OREM, Utah -- Kirk Jowers has an answer for whether Mitt Romney's presidential bid was lost because of Mormonism:
"I can unequivocally tell you that the answer is 'yes, no and maybe.'"
owers' comment elicited laughter at the "Mormonism in the Public Mind" conference on Friday, April 3, at Utah Valley University. He is director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah and associate director of the Institute of Public and International Affairs.
According to Jowers, in October 2007 many pundits were saying Romney was on his way to winning. He had focused on the early primaries and was overcoming the deficit of name recognition between him and John McCain and Rudy Giuliani. "It looked like he might actually run the table," Jowers said.

Plus the so called Huckster did not help Mitt and gave us the Mummy McQueeg.
Well, his money almost bought it for him (and probably knocked some other good contenders out of the race). That said, the guy is a raving liberal, and wasn’t even pro-life until he realized he wasn’t going anywhere without it.
No, his religion had nothing to do with it. Like McPain, Romney couldn’t get the conservative support because people saw right through him as “Slick Mitt”.
Except that McCain is more conservative than Romney is.
Er, exactly why should anybody have “helped” Romney? He was even more of a RINO than McCain.
I don’t think it was the liberalism or the religion. It wasn’t the religion because being a moslem didn’t hurt Hussein. Being a liberal didn’t keep us from being saddled with McCain as a candidate.
It was that the msm WANTED McCain v. Hussein for the championship game, and they engineered it to get what they wanted. They wanted Romney, Guiliani and Hilary shuffled out, and they were shuffled out. They wanted Hussein to win so they ginned-up the September economic crisis.
It was a banana-republic window-dressing election from the get go.
What’s Romney’s religion got to do with him losing ???
Rudi is a Catholic, and he lost too...
But not because he is Catholic...
Duncan Hunter is a Baptist, and he lost too...
But not because he is Baptist...
RINO is a religion?
"Romeny-care" cost Romney any chance he will ever have for the Presidency.
That being said, democrats will happily persecute him for his religion and continue to play that angle as if it were from within the republican party.
True conservatives will simply continue to reject him on his policy.
Unfortunately for Romney, the MSM had been preparing the attacks on the LDS for over a year before the election, in preparation for his candidacy.
Unless mormonism somehow convinced him to pass socialized medicine, propose a “bail out” of GM like Obama, and be pro-abortion and ant-gun his political career, I’d say “no.”
That's my point with my /sarc comment. A lot of people set this up early on to blame religious bigotry, however, I doubt that 99.999% of people even gave it a second thought. Like myself, I'm sure most Conservatives wouldn't mind a Mormon president in the least, as long as he was a strong Conservative. The thing is Romney's politics sure didn't match what I understand the LDS church stands for.
I will believe Romney’s religion is not a factor when posts attacking Mormonism are not allowed on the News/Activism section of FR.
It may or it may not have. But I don’t believe he is the one we need now.
Actually getting called a bigot every time I suggested I may not vote for him is what really cost him my vote. He may not have said it but many of his supporters made their feelings known.l
This post definitely wasn’t posted with the intention of attacking Mormonism (as our Mormon members can tell you, I am pretty quick to defend them against unfair attacks).. if anything, it is to separate Romney the Liberal from the religion he claims to stand for..
Huckster, Mcqueer, and Romney put together weren’t worth a bucket of warm spit.
We had no candidates, except Fred, and Fred was too damn lazy to run.
ouch...
I have no doubt that there are some who voted against Romney solely because he is a Mormon. But I am also quite certain that many voted against him solely because he did not hold conservative positions on their hot button issues.
1. He had already conceded before most of the conservative states even held their primaries.
2. He is extremely moderate.
“Except that McCain is more conservative than Romney is.”
Wow Mitt is right up there with the Drunk Kennedy.
I wasn’t saying you posted for that reason.
I am not even saying that Romney doesn’t have a lot of liberal sspects that should be criticized.
