Microsoft revenue falls for first time in history
KING5 ^

Posted on 04/23/2009 6:38:28 PM PDT by djf

SEATTLE -- Microsoft Corp. said Thursday its quarterly revenue fell from the previous year for the first time in its 23-year history as a public company, and its profit fell more sharply than Wall Street was expecting.

The shortfall illustrated the toll the recession has taken on the world's largest software maker, even though Microsoft remains one of the richest and most profitable companies. In January, Microsoft said it needed to resort to its first mass layoffs, cutting 5,000 jobs, and on Thursday it announced it would do away with merit pay increases for employees in the next fiscal year.

bummer, one of my biggest stock positions is in MSFT.. they own a jewel of a market position, I hope they don’t blow it. Oh well... I’m in for the long run.. I still think they are very under priced.

Just be careful because the long term growth is not there.
If you are not familiar with the law of large numbers than check it out. For stocks, when a company gets big which can be $10 to 20 billion in sales, growth rates in excess of 10 to 15% are almost impossible especially in the long term. MSFT is now like a utility stock. Ditto Cisco and Oracle.

Diversify too.

I wouldn’t stress it unless 7 bombs, which it shouldn’t. Most of the tech sector is seeing a contraction, except for Apple which is making money hand over fist over things like the iPhone and app store while their pc division lost market share.

Apple used a freeeware operating system called BSD as the foundation of their op system. BSD is a very stable version of UNIX. It’s sort of like Linux except you are not required by its license to publish source code if you make changes to it.

MS should have done the same exact thing to create Vista...and kept XP compatibility by having XP run in a virtual machine if you need it. MS really needs to abandon its old code base and give up on backwards compatibility...leave that to XP in a virtual form.

It’s an evolution... as far as PC’s go, the core position (them who need/have pcs vs. them that don’t give a hoot) is pretty much full.

We see now a swing towards the brainier machines, the small mobile types of tech, a merger of phone/pc.

Pretty soon ALL phones will have computers/wireless/gps built in.
ALL TV’s and radios.

Their assertion that this is solely an economic problem, is laughable. Not to say it hasn't influenced, or hastened it, but there are other options now. And really, what does upgrading your OS past XP really buy you?

Not a whole hell of a lot. And Office, why do the vast majority of people need more than what was available in Office 2000?

They don't and there are other options available now. Server, Workstation, and various software. OpenOffice, is free, and a quite capable product. MySQL, Postgress, Evolution, Firefox, etc and so forth. They're out there, they growing and evolving.

Server side, Linux is quite capable, even in an M$ environment.

I would look at diversifying my positions if I were you.

I trade on the 210EMA model which means I’m OK right now from about 18.60 per share.. I think market position is helping with long term growth. If I keep the 210EMA positions set in, MSFT should be fine.. it has kept me very profitable even through this downturn.

Apple didn’t use a freeware system. They have two licenses-in-perpetuity to the original AT&T UNIX via UC Berkeley, prior to FreeBSD.

I am extremely diversified. MSFT has zero debt and about $15 Billion in cash on hand so I have some pretty good faith for them for the next couple of years at least. I also have some nice rules set in so if they really break off the EMA, my positions will be fine.

Microsoft is still making tons of money, so much that there was really no need to cut all those jobs and do the other crap they’re pulling. That said, it’s their company to do with as they please and unlike their hero Øbama they make more money than they spend.
I would venture to guess that a large proportion of those who got shit-canned from Microsoft voted for Zero so if I was a spiteful poster I might say they got what they deserved but unfortunately the rest of the country is also paying, and will continue to pay, a steep price for electing this inept asshole.

???

210 exponential MA? As of today it closed at $21.42 for a 210 EMA. The 210 day EAM slope is starting to level out or may be getting closer to ending it’s downtrand.

$18.60 was your entry point? So you have a target sell range? Selling covered calls?

If you prefer you can PM me back or also tell me to mind my business too. ;-)

MA’s will keep you out of trouble.

Actually that's not accurate -- Apple has a proper license for BSD Unix dating way back.

Really makes no difference, there is nothing in the BSD license that would prohibit MS from just using it as they see fit.

Diversify quickly. It has been sheer madness to bet on MSFT since at least 2006. They have huge structural problems, they are bloated and inefficient, and they have not been able to make money out of anything but MS Office and Windows.

And new, MS Office is attacked by free offerings such as the excellent Open Office, while the latest incarnation of Windows bombed in the marketplace, while being increasingly threatened by Linux on the server and Macs on the desktop.

Sell while it’s still worth something.

I believe that's true.

In any case, if Microsoft decided to use Unix for its understory, it's impossible to imagine anybody objecting.

I know a couple guys who are testing Linux running on a mainframe.

The advantage? One mainframe can run hundreds of Linux instances.

Physical server farms are a thing of the past.

Windows is no longer the only operating system that comes pre-installed on new PCs. Dell is now offering Ubuntu on its mini laptops. I bought one and it runs great—very stable and has all the plug-ins I need already installed. $199 plus tax. I love it.

Yes, Linux on zSeries mainframe has been steadily growing. If even IBM cannot keep its mainframe ivory tower insulated from Linux's progression, what chances does Microsoft have?
