Vandals destroy memorial to LCpl Justin Ellsworth for 2nd time (before and after photos)
Vandals Destroy Fallen Heroes Monument, Son of National Pro-Troop Advocate: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Wednesday, April 8, 2009, Contact: Meghan Tisinger, Meghan@FamiliesUnitedMission.com, (202) 510-5304
Mt. Pleasant, MI April 8, 2009 Last week, a monument honoring the life and death of Lance Corporal Justin Ellsworth was vandalized on Island Park near the Michigan Vietnam Memorial. Lance Corporal Ellsworth died on November 13, 2004 which serving in Iraq. His father, John Ellsworth, is the President of Military Families United, an advocacy organization that has recently been vocal in opposition to President Obamas plans for Guantanamo Bay and the handling of the War on Terror.
My son made the ultimate sacrifice for his country when he gave his life in Iraq in 2004. The people of Mt. Pleasant, MI honored my son by collecting funds to erect a monument to honor his life and support our family, said John Ellsworth. The thieves who conducted this senseless act have taken an honorable and elegant monument to my son and made it a focal point of their hatred and destruction.
The vandals tore apart the bronze monument and stole the bronze inverted rifle and Kevlar (pics are below). The monument was built in September of 2005 and funded by citizens of Mt. Pleasant, MI. This is not the first time anti-war protestors have dishonored LCPL Justin Ellsworths memorial. In 2005, the flag pole was torn down and the flag burned using an accelerant on top of the boots, rifle and helmet. [Ed. -- see below]
John Ellsworth started Families United to honor his son and all of our fallen heroes families that have given the gift of their loved ones in defense of this country. This terrible vandalism not only dishonors Justin Ellsworth but every veteran and all of our fallen heroes who gave their lives defending our country. We sincerely hope that this was not a purposeful act of political activism or against our troops. Families United is asking the public to show their support for LCPL Justin Ellsworth and every military family who has lost someone in service to this nation by helping us rebuild this monument, said Families Uniteds Executive Director Brian Wise.
Lance Corporal Ellsworth was raised in Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. He joined the Marines on the delayed entry program while a senior in High School and left for boot camp in September of 2003. Justin graduated from boot camp in December 2003 and left for Iraq in September, arriving in Fallujah on September 11th, 2004. Justin was killed in action just 2 months later on November 13, 2004.
Tax deductable donations to rebuild this monument can be sent to Families United for Our Troops and Their Mission, P.O. Box 65494, Washington, D.C. 20035 or sent online at www.FamiliesUnitedMission.org.
Me:Two years ago, I posted when vandals destroyed the memorial the first time: Marines Memorial in Michigan Vandalized, 24 Jul 2007. Northern Michigan's 9&10news.com (CBS TV affiliate) had the story:
"Its the idea that somebody vandalizing something that means so much to so many, I have trouble understanding," an anguished Linda Fabian said while viewing a memorial to a fallen Marine from Mt. Pleasant, MI, that had been vandalized.

When Lance Corporal Justin Ellsworth died in Iraq on November 13, 2004, Fabian got to work making sure Ellsworth and all the troops who put their lives on the line would not be forgotten. Fabian's own son served two tours in Iraq.

"It wasn't about how big it was, it wasn't about how extraordinary of a monument, its what it meant and what it represented," Fabian said.

Police say someone twisted what it represents. They bent a twenty-foot flagpole, draped that flag on the monument, burned a part of the flag, stole a bronze eagle, and destroyed a lot of the flowers and plants that surround it.

"So many kids from around here have been to Iraq, are going to Iraq; they're protecting the very people that are doing this to our monument," Fabian said.

The Mount Pleasent Police Department is investigating yet, "At this point it's pretty wide open. We don't have any suspects or major leads to go on," a spokesman said. Police hope the community will bring them answers to who did this to their community's monument.

Fabian said the strange thing is, in all the damage that was done, the daisies here are the one thing that survived. They were Justin Ellsworth's favorite flower. "Justin loved daisies and if you look, they only thing that really survived are Justin's daisies," Fabian pointed out.

