A member of the U.S. delegation that traveled to Mexico City as part of the advance security team for Energy Secretary Steven Chu exhibited swine flu-like symptoms upon his return, and three members of his family have tested positive for the A H1N1 virus, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs announced on Thursday.

The unnamed staffer tested negative himself, but Gibbs attributed that to the amount of time that had elapsed since the onset of his own symptoms.

The staffer felt ill three days after his arrival in Mexico City, which was April 13th. On the following day (April 17th), he developed a fever.

He returned to the U.S. from Mexico on April 18th. He traveled on a United Airlines flight from Mexico City to Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C.

Gibbs did not know the flight number. He also did not know if other passengers on the flight had been alerted to the situation but said that he would check.

Obvious word of warning: if you were on a United Airlines flight from Mexico City to Dulles on April 18th, you should be cautious.

All four individuals (staffer, his wife, his son and his nephew) experienced only mild symptoms, were not hospitalized (or even given medication), and have recovered.

Why was a member of the advance teams family on the plane to Mexico? And did they pay for their airfare?

I did not see where the family member was on the plane, just the advance team member who gave it to his family (allegedly) when he got back.

They could have caught it from the gardener, for all I know.

Or, they might not have it all.

I think the unintended consequence is that instead of blaming Smithfield's pig farm (which should not get the blame, anyway) for the flu, there was a backlash against open borders and illegal immigration.

I think that despite the widespread nature of this bug, mostly brought back from Mexico, and occasionally transmitted here, we will find there are relatively few fatalities.

In the meantime, it has been used as a media smokescreen for the Sibelius confirmation, Koh's Confirmation hearings, 'Hate Crime' Legislation, and the ruinous Budget bill, and God only knows what else.

I find it odd that this has been going on in Mexico for some six weeks now, and we finally learn about the disease from the Canadians.

What did our government know, when?

Why weren't we informed, why wasn't travel restricted or at least discouraged?

Why weren't the Borders closed?

Because (rather transparently at this point) the Obamites wanted a panic and media frenzy. Biden even did his part.
