Tie a yellow ribbon [Mark Steyn]

Tie a yellow ribbon [Mark Steyn]

A few days ago in The Corner, I mentioned the South Yorkshire Police, who sat outside watching as a young couple and their children burned to death, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who sat outside a Greyhound bus for four hours watching a cannibal slice body parts off his victim and eat them. Now from Binghamton:

One receptionist was killed, while the other, shot in the abdomen, pretended to be dead and then crawled under a desk and called 911, he said.

Police said they arrived within two minutes...

Police heard no gunfire after they arrived but waited for about an hour before entering the building to make sure it was safe for officers.

What's the point of calling 911 if they arrive within two minutes and then sit outside for the rest of the day to "make sure it's safe"?

At the Dawson College shooting in Montreal a couple of years ago, a couple of officers happened on the scene to investigate an unrelated drugs incident, called for back-up, entered the building with guns drawn, and shot the shooter - all in three minutes.

If you ever have to call 911, it may be worth requesting that kind of service rather than the world's most heavily armed and lavished equipped yellow-tape installers.

It’s cheaper to let a citizen die or be harmed than to risk a dead officer. Apparently.

It all depends what city you are in. Most cities are lib-fascist controlled, and the police are hogtied by political correctness. In Sacramento, California, for example, the police department spends most of its time investigating itself for non-existent “racial sterotyping”, and training in domestic violence. The funny thing is, they’ve already purged many of the european-american males, so while they are busy calling themselves racists, they are also mostly minority. I think it’s time to start thinking about hiring private security and ditching government police forces. They aren’t up to the task and they are becoming agents of socialist government.

Good grief, the wounded secretary was on the phone with them too! they knew what was going on inside, so why did they wait over an hour?

I could understand them waiting if they had no inside contact, but they did.

“To Serve and Protect” . That “motto” appears on many police cars.
I say , if a cop is not under direct fire, he should be advancing toward the incident.
Who knows how maany lives might be saved if the perp directs his attention to the only other armed person on the scene.

I remember the teacher who bled to death at Columbine, while heavily armed police and SWAT teams remained outside. Same at Virginia Tech, where the cops were shown on the news arriving and then spending valuable time donning all kinds of gear before they stood outside and waited. The truth is, when SECONDS count, the police are MINUTES away, or there there and more concerend with officer safety than stopping an assailant.

(Note that I realize that many, if not most, cops would want to go right in, but their SOP and desk-jockey/office-pogue leadership won't allow them to.)

Just as with 9-11, the ONLY thing that would have had a CHANCE of stopping, or limiting, these tragedies, is a law-abiding person (or pilot, in the case of 9-11) who is ONSITE and carrying a deadly weapon (normally, a handgun hidden in a holster used for Concealed-Carry).

As Steyn says, "the world's most heavily armed and lavished equipped yellow-tape installers" are essentially, USELESS in stopping these, thankfully, RARE incidents.

No problem with me, that’s why I said some other comments are here. I am fine with articles being posted at different times so everyone gets to see them. I know I can not be here all day every day.

I’m going this week for my permit. I’ve been saving and found the perfect gun for me. A lightweight 38 special. I like that’s lighter and can carry in my purse.

Ok we probably don’t have all the facts we need in these cases, but just as a mental exercise, might it not be better if we contracted out police duties? If market forces do what they do in other industries, competition would force better police response in such situations.

There are cops and there are other cops. There was a mass shooting at a nursing home in the southeast a week or so ago that was ended when the only cop on duty in the little town arrived, went in and shot the bad guy. That’s the sort of cop we all hope will arrive when we are in trouble. Someone refresh my memory with his name and jurisdiction as we should praise the good cops properly.

After the teacher bled to death at Columbine, police from many small upstate NY communities, state police and school officials were trained in the new way of doing business. From now on, a highly trained small group of officers would burst into the facility with the object of shooting the shooter. The school officials were trained what to do when the officers burst in, weapons drawn and shouting orders. I guess nearby Binghamton didn’t get the memo.

"A lightweight 38 special."

Don't let anyone give you grief about your choice, it's a solid weapon. Practice, practice, practice. Point shooting, instinctive shooting, shoot from the hip.

Is it a S&W or a Taurus or some other weapon.

Smith & Wesson. And you make a good suggestion about the shoot from the hip. If I aim wildly while jerking it out, it does no good.

Thanks for that. I’ll remember to practice that at the shooting range.

I'll say what nobody else seems to be willing to say...those cops were COWARDS.

Even if there are standing rules suggesting they "secure the perimeter" and "wait for tactical units"...they were cowards to not enter a prevent further bloodshed.

I would have entered (granted, only if armed) as a private citizen.

Savage had Jerry Brown call in and say Burbank has too many internal affairs investigating to be free to act.

That mayor in New York was more aggressive.

Name escapes me.

They are (once again) chewing up I-40 in Tijeras Canyon.

Inevitably, something happens and the only thing the cops do is stand around with their hands on their pistol butts while some hapless tow truck driver tries to direct traffic.

Worthless pieces of excrement.

A lightweight 38 special.

A fine choice. Now don't forget the speed loader and extra ammunition.

And get thee to a range and practice!

Then maybe they should be joining us in protesting some or all of this never-ending parade of silly laws that put them in harm's way to enforce.

And I’m going to buy ammunition with every extra cent I have. For the pistol AND rifles.

Good plan.

Do pick up a couple of speedloaders for that revolver.

I recommend the Safariland brand. They're a bit quicker and easier to use than most other ones.

Best,

L

That might be a good idea. The Nut cases who go on the killing sprees don’t need automatic weapons.

Or are you also saying the Police shouldn’t be called out
on someone gunning down people.
