France, Germany endorse Obama's Afghanistan plans (Totally misleading and biased title)

France and Germany fully endorsed President Barack Obama's new Afghan war strategy but continued to firmly resist U.S. demands for more combat troops on Saturday in a rift that overshadowed symbols of unity at NATO's 60th-anniversary summit.

Obama told NATO leaders the alliance should remain open to new members, another stance that is likely to meet resistance from his allies. Germany, France and many other NATO nations believe that any more eastward expansion will further damage ties Russia that the alliance is trying hard to mend.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and two dozen other NATO leaders walked across a bridge separating Germany and France in a moment of unity before the summit began. The leaders met French President Nicolas Sarkozy at the halfway point on the Europa bridge spanning the Rhine river — a symbolic departure from the enmity that once tore apart Europe and a setting aside of current differences, at least for a few minutes.

That’s the problem...it’s all politics.

Unfortunately, radical Islamists do want to destroy Western Civilization, and England is a perfect example...

i totally agree that radical Islamists do want to destroy western civilization... and yes politics is allways the problem. it is rotten from inside. it´s not only england, it´s most parts of europe... for example i live in austria (btw. this is not for you but for other people who might read this.. “not the country with the kangaroos” :-)
you can see it every day on the streets that integration of islam does not work... does any politician care? answer no! they are too busy repeating again and again that there are no problems and all is fine... Do you really expect this people sending our boys and girls to a forreign country to fight islamists if they even don´t care what happens in our own countries? and for your experience that europe hasn´t really changed in the last 30 years. i´m sorry i can make no statement on this because i´m too young. i don´t know how the political situation or the society in Europe was 30 years ago
because i´m “only” 29 years old ;-)
greetings

No black and white for you,is there friend?
No good or bad guys no good or evil no Islamofscists or their marked for death citizens of Western Civilisation.

Thats good because the Muslim murderers depend on such Cordell Hull Foggy Bottom and Dag Hammarskjold UN “give peace a chance” diplospeak to hamstring us as they plan their next nonsecular genocide.

The Hutu loved you people in Rwanda back in the earl 90s.

If America hadn’t kept the bad guys from making you swim the Atlantic to freedom all these past five decades you wouldn’t have had the money to squander on failed socialist welfare hand-outs that are now destroying your economic futures (and ours, now that we foolishly elected proxy Euroweenie leftists).

Did you know that Japanese diplomats were talking peace in Washington DC on December 6,1941?

Europe is on the verge of tyranny again but even though BHO thinks he is FDR,he is no FDR as far as Europe is concerned.

You will regret him more than us,I’m happy to say.

History is a be-yotch, isn't it?

I have no doubt that under-30's like "jonny foreigner" have been taught a highly sanitized version of world history.

Sadly, too many of our politicians know little of history, such as the comments like "worst economic crisis since the Great Depression". I'm thinking, "Dude, I remember the Carter Administration, and the 'Misery Index'".

Oh,don’t get me started on the Carter Depression that RR rescued us from.

Too many bad memories there.

Yes no black and white view from me. No eternal good and bad guys... because the world isn´t run that way if we like it or not. i know this now may sound very anti american (but this is really not my intention). But do you really believe that the US is the only “force” of good on this planet? that all they do is spread freedom and prosperty for all people on this planet?btw. i´m not saying that they are all bad, i´m only saying that politicians and people use for example your army and political power for their own goals. just like politicians in europe do. they are acting in their own or maybe what they think is in americas best interests. Same here in Europe. there exists nothing like good and bad countries only personal interests. example all EU countries and it´s people are bad because they don´t want a war with Iran in any form and they are willing to sacrifice Israels security for that (because iran is more important than the state of israel too “our” buisness)? Answer no. the simple answer is just there are no benefits for europe if this may occurs but there are benefits in the current situation (trade, oil...) at the end MONEY. does this benefit the US? No because they have other strategic interests in this region. Does this make Europe bad and america good? yes if you only see the world in black and white. but then again your politicians still back saudi arabia (you know the guys who brought you 9/11) for the same buisness reasons. Now whole america is evil because of that? i guess not. thats why i don´t view the world in black and white. politics is dirt buisness. there is no eternal good or bad in politics just different interessts.
and i don´t say that this is all good or it should be this way but unfortunately this is the world we are living...

and btw. The Hutu loved you people in Rwanda back in the earl 90s.???? i don´t get the message in this statement. first who are “we” (and if “we” means europe) what has a genocide happening in Rwanda to do with Europe?

First off Eurotrash, (is that better?) learn to format a proper paragraph before you troll this garbage here.
Your endless run-on sentences without sentence breaks is annoying

well first calling all europeans as euroweenies (btw. this includes me because i´m european too) without any valid argument is a little bit lame.

