Some U.S. troops tempted by reconstruction cash

The Justice Department has secured more than three dozen bribery-related convictions in the awarding of reconstruction contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan. At least 25 theft investigations are underway.

In a federal indictment last month, prosecutors alleged that (Capt. Michael Dung) Nguyen managed to skim more than $690,000 in cash as the civil affairs officer overseeing millions of dollars intended for reconstruction projects and payments to private Iraqi security forces northeast of Baghdad. The 28-year-old West Point graduate is accused of packing stacks of cash into boxes and mailing them to his family's home in Beaverton, OR.

A story as old as war itself. Wherever there is money, someone will be there to skim some of it. It is deheartening, however, that members of the armed forces disgrace their country by this behavior.

Its gonna happen - I just hope they don’t concentrate on military when there is so much more corruption elsewhere.

It appears that ALL “government schools” are failing to teach the fundamental basics of honor, honesty, integrity, ethics and the essence of being an American...

This should be something you learn from your parents or church—school is the last place you should learn something like this. Isn’t there a book that says “Thou shalt not steal”?

I wonder why the military postal service didn't catch him. They are supposed to inspect every package going out.

Additionally, all mail is x-rayed at BIAP. This should have been spotted if the "stacks of cash" were really "stacks".