However, I think allowing anti-Mormon threads on FR diminishes the otherwise high quality of the web site.
But it’s not my web site, so I do next best, try to answer the attacks.
Nice of you to feel the pinch and confess.
We had no candidates, except Fred, and Fred was too damn lazy to run.”
Right now our Woman Palin and Bachmann are the only Ones with guts.
Wow that says a lot for our Party.
End of thread!!
Indeed, it is.
Right...
Try looking up the definition of Non Sequitur...
Also your post 25 was a hoot.
There was a time your were selling Mitt as the aspects” you now seem to want to acknowledge to bolter your “it's the anti Mormons fault” argument...

You mean you try to troll, and when that doesn’t work you troll s’more.
“Er, exactly why should anybody have helped Romney? He was even more of a RINO than McCain”
I do not think that Mitt was working for Obama like McQueeg was.
When will the postmortum/debriefing finally end ???
The election was 6 months ago and Romney dropped out 15 months ago...
There was a time you were selling Mitt as the conservative second coming, what are these new “liberal aspects” you now seem to want to acknowledge to bolster you “it's the anti Mormon's fault” argument...
Smart phones and freeping are a pain...
how could it have if Hussein’s didn’t?
Try iPhone where you can't cut and paste and the touch screen keeps trying to put in the wrong word.
Fool me once is a foreign concept to them...
Blackberry is worse, spell check adds HTML code sometimes...
Well, personally, though I am a Christian who believes Mormonism is a false religion, I would have liked Mitt much better, and been much more likely to vote for him, if I thought he were a better Mormon.
The same issues (abortion, homosexual agenda) that made him a MINO (Mormon in name only), made him a RINO. I simply did not buy his supposed SoCon conversion.
It was Romney himself and his campaign spokesmen who kept bringing up the issue of religious bigotry. At least that was the case until Huckabee got involved.
But Huckabee ain’t my idea of a Christian, frankly. He’s a snake oil salesman, and he seems to have been working for McCain at that point. Out of the other side of his mouth he was busy accusing Fred Tompson of being pro-abortion, which is an outright lie.
I haven’t tried FReeping on my Blackberry yet..
Apostle Orson Hyde: I discover that some of the Eastern papers represent me as a great blasphemer, because I said, in my lecture on Marriage, at our last Conference, that JESUS CHRIST WAS MARRIED at Cana of Galilee, THAT MARY, MARTHA, AND OTHERS WERE HIS WIVES, AND THAT HE BEGAT CHILDREN. All I have to say in reply to that charge [that Jesus was married and had children] is this --- they worship a Savior that is too pure and holy to fulfil the commands of his Father. I worship one that is just pure and holy enough "to fulfil all righteousness;" not only the righteous law of baptism, but the still more righteous and important law "to multiply and replenish the earth." Startle not at this ! for even the Father himself honored that law by coming down to Mary, without a natural body, and begetting a son; and if Jesus begat children, he only "did that which he had seen his father do." (Journal of Discourses, Volume 2, page 210; brackets mine)
They would unleash on him if he won the primiary, and we CHRISTIANS would not back him up. No Romney !!
I think you hit on a key point.. Fred was probably the most Conservative who actually could have stood a chance, but, due to his NBC contract forcing him to get in late, I think it allowed for the RINOs to get together and paint him as something he wasn’t (lazy, pro-abortion, pro-gun control and every other lie drummed up).. The stars where aligned against Fred in more ways than one. It is hard to come back when your opponents have that much time to define you and you can’t really rebut.
I am talking about hijaacked threads. If it about Romney, there will soon be posts that are simply attaacks on Mormonism.
No one is so blind as one who refuses to see. And you refuse to see for obvious reasons.
Yeah, really. Enough is enough. None of the other former candidates keep on with this crap day in and day out, only this one.
Oh, silly me...
I’m still waiting for my 2012 program...
:)
“...and gave us the Mummy McQueeg.”
Face it. We had no good options.
