supported a 2005 federal law amendment that gives churches legal immunity for having undocumented immigrants do volunteer service, including serving missions.

"We do want to be as responsible, as helpful, and certainly always as legal as the church must be to make sure they can give their service, which the law provides, have a religious experience, and feel like they're doing good," LDS apostle Jeffrey R. Holland said in an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune last week.

"We're not agents of the immigration service and we don't pretend to be, and we also won't break the law."

"Some LDS members are seriously questioning their faith as the church continues to recognize undocumented immigrants as worthy of baptism, temple entrance and missionary work while one of the faith's founding principles is to obey all laws, said Eli Cawley, chairman of the anti-illegal immigration Utah Minuteman Project."

From the LDS Articles of Faith

Article 12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

Article 13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

THE

DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS

OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

SECTION 71

Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Sidney Rigdon, at Hiram, Ohio, December 1, 1831. HC 1: 238–239. The Prophet had continued to translate the Bible with Sidney Rigdon as his scribe until this revelation was received, at which time it was temporarily laid aside so as to enable them to fulfill the instruction given herein. The brethren were to go forth to preach in order to allay the unfriendly feelings that had developed against the Church as a result of the publication of some newspaper articles by Ezra Booth, who had apostatized.

1–4, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon are sent forth to proclaim the gospel; 5–11, Enemies of the saints shall be confounded.

1 Behold, thus saith the Lord unto you my servants Joseph Smith, Jun., and Sidney Rigdon, that the time has verily come that it is necessary and expedient in me that you should open your mouths in proclaiming my gospel, the things of the kingdom, expounding the mysteries thereof out of the scriptures, according to that portion of Spirit and power which shall be given unto you, even as I will.

2 Verily I say unto you, proclaim unto the world in the regions round about, and in the church also, for the space of a season, even until it shall be made known unto you.

3 Verily this is a mission for a season, which I give unto you.

4 Wherefore, labor ye in my vineyard. Call upon the inhabitants of the earth, and bear record, and prepare the way for the commandments and revelations which are to come.

5 Now, behold this is wisdom; whoso readeth, let him understand and receive also;

6 For unto him that receiveth it shall be given more abundantly, even power.

7 Wherefore, confound your enemies; call upon them to meet you both in public and in private; and inasmuch as ye are faithful their shame shall be made manifest.

8 Wherefore, let them bring forth their strong reasons against the Lord.

9 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you—there is no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper;

10 And if any man lift his voice against you he shall be confounded in mine own due time.

11 Wherefore, keep my commandments; they are true and faithful. Even so. Amen.

What gets me is that if a potential missionary is guilty of breaking ANY OTHER LAW, then he would not be deemed “worthy” to serve on a Mission. Sounds like favoritism to me.

Is there a list of requirements to meet in order to “serve a mission” ???
