Selective abortion in favour of males has left China with 32 million more boys than girls, creating an imbalance that will endure for decades, an investigation released on Friday warned.
The probe provides ammunition for those experts who predict China’s obsession with a male heir will sow a bitter fruit as men facing a life of bachelorhood fight for a bride.
“Although some imaginative and extreme solutions have been suggested, nothing can be done now to prevent this imminent generation of excess men,” says the paper, published online by the British Medical Journal (BMJ). In most countries, males slightly outnumber females — between 103 and 107 male births for every 100 female births. But in China and other Asian countries, the sex ratio has widened sharply as the traditional preference for boys is reinforced by the availability of cheap ultrasound diagnostics and abortion.
This has enabled Chinese couples to use pregnancy termination to prevent a female birth, a practice that is officially condemned as well as illegal.
In China, an additional factor has been the “one-child” policy. Parents who have a second child are liable to pay a fine and contribute disproportionately towards the child’s education. But in some provinces, a second child is permitted if the first is a girl or if parents are experiencing “hardship.”
In the paper, Zhejiang university professors Wei Xing Zhu and Li Lu and Therese Hesketh of University College London found that in 2005 alone, China had more than 1.1 million excess male births.
Among Chinese aged below 20, the greatest gender imbalances were among one-to-four-year-olds, where there were 124 male to 100 female births

Excess young men is a precursor to military foreign adventures. That keeps the pressure of the unruly un-marriage tamed young men off of the central government.
This situation is not unknown in human history. Way back when, it was commonly the case that there were far more males than females of "breeding age" in any population on Earth.
The cause was a high maternal death rate.
Today's relatively equal balance is an historic anomaly.

Friend of the family fought in a number of garden spots - Korea among them. He said that the Chinese were the only military he was really afraid of. Basically, they'd throw men at a target until they took it. One guy left standing on the hill waving a Chinese flag = victory.
This mentality, along with millions of expendable men, is a little scary.
Which may be part of the plan.

Excess males=Extra soldiers... and what better way for China to get rid of some of them as they become restless than to launch a war where they can shed a few of them?
If I were the Russians, Indians, or Japanese I would be a little nervous about this report.

The only real question is who these ~30 million unmarried young Chinese men will be invading. If I were a nation bordering China right about now I’d be paying close attention to this situation.
My daughter was horrified to find out the Chinese gender select through abortion.
She is determined that when she grows up, she will adopt “Three China girls”.

While it is easy to laugh about this, this is actually a deadly dangerous situation. And it exists not just in China, but next door in India, as well.
Young men, who have no chance for either gainful employment or marriage, are a disaster waiting to happen. In this case, either astoundingly bloody civil wars, or astoundingly bloody wars between those two nations. Theoretically described as “the first demographic war.”
The danger posed to both societies with this many “excess” men is staggering. So much so that both nations may decide to set them against each other in a World War I-style bloodbath, solely to kill as many of them as possible, fighting with small arms over high altitude desert mountains, while keeping their regular armies in reserve.
Given uniforms, rifles and a pound of cooked rice per man per day, with field artillery in the rear to increase casualties, this redefines the concept of Hell.
But the realistic threat they pose could end up killing many times their own numbers, and destroying much of their country at the same time.
Just makes me wonder what they will do with all those extra men. Empires past have started wars and conscripted them so they could get rid of ‘em.
I know a person writing a book about this subject and history has only one solution for this situation, start a war. They need a war to thin out the males and to get out the pent up anger, etc.
I'm not a demographer, and I have no data to back it up .... but I suspect that the real statistics are probably different from the "official" ones these folks must have used.
If I had to guess, I'd say that the official numbers are probably more dire than the actual numbers.
It would not surprise me a bit to learn that there were large numbers of "black market" girls whose births were never reported or recorded, in order to get around the "one child" policy.
This is the exact same problem that Arab and other polygamous countries have had for centuries.
Whether the cause is polygamy or abortion, the social implications could be pretty severe.
The one way dictatorships throughout history have addressed excess male populations is getting into wars of expansion. This is scary news.
Exactly. They won’t hesitate to send all these extra men to war...it solves a lot of the problem.

China is not going to think “war” with its excess males....China has a bigger problem: Their cheap labor supply will dry up.
In ten years Communist China will have major problems...too few to work....and that would mean less prison and Red Army laborers...and higher pay for Chinese labor
Of course, the Free Trader Globalists will not like this situation...for years they have subsidized Communist China withe American jobs and wealth....but will need more of that American wealth redistributed to pay for the dwindling Communist Chinese labor force.
This actually can help America...since it would no longer be cheaper to ship jobs and manufacturing to Communist China. The Free Trader Globalists may look elsewhere for cheap labor...but they will be limited...as either other countries are declining in population, or, those with growing populations do not allow women to work (Islamic nations)...thus limiting their work force.
Of course, the American economy (those who actually creat jobs in America) would benefit if China and India went to war.
And the Africans are finding that the Chinese are far more rude and racist than the Europeans; there is no sense of "white man's burden" among them, and no missionaries weighted with the Christian impulse to establish mission schools and hospitals.
The Chinese send their young men over as "security guards", not soldiers, so they are under the radar.

They will establish Chinese-run factories in Africa. They are laying the basis for it now.
I know of what I speak; there are factories being disassembled in China and sold to African entrepeneurs (just as the Kaiser steel plant in Fontana, CA was dissassembled and sent to China 25 years ago). The Chinese will figure out that they can have their contracts for cheap goods assembled in Africa.
They will retain assembling higher quality goods at home for their own people.
This shows the fallacy of central planning, a key concept too of the Democrats and liberal Republicans (like Olympia Snowe) in the USA.
So many times I have read a post then said to myself that 'I didn't know that, it makes perfect sense' only to look down and find that quite often it is yours. Way to go.
Regarding the topic, I have been saying for over a decade that 30 million testosterone-crazed young men is a recipe for war as that is the only way to get rid of them. I could be wrong, maybe there will be sharing.

Rich and powerful men will assemble more than sufficient females for their own reproductive purposes (the normal situation in the good old days).
Women will not be allowed to leave the household alone, or without guards ~ all for some very good reasons.
The custom is called Purdah.
As a footnote, back in Jeane d'Arc's time a woman found alone on the road could be raped at will by any passing man ~ according to the laws of the time. As recorded by Boisguillaume, the priest who served as the court clerk (at her trial) all the male witnesses were asked about any feelings of lust they may have had in her presence (as a woman alone) and what they did about it. The church officials and others expressed amazement that the men had not had their way with her.
That's barely 6 centuries ago.
