Affleck reflects on the role of newspapers
Boston Globe ^

Posted on 04/15/2009 6:56:07 AM PDT by outpostinmass2

Even before "State of Play," his new movie celebrating the watchdog role of newspapers, Ben Affleck was partial to print. He grew up a reader of The Boston Globe and can't imagine his hometown paper going out of business. "I was definitely shocked to hear about the Globe," the actor told us, referring to The New York Times Co.'s threat to shutter New England's newspaper of record unless it gets concessions from the paper's unions. "I fundamentally misunderstood what was going on. Boston.com has 5.6 million readers a month, and yet this hugely successful news gathering operation is going out of business." (For the record, Boston.com had 5.7 million unique visitors last month.) Affleck, who's in town filming "The Company Men" with Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, and Chris Cooper, has been thinking a lot about the fate of newspapers since filming "State of Play," in which he plays an up-and-coming congressman who tangles with a tenacious reporter played by Russell Crowe. "Part of the erosion of newspapers is about new media, but part of it is newspapers' own fault," Affleck said. "I think the public has felt let down by The New York Times and others for not asking the tough questions, whether about the Iraq war or the subprime issue. The job of the fourth estate is to stand outside the vested interests and say, 'Wait a minute, this isn't viable.' "

Even before "State of Play," his new movie celebrating the watchdog role of newspapers,

Goebbels believed there was a "watchdog" role for newspapers.

So did Hearst (give me the pictures, I'll give you the "war").

Screw Big Media and their lies.

The purpose of journalism is to accurately report the FACTS of the day's events.

Activism in that reporting turns the report into propaganda.

Beat me to it. I wouldn’t trust that guy’s opinion on a piece of freaking produce. The fact that the article implies that I’m supposed to care is equally insulting.

Actually the public has felt let down by the Old Grey 'ore because SHE LIED. Journalists at the NY Times have MADE IT UP at times. FAKE news. Dishonest journalism.

A real "must see" propaganda film about the DNC's propaganda arm.

They covered the Iraq War: Bush=Hitler, Bush-lied, Bush=War Criminal.

The subprime issue? Your donkeys caused that assflack!

Because Afflect is your typical tree hugging, bed wetting liberal. He loves to lecture to the little people, but does not practice what he preaches. After all that is for the little people. 10 to 1 that worthless SOB itemizes his taxes and does not take a 0 for Feds and state income taxes.

The bias is just choking at the vast majority of newspapers, after they pulled that hatchet job on Gov Palin that was enough.

Let them crash, the committed malpractice now the market will seal their fate.

Doesn’t mention the tough questions to the Zero, though, does he —

“Why haven’t you produced the vault copy of your birth certificate in response to widespread claims that you were not born in Hawaii” (of course, the media had NO trouble demanding McCain’s birth certificate)

“Why are all your college and political records sealed?” (of course, they pulled everything they could on Bush to show how stupid he was - then found out Kerry was the real dummy)

“Why did you bow to the Saudi King and then lie about it?”

The Democrats rose to power in 2006 on a mantra that there was a pervasive culture of corruption within the GOP.

There is outright collusion with the DNC on newsstories (including that whole CoC claptrap, the MSM KNEW about Foleygate BEFORE the GOP and then used it to push against the GOP for “knowing and doing nothing”, subsequent congressional investigation pointed out that BOTH the DNC and MSM knew and “did nothing” except plot an October Surprise).

The Obama administration is filled with KNOWN tax cheats.

The Mainstream Media of today is no better than Soviet State Pravda was at its very WORST. The American Media today serves at the call of the Democrat Party.

They’ve gained control of this nation with their silent coup.

Lies, myth, smears. And still they shirk when you call them SOCIALISTS.

WRONG

They feel let down due to the media's liberal bias and the piss poor job they do in reporting and opining on the news. An honest conservative doesn't mind criticism on ethics, wasteful spending or deviation from the Constitution when Repubs fall down on the job. The blatant cheer leading that went on for Obama was the last straw though and it's no wonder that people are looking elsewhere for information and opinion.

The GOP was corrupt though and they deserved to be thrown out of office. If you are going to increase spending, not secure the borders and bend over for Wall St. then you have no business being in office.

The problem is the media fixates on the Repubs’ foibles and gives the Dems nowhere near the attention their BS deserves.

“The purpose of journalism is to accurately report the FACTS of the day’s events.”

That is the job of a reporter. They are journalist, so they are allowed to lie and twist the facts. Schools of Journalism should be eliminated. What’s wrong with hiring a person with a strong curiosity and an ability to write. A degree is not required for this job.
