Yes, We Can . . . Disarm?
Washington Post ^ | April 7, 2009 | Anne Applebaum

It is no fun to be the one who rains on the parade, and, if nothing else, President Obama's trip to Europe has been quite a parade....Still, someone has to say it: Although some things went well on this trip, some things went badly. The centerpiece of the visit, Obama's keynote foreign policy speech in Prague...was, to put it bluntly, peculiar. He used it to call for "a world without nuclear weapons" and a new series of arms control negotiations with Russia. This was not wrong, necessarily, and not evil. But it was strange.

Clearly, the "no nukes" policy is one close to the president's heart...The rhetoric was Obama's -- and so was the idea. Look at his record: One of the few foreign policy initiatives to which Obama stuck his name during his brief Senate term was an increase in funding for nuclear nonproliferation....

...as the central plank in an American president's foreign policy, a call for universal nuclear disarmament seems rather beside the point. Apparently, Obama's intention is to lead by example: If the United States cuts its own nuclear arsenal and bans testing, then, allegedly, others will follow. Yet there is no evidence that U.S. nuclear arms reductions have ever inspired others to do the same. All of the world's more recent nuclear powers -- Israel, India, Pakistan... we've unnecessarily handed Moscow a bargaining chip...ridding the world of nuclear weapons would be very nice, but on its own it won't alter the international balance of power, stop al-Qaeda or prevent large authoritarian states from invading their smaller neighbors. However unsuccessful the promotion of democracy has been, it is, ultimately, the only way to achieve these goals...

How flawed and dangerous this policy must be if even the Washington Post sees the risks and disastrous outcome it will bring our country?

The WaPo editorial page is more conservative than the rest of the paper, particularly on foreign policy.

Can anyone say “nuclear blackmail?” The left will never learn.

The unraveling of the Obama presidency begins. When a policy threatens this country’s security, as this does, not all of the media will ignore it.

Since this time last year, the oped page has been more rah-rah Obama than conservative, when the chips were down, and especially the three months before the election. NOW they begin to wake up?

dittos ... slow learners.

Just wait until Iran gets at least one nuclear weapon in orbit. Where it comes down, no one knows, until we push this little red button right here. Continental accuracy is just fine.

Did you read the comments from the article? They sickened me. How in the world did we come to this point? I really truly don’t want to live with these crazy people around me. To think people of their mentality are now the majority, a generation ago we really dropped the ball, big time.

Never forget: National security trumps everything. The primary task of the President is to protect and defend the US and its citizens. If your country gets nuked, nothing else matters.

Those who place a higher priority on butter (luxury) over guns (defense), endanger all of us.

Just who is it that might have their priorities upside down, anyway?

There used to be a “Mommy Party” (butter) and a “Daddy Party” (guns). Here’s what we have now:

The Islamofascists tell us to drop our nukes and turn around everything will be fine.

Yeah right!

They have sworn to conquer or convert us or kill us; not ignore us.
