Freddie Mac CFO David Kellerman commits suicide
NYExaminer ^ | April 22, 2009 | NY Examiner

Freddie Mac chief financial officer David Kellerman was found dead in his home today. (April 22, 2009)

Freddie Mac chief financial officer David Kellerman — who became a celebrity because his company's risky real estate loans helped to fuel the mortgage crisis — was found dead in his home this morning. Police said he committed suicide.

Police didn't disclose the specific cause of death, according to the Associated Press, but they did say they found him in the basement of his $900,000 suburban Virginia home, where he lived with his wife and 5-year-old daughter.

Neighbors say he had lost a lot of weight and seemed to be stressed out. You would be too, if federal prosecutors were investigating your company's business practices.

The government seized Freddie Mac after it bled more than $50 billion of red ink. More than $45 billion of taxpayers' money was used to try to shore up the failed mortage giant.

Though Kellerman himself was not targeted in the investigation, he was in line to get bonuses totaling $850,000 over the next year, according to the AP report. Lawmakers don't tend to be happy about huge executive bonuses when the money is coming out of taxpayers' pockets.

Freddie Mac and sister company Fannie Mae plan to pay more than $210 million in bonuses in 2009 and 2010.

C'mon. An $850,000 bonus would make anyone suicidal.

Lezsee now, Rahmbo was on the Freddie Mac board for quite a while, paying out big bucks to political friends from the Freddie Mac coffers. Rahmbo had this dead fish routine and knife stuck in the table schtick to frighten his enemies. I wonder where Rahmbo was last night.

Maybe he just felt some appropriate shame over what he might have done to screw the economy into the ground.

In Japan, this would have been normal. It's what Chuck Grassley referred to about a month ago.

Is it me or are they trying to spin it as if the bonuses had something to do with it? I find his pending bonus totally irrelevant to his suicide.

Exactly! Fox said “someone” called 911 at about 5 a.m. “Someone”? A family member? Who else would be in the house at that hour? Who would be looking for him at 5 a.m. (if not a family member)? And I wonder what the actuaries say about suicide by hanging, at home, in the basement, at that hour if there were family members at home.

Frankly, I wish it were Franklin Raines. I know that’s ghoulish, not charitable, and un-Christian, but nobody is going to hold the filthy crooks at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac accountable because they are complicit with Congress in creating this mess, so the least they could do is dispatch themselves.

The bonus didn’t have anything do to with it, but capitalism certainly did. Capitalism is evil and drives people to suicide. Even though it’s a Government Sponsored Enterprise, it’s close enough to capitalism to smear it with a broad brush.

Oh please. As long as the money is going into their own pockets or those of their friends, they are thrilled.

Others 'got away with murder' at Freddie, but this poor guy had a different fate, apparently.

Jamie Gorelick (yes, THAT Jamie Gorelick of 9-11 Brick Wall fame) earned an estimated $26,000,000 serving as vice chair of Fannie Mae from 1998 to 2003.

The Clinton administration's White House Budget Director Franklin Raines ran Fannie and collected $50,000,000.

Big Democrat Jim Johnson, recently on Obama's VP search committee, has hauled in millions from his Fannie Mae CEO job. Johnson earned $21,000,000 in just his last year at Fannie Mae.

Think of why the Obama administration has been unable to fill almost all of the top spots from deputy secretary on down.

No one with any professional reputation and credibility on Wall Street is going to throw it away now by joining an Administration hell-bent on driving America and the world into the mother of all depressions.

Thus these jobs get filled either by incompetent sycophants or inexperienced scapegoats.

David Kellerman was apparently not the former and may have been unwilling to be the latter—and that probably sealed his fate.

If he did commit suicide, perhaps it was for him the only way out of a personally and professionally untenable situation. If he was murdered, he had plenty of people in Washington with motive looking for means and opportunity.

He's been with Freddie Mac for many years. I'm going to guess that when the full story comes out, he was one of the architects of the current collapse of the housing bubble. He at least had more personal honor than Bernie Madoff, who is sitting in jail, hoping for a Republican administration to give him a pardon.

If the rest of your life is not worth living, due to either debilitating disease, or incredible shame with a strongly likely prison term, then why live it? This individual obviously made that very calculation and came up with the same result.

So will Barney and friends haul those folks before Congress and berate them like they did with the AIG folks? THAT should be interesting to see, since it was Barney and his friends who set these corporations up in the first place.