The memorial in Mount Pleasant was designed by Gregg Garvey, of Florida, as part of the Lest They Be Forgotten memorial effort. Mr. Garvey began his not for profit campaign to create, establish and help maintain hometown remembrances of our men and women who have lost their lives defending the United States of America in our war against terrorism after his own son, Army Sergeant Justin W. "Hobie" Garvey, was killed in an ambush in Iraq on July 20, 2003.
Someone is in need of a serious ass kicking.
Michigan has a huge islamic population. Sounds like something one of those idiots would do. And yet, America imports more.
I’d need bail money if I saw the POS doing this.
Hopefully, whoever finds them will bury the bodies where they will never be found.
“Id need bail money if I saw the POS doing this.”
Make that two of us.....
Maybe this can be classified as a hate crime....
Only way the left would take action to stop this sorta thing.
Security cameras are needed or vets willing to patrol and catch the POS.
Ping!
Put a sniper in the bushes and wait for them to come back.
As a veteran myself, this story disturbs me greatly. What sort of society do we have when it’s citizens do not respect the sacrifice of those who serve? This is very sad indeed...
This is what we get for permitting anti-American newspapers, TV shows, Movies etc..in our land. We are only getting what we have permitted. We need to crack down on such action with hard action or it will lead to worse things. People who do this will betray the nation to her enemies, refuse to defend her, and twist their rights so as to cause problems. This is what we should expect after the election of an anti-war president and his left over Hippie cabinet.
Michigan? Muslims.
Sickening.
Not if I beat you to them.
Particularly classless.
I don’t know about that...this strikes me as a group of white punks who spend all day playing XBox and texting each other who thought it would be “cool” to take the weapon portion of the statue. To them it means nothing because our society no longer instills any sort of pride or patriotism in what America is and how it came to be. We have created a generation of mind-numbed gimmee-kids that can’t think much beyond their next 6 hour long XBox session or when they get their next hand-out.
There aren’t too many Muslims in Mt. Pleasant. More likely it’s some angry 0botomized late-teen/early 20’s libs.
I support that approach
On dope!
I should know...I used to be one :)
shoot, shovel, and shut up. It works for destructive wild animals.
I see the pathetic, sick and stupid are at it again.
One them as the sight attached to...
I’d much rather shoot, drag by hair, hang at edge of park, walk away but that might be a little extreme
Send them to the worst sh*t hole Afghanistan has to offer for a year or so...guaranteed they will never vandalize another memorial again...if they survive that is.
More hate and intolerance from the left.
“Michigan has a huge islamic population. Sounds like something one of those idiots would do. And yet, America imports more.”
The VERY first thing I thought, too.
Unfortunately, I fear that many of our countrymen are simply not worthy of the military’s incredibly brave and selfless service.
From the bottom of my heart, I apologize for these fools, and thank you for your sacrifices.
We had an issue this weekend at a bar. 4 of us were outside smoking when a kid (30ish) came out and started with Obama love.
He went on and on and that prompted me to ask if he still lived in his Moms basement. I then said get out get a job ( lives off parents and works making pizzas 1-2 days a week) or go see the world like my son in the AF.
He says, “ I hope he dies”. I went for him, little beotch ran back into the bar to his buddies and I had his jacket in my hands.
Hubby wouldn’t let me go after him lol.
“As a veteran myself, this story disturbs me greatly. What sort of society do we have when its citizens do not respect the sacrifice of those who serve? This is very sad indeed...”
Products of the liberal public education system followed by four years of marxist indoctrination in college.
Put his jacket up for sale on eBay
Tubes!
Couldn’t some kind of trackin’ device be installed? Lead LEO right to the punks house!
Vandals need to spend every weekend for the next two years emptying bedpans in the VA hospital.
“A good beating to those who have it comin”
No it doesn't. It sounds exactly like what some commie leftists would do.
There aren’t many things that top this form of depravity. No amount of hatred, however, can ever trump the respect, gratitude, and love we have for our heroes.
It’s funny, we found out the next day that this creep has been trying to get a date with our oldest girl. She was at the bar too but we didn’t go back in. I told her what he said about her brother and she can’t wait to run into him again.
We told her to scratch him off the list, he wouldn’t make it long past the vows. ;)
I suspect this was the act of some high school kids, pumped full of hatred for our war effort. They may have seen it as a prank, or simply a way to express their displeasure with the war effort. Either way, it disgusts me.
This guy sacrificed his life. There’s a reverence that is called for. If you disagree with his devotion to duty, you can still respect that fact that he paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Write a letter to the local paper and have it printed. Hand out leaflets that express your views. Heck, put a sign in your front yard. Don’t deface a memorial like this.
It reflects poorly on you. It reflects poorly on your views. It reflects poorly on those who think like you do.
This act was disgraceful.
Whoever carried out this act was failed somewhere along the way. They were not taught respect. They probably don’t respect their parents, their siblings, their family members, their teachers or anyone else. There seems to be a lot of this going around these days. And we have our liberal anything goes moral relativists to thank for it.
I see pee on it and give it back.
pumped full of hatred for our war effort
BRAINWASHED BY THEIR LEFT-WING SCUMBAG PROFESSORS TO HATE THE UNITED STATES
I say pee on it and give it back.
Whoever they are just proved they are COWARDS! Someone should put a camera in those trees and catch the jerk/jerks.
I know little sissy girls who could probably kick their asses.
No doubt, that too...
Moral relativism:
no right or wrong
no black and white
there are only opposing views of equal merit
nothing is worth defending
Islam is equal to Christianity
evil is equal to righteousness
do whatever you want... it’s okay
This all fits in with the idea nothing has value, no job is necessary and nothing is worth working for.
It’s a wonder our 20 year olds aren’t sitting around on street corners in a pool of their own drool.
They are generally fairly resilient, no matter what is taught in our schools. How this must piss off the left.
Now, that is funny!
Don’t you just love little COWARDS?!
Definitely.
No it doesn't. It sounds exactly like what some commie leftists would do.
I agree. This sounds like the work of those idiots that used to go to gravesite burials and disrupt the activities.
I wish I could be there when my daughter runs into him. She is as sarcastic as they come and has a mean streak a mile wide with defending her siblings. Hope someone with her has a camera.
She can’t wait to tell him he ran from a 51 year old Grandma in front of his buddies.
Id need bail money if I saw the POS doing this.
Make that two of us.....
