Not being a physics guy let me as you some things.
What we are seeing actually took place 17,000 light years ago right? So when the article uses “is” shouldn’t it be was? Isn’t it true that we don’t even know if this is still there anymore?
Also how do they come up with 1700 figure? What does that mean? That the state the system is in “as shown” would be 1700 years in the making? Very confusing.
Or do they take into account that the universe is expanding and this is what happened in the last 1700 earth years?
The publicly acknowledged debt is currently about twice that.
Other “promises to pay” in the future for Social Security, etc. are about ten times that.
My question.

Still hard to image that. The light from the sun get to us in what 7 minutes? Amazing when you consider one dollar for every mile light could travel in one year.

Yes, it means the image/event we are seeing today occurred 17,000 years ago. However, 17,000 years is 'no-time' on scales like this. These types of processes go on for hundreds of thousands, even millions of years.
