Gingrich Eyes Possible White House Run In 2012
Google News ^ | 4/14/09 | Shannon McCaffrey

More than a decade after he stepped down as speaker of the House into what seemed like almost certain political oblivion, Newt Gingrich is back and seemingly more relevant than ever.

Gingrich seems to be everywhere these days, headlining an endless circuit of GOP dinners, popping up on TV news shows, authoring yet another best-selling book and acting as a policy guru to out-of-power congressional Republicans on how to do battle with the Democratic White House.

As beleaguered Republicans look for a standard bearer after last year's disastrous election, they've been tossing around the names of flashy new stars like Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the 2008 vice presidential candidate, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, young and Indian American in a party that's increasingly identified with older white men.

But could the GOP's savior instead be a wonkish, twice-divorced throwback to the fiercely partisan Republican revolution?

Gingrich has managed to keep himself in the public eye since leaving the House, but the blitz of public appearances in recent months is reminiscent of the run-up to 2007, when he toyed with a presidential run only to abandon it before the primaries began. Now, some are speculating that the former congressman from Georgia is laying the groundwork for a White House bid in 2012.

Grover Norquist, a prominent conservative and president of Americans for Tax Reform, said Gingrich is on nearly every Republican short list of possible White House prospects.

"One of the ways you judge these guys is how hard they're working, and Newt is out there hustling," Norquist said....

Newt, stick to what you are doing, we don’t need the same old beltway crowd any more. Maybe you can sit down with Nancy Pelosi and make more global warming commercials.

Gingrich is “Carl Rove” type, not presidential material.

Further reinforcing the notion that career politicians are like a particularly nasty strain of athlete’s foot. Just can’t seem to get rid of it.

Yeah, I don’t think this will fly.

He has some good ideas (his global warming schtick NOT being one of them), but the Dems would savage him mercilessly. With all his divorce baggage, all we need is for Obama’s operatives to dig up the court records and plaster ‘em all over the MSM — that’s how Obama gets rid of the competition, like what-his-face, Jack Ryan.

No, no, that’d be too easy.

He’s little better than McCain these days, He keeps playing both sides and hoping no one will notice... I don’t know what happened to the “old” Newt, but the “new” one sucks and would be a loser for the GOP.

He’s deluding himself. All he needs to do is read this thread. But today Rush refused to trash the idea of a Newt run — so I guess that’s why he has hope.

I do like Newt. But he had his opportunities and traded them away with the others on his watch. Okay, so maybe having seen what failure to act has wrought on the nation, he has learned and is a bit wiser today. That’s great. Become an adviser. But don’t run. McCain could shake the old-fattened-white-republican stereotype to compete with Obama. I’m afraid you can’t either. Do us all a favor and support the next generation of **conservative** minds.

I noticed lately he has been all over the radio and TV. I assume he is trying to position himself for a run in 2012. I agree with some of you. Newt has a lot of baggage and it is going to be tough for him make a credible run. He is very bright and has a lot of bright ideas. I wish him the best.

No way, Newt. Fageddaboudit.

You admitted that your biggest failure as a leader in the Republican party was that you didn’t teach Republicans how to govern effectively as the majority party.

And you were correct in that assessment. When the pubbies came into power, they took out OUR checkbooks, and went to town. You can’t possibly expect us to trust you now, can you?
