I LOVE tornadoes (except the whole people dying and losing their homes bit, obviously). I’d love to be a spotter/chaser.

I have a suggestion if you'd like to make a positive contribution. Get one of these and hook it up to your truck, wait for the tornado to get close, then head for unpopulated areas with the bait.

For one season I worked with National Severe Storm Labs out of Norman, Oklahoma. I was an Air Force guy who sent up the weather balloons, from a field site near Piedmont OK.

One day we worked from 10am to 4am; it was a long day/night with thunderstorms all the time. One tornado missed us, but hit some nearby houses. I remember the radio instructions from the radar operator: Take Cover!

Where? We're in a friggin’ field!!

We could hear the tornado, but could not see it because it was DARK. We had to spot it through the lightning flashes while the rain went right into our eyes...the winds were over 50 mph at that time.

You don't forget times like that.

I’m with you Julia. That is always something I would love to try.

I’ve got to add to this and say how much I agree with this! I’ve always been intrigued with the phenomena from back when The Weather Channel would air specials on them. Severe weather is a deep interest of mine, and all we get in WNY is a couple lightning strikes a year (if you don’t count the blizzards, which bore me to tears by now).
