During a time when young women in the United States have few role models and Britney Spears' misbehavior is fodder for the airwaves, former First Lady Laura Bush continues to represents American womanhood at its best.
While Mrs. Bush may have been thought of as an old style first lady because although she was a woman with strong opinions, she understood that her place in the White House was to bring dignity to her role as the first lady of the land.
The song, "Stand by your man" might describe the way Ms. Bush supported her husband during his presidency. While she did not favor overturning Roe v. Wade, she did it quietly, with her usual reserve.
Mrs. Bush represented something that is not often seen in a political setting: wholesome, not flashy, and doing little to draw attention to herself. This is not to say that she did not make a stand, such as being against the junta in Burma.
Perhaps Laura Bush learned from the first ladies that preceded her: Mamie Eisenhower, Pat Nixon, Betty Ford, and Rosalyn Carter. She did not have the glamor of Jackie Kennedy but brought the quiet dignity that exemplified her style.
Now that Ms. Bush has returned to private life, she will continue to be remembered as a First Lady who did America proud.

She set the bar high for first ladies: grace, dignity, refinement, kindness, good humor, good works, wifely love and devotion ... and humility ... and she is greatly missed.
~~First-rate First Lady ........... PING!
Both of the Bush ladies are first rate.
We’ve sure lost a lot of ground.
...and sleeve material.
Thank you for this thread. I just posted on another thread that I am going off to bed now trying to pretend that this is still our first lady. What a class act. Beautiful inside and out.
God bless.
And now we hear about how the current first lady has great muscle tone in her arms......
The headline says it all.
And diva style false eyelashes.
Laura Bush put the Lady in First Lady.
In an incredible short amount of time
Now we have first woman. Or as the rappers say, first **
That would be because the mainstream media didn't have 'A Slobbering Love Affair' with Mrs. Bush. But the MSM did and does have a sickening, slobbering love affair with the Kennedys and Obamas.
Have you taken a look at a magazine rack lately? Last time I counted about a half a dozen magazines devoted to the Obamas.
You could feel the love! What a shining example of marriage and devotion. They just moved in up the street, but how I wish they were still at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Don’t we all. They’re your neighbors ? Wow .. that is special. Have you seen them out and about ? Please give them huge thanks and love from the Dosers, should you see them. We’d love any news on the “Dose” .. which is the monthly thread linked below.
A recent update about Laura:

She is a truly elegant lady.
I did not care for him to much but I always enjoyed seeing her come on the tube for any reason. just a warm, classy lady. that is a wonderful picture of them.
My Belle should have toned arms at her age. It should come natural if you are active. I would be embarassed if the only thing people could compliment was my arms. Crazy talk.
Worlds apart.
Great picture.
Compare with the 'fist bump'.

Somethin' about those eyes just gives me the willies.
Yep Star, she sure is missed. I have a feeling that she will be more and more appreciated as time goes by.
After less than three months of Dumbo and Dumb Dora The Bushes look like George Washington and Martha.
Didn’t have “toned” arms though....../sarc
You and me both! It's like their own little code look for 'we fooled em, and we got here, and we're gonna do things OUR way!'
She looks like that bride who ran away in GA.
Somebody remind me of what she did. Eight years and I can't think of a thing. Did she have a *cause*?
The internet is your friend.
Yes, she did. She was a school teacher and went all across the country encourageing children to read. She and Jenna wrote a childrens book as well.
The Press did little to campaign for our dear first ladies cause. She was gracious and lovely as well. I miss her.
sw
Too bad she didn't do anything to advance the cause of Conservatism.
**Laura Bush: A First Lady who made America proud**
Definitely! And not a bad speaker either.
. . . literacy is such an anti-conservative cause! /sarcasm off
Michelle Obama=no class.
Great First Lady - classiest EVER. Laura worked hard for the freedom of women in Afghanistan (and their literacy), worked with the Millenium Challenge in Africa, and worked for freedom in Burma.
She did more for the cause of freedom than any First Lady has ever done.
And for me, freedom is one of the fundamental conservative principles.
But obviously some around here disagree with the whole fight-for-freedom thing, eh?
Sad.
