Rudy Giuliani slams Governor David Paterson, Democrats in Albany
New York Daily News ^ | Tuesday, April 21st 2009 | Elizabeth Benjamin

Posted on 04/23/2009 11:43:29 AM PDT by presidio9

Rudy Giuliani went on the attack against Gov. Paterson and his fellow Democratic leaders Monday night, saying they should be "ashamed" about New York's failing economy.

"The governor, all the statewide officials, the legislators should be ashamed anytime we're in a very low position, in an anti-competitive position," Giuliani told Republicans at the Albany GOP's annual Lincoln-Reagan Day Dinner. "Because we don't have to be if we follow the right policies."

Giuliani, who continues to be coy about whether he will challenge Paterson in 2010, touted his record as a fiscally responsible tax cutter and said that what New York needs is a "Reagan reorganization."

"Ronald Reagan did for the federal government what needs to be done for the state," Giuliani said. "He cut spending. He made government efficient."

A Siena New York poll released Monday showed Giuliani beating Paterson, 56 to 29, in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup.

Earlier in the day, Giuliani held a private meeting at the state Capitol with the Senate Republicans. He said he praised them for sticking together to vote against the budget deal Paterson struck with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, and encouraged them to keep it up.

I can’t stand Giuliani’s liberal social positions, but I wonder if he could turn New York around.

I know I'm gonna get slammed but there is something I like about Giuliani. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't vote for him but I like him a hell of a lot more than McCain!

In my opinion either Governor or Senate are exactly the offices Rudy should have run for before he ever even considered running for President. He had great name recognition and popularity after 9/11 and lord knows we could have used a Republican Senate seat from NY.

“I like him a hell of a lot more than McCain!”

Giuliani’s certainly a better speaker, that’s for sure! His speech at the RNC was really good!

He did a great job running New York City and people still remember that. He should go for the governor’s office. But, as someone has said, keep him out of national politics.

Rudy by far was better than McCain. I don't agree with his position on abortion, but if you remember he pledged to nominate Alito, Roberts type judges to the bench if he were to be elected. McCain made no such inclination, and even made praises on his fellow Arizonian Sandra Day O'Connor at one of the debates. There is really not much substantial the President can do about abortion until Roe v. Wade is overturned.

He also had a massive tax cutting plan would have fought BHO tooth and nail.

I’m with you, and the rest of the people on this thread. None of us want Rudy for president, but he is far and away the best we could ever hope for coming out of NY state. For that matter, the people on FR who hate Michael Bloomberg need a lesson on what NYC might expect from a real liberal mayor these days. The Dinkins era would start to seem like Camelot (the real one, not the liberal Kennedy spank-fest).

Social issues are for the most part not the business of government. If we need the government to enforce our social positions, then they are obviously not strong enough on their own. The only thing I ask government to do is to stop subsidizing degenerate behavior and stop facilitating the destruction of families and society.

Rudy Giuliani has done more to counteract liberal rot than any other American. He transformed NYC from an absolute crime-ridden hellhole into a vacation dream. No other politician has come close to his accomplishments. Rudy Giuliani is the only politician with the guts to go after liberal fascists with a vengeance.

Abraham Lincoln was smart enough to realize you have to win first. The Bible thumpers in the GOP are too dumb to figure this out, which is a huge reason why the GOP is dead, dead, dead.

Agreed! Rudy needs to do time in the senate to move more to the right to counter his record. HE has the same problem Romney has. He had to go left to get elected in his state and that really hurt him in the republican party nationally. Zell Miller would have the same problem with Democrats.

The main problem Zell Miller had was that he respected and was friends with George W. Bush, the kiss of death for 3/4 of all registered Democrats. If you don't think Bush was (A) evil or (B) a manipulated retard, they want nothing to do with you.

If these poll numbers hold up he won’t even be running against Patterson anyway. The Democrats would run someone like Cuomo instead.

Even aside from all the "social issues," Giuliani was a complete non-starter for the White House.

His biggest problem is that his success as NYC mayor was predicated on the kind of totalitarian approach to governance that most voters -- even liberal ones -- find completely unacceptable.

I supported most of his efforts in New York City . . . mainly because I don't even think of it as an American city at all. It's more of an international commercial center than anything else, which is why most people praised him for cleaning up New York City the same way they marvel at the cleanliness of a large Asian city like Tokyo or a city-state like Singapore (all the while ignoring their law enforcement methods that would never be used here in the U.S.).

Governor or senator from NY is where Rudy should have been years ago. Running for president was a stupid pipe-dream.

Ten years ago he was about to run for senator, get divorced, and be diagnosed with cancer.

Really? And look who has the job now - a community organizer is his claim to fame along w/his 'present' votes. What were his accomplishments? what do we know about him?

Now that's a pipe dream!

The Senate is a dead-end to the Presidency. Obama only won because he ran against another Senator. Governor would be a much better track to the White House.

Rudy is running for Governor.
His opponent will be Andrew Cuomo.
It will be a close race.
