This Tax Is for You: A levy on Joe Six Pack (1900% Increase of Beer Tax)
Wall Street Journal Online ^ | April 15, 2009

Posted on 04/16/2009 4:02:25 AM PDT by VermiciousKnid

Today is the dreaded April 15, but at least in Oregon it's even going to cost you more to drown in your tax sorrows. In their sober unwisdom, the state's pols plan to raise taxes by 1,900% on . . . beer. The tax would catapult to $52.21 from $2.60 a barrel. The money is intended to reduce Oregon's $3 billion budget deficit and, ostensibly, to pay for drug treatment.

OK beer drinkers, it has started for you. This legislation may not pass the first time around, but it's coming.

We told you it wouldn't stop with cigarettes.

2200% tax on tobacco was OK for non smokers, lets see how OK it is for drinkers.

Crikey! An increase of US$1.50 per pint!!!

That is a greedy grab. And it all started with the Virtuous Tax on cigarettes “it’s for the children...”

Yes, I’ll be interested to see how the “tax tobacco” people respond when it’s beer. I predict a deafening silence.

And on the middle class. After a hard day’s work, Joe Sixpack ought to be entitled to a nice cold one without the greedy gummint picking his pocket even more than it does already. Beer is the drink of the middle class.

Liberals live in a laboratory vacuum where to achieve tax revenue A, you simply increase tax rate B.

Republicans live in the real world where any idiot knows that when you raise tax rate B, it is followed by a drop in consumption, followed by a loss of tax revenue A, followed by employer D, jobs E, and taxpayers F.

The smuggler and bootlegger is about to make a comeback. We’ve gone round and round and arrived back in 1770. Hello, John Hancock.

Hope you folks in Oregon remember what your grandaddy taught you, and you didn’t throw out his old beer barrels.

Here in Michigan our governor wants to use a billion dollars of “stimulus” money to make up for the ‘breathtaking’ drop in tobacco and lottery revenue. And this was before the 2200% increase.

It is the penchant for POWER that is the cause of the Leftists insatiable appetite to spend, and spend OPM.

To a Dem, Lib, Socialist there is no limit to resources for taxing, and spending OPM, other than the business end of the second amendment to the Constitution.

The Lefties are BIG on psycho analysis, Woody Allenisms allegedly to cure themselves of all sorts of evil(s), but in actuality for the purpose of outsourcing blame for their actions, thus personal relief.

Regardless of their personal evils, this penchant for spending into deficits, and then spending into bankruptcy is a Leftist trait one can picture millions of these sorts participating in group therapy. One must never expect results other than very boring conversation about themselves.

The Leftists require a community to themselves with personal slaves, unlimited funding for self pleasures, all with the illusion of POWER. Then the rest of us will be free.

All the above over a beer!?..........YUP!

I don’t know where you’ve been the last few months, but this alleged “Joe” and his “hard day’s work” deserve nothing and are probably right-wing extremists.

Only the ones who sleep til noon are entitled to anything.

Great theory, however I’ve seen little evidence of practical application in the last Republican Congress.

They will be getting Grandpa Joe Kennedy’s rum boats out of storage. It’s just a short run to Canada.

This governmental piracy will lead to a nation of pirates.

One possible unintended consequence might be that the drug runners might start shipping booze instead of meth.

I doubt one of these politicians ever thought of reducing spending to solve the deficit. What a bunch of “Maroons!”

...ostensibly, to pay for drug treatment.

So, beer drinkers are privileged to pay for the stupidity of potheads, cokeheads, methheads, and other assorted morons...

1900% tax increase on beer. Another 2200% tax increase on tobacco.

Buy, hey! Barry still says your extra $8 a week is a tax cut!

95% of Americans did get an Obama tax cut. He then raised taxes on 2800% of all Americans.

Dittos!

Unfortunately, I smoke while I drink beer. Course I don't live in Oregon, but here in Indy, they want to raise taxes on alcohol to bail out the Capitol Improvement Board. The folks that gave us a Billion dollar stadium. I like it, it looks great, but a BILLION Dollars?

And of course with a downturned economy, who's going to be able to afford to go to a Colts game and pay six pack prices for a glass of beer. It was getting too expensive before the economy went south.

Thanks for your dittos, AFB, but I’m still waiting to hear from the Tax The Smokers crowd.

I predicted a deafening silence, and it looks like that’s what I’m getting.

I guess those nasty sin taxes are only OK for some of the people, huh?

Regards,