Nope, sorry you earned it over the last 60 years of avoiding any military commitment to anything at all as you developed under the protection of the US.
You worked hard at that scorn and you deserve it - every bit

do you really believe that troop commitments to afghanistan from europe have anything to do if some one “loves” or “hates” america? then welcome to the world of politics.

Exactly the thinking that earned you the term "euroweenie."

then again troops who are fighting right now in afghanistan are defending western civilization?

Of course they are.

this war was lost at the beginning because to occupy afghanistan has never worked or achieved anything in history.

Proudly do you wear the coward's crown

newsflash the taliban are not interested in destroying “western” civilization outside their country.

NEWFLASH: I was there, and you are wrong. - so freaking wrong that it makes me ill to even respond to you.

this are a bunch of local religious fanatics who never cared if they kill their own population, their selfs or anyone else. as long as they can fight someone they seem to be happy. the only thing they like more then killing each other is killing forreign troops.

Yes, by all means, lets leave this festering trash alone again until they explode over us again, showering our streets with the bodies of our women and children. - by all means.

to really stop this you would have to annihilate the whole population in afghanistan.

No, you do not. - you are just spouting the same leftist drivel that you were taught to spout - Too bad that you never learned any independent thought.

and even this would not solve the terrorist “problem” because the terrorist (you know the guys who really want to kill us all and our “western” world) would then again move in from bordering countries like pakistan.

Stupid beyond belief. We just shake our heads. "Euroweenie" is a kind word for what we are thinking about you.

so given this whole situation

Certainly. Lets postulate that your fantasy is actually a fact and then do nothing at all.

how does a european politican explain the public why he/she will send in more troops to fight and die? what is the goal?

Sigh

untill you find something you can tell your people in your country sending in more troops is just political suicide back home. that´s all. has nothing to do if someone likes america or not, just daily politics.

It has everything to do with our different system of values.
Personally, I'm all for telling the EU to f*ck off, but there are some good people left there yet.

Still, you have fought tooth and nail not to fight and that is the definition of a weenie, ipso facto

The goal is to kill as many freakin Muzzie Terrorist as possible. The European Union and NATO allies in Europe are a bunch of backstabbing little bitches. First they bitch about President Bush finally going after Saddam even though they are the ones who would pass resolutions but never enforce them. It's the little Commie Bastard Obama who was yelling that Afghanistan is the “good” war and the NATO allies were cheerleading along but now when it's time for our allies to back their words with action, they're nowhere to be found.

hey i´m all for killing muslim terrorists every where “we” can find them. for afghanistan i don´t know if it´s a “good” war but i think it´s a war which has to be fought in some form. i have never been against the war in afghanistan in general i only dissagree on “details” how this war is fought or if “we” can win (what ever this means in afghanistan) this war. and for Europe. As i said more troops are just not possible (for simple inner political reasons) right now. has nothing to do if i agree or dissagree with this decision in personal. this is just the politics Obama will have to deal right now. maybe this will change sometimes maybe not but right now it´s a fact. and for Saddam... Simple. there was no benefit for most EU countries in a war with iraq. thats all.

Then the European Socialist Slimebags better shut their damn mouths or contribute troops. It's kind of hard for them to justify their “endorsement” of “Obama’s plan” if they aren't willing to back it up with some real help.

I didn't think anyone could be more of a joke than Obama but the Europeans sure are proving me wrong.

Simple. there was no benefit for most EU countries in a war with iraq. thats all.

Not picking on you, jonny, but those of us on FR have grown weary of Europe (in general) not shouldering their share of the burden...for decades. The average European government loved the cash our servicemembers added to the economy, and lessened the strain on their military budgets.

What thanks have we gotten for our efforts, at least since the Berlin Wall fell? Other than scorn, derision, and condescension, not a whole freakin' lot.

Please understand me when I say I truly loved every minute I spent in Germany. I entered not knowing a lick of Deutsche, and left with accentless near-fluency, the kind that engendered quizzical looks from those whom I had never previously met. The friends I made along the Mosel River, and in Northern Germany (specifically Todendorf and Lutjenberg) left me with so many fond memories.

Hopefully you can now understand the anger we feel when we're told "there was no benefit for most EU countries in a war with iraq".

I'm especially leery of Obama's foreign policy, and the rest of the world should be as well. He has proven an adeptness at throwing friends and family under the bus, when it's convenient to his agenda (i.e. his own grandmother, Rev. Wright, etc.). Don't think he won't do that to our allies at the drop of a hat.

not picking on you too. really not. but europe has become wary (in generall) on america too.let me add one thing. the standart european does not think he owns you anything. americans might think that they are responsible for our defence. well they might have been after WWII. but even if true (and i grand you that) what do you expect from the standart european right now? you are no longer responsible for our defence. the cold war is over.. for me i have never seen the cold war. those people who have fought for “us” have died away like the people who would be greatfull because of that. the standart american right now has not fought on the beach of the normandy. and the standart european has not fought on the beach too. so why be gratefull? do you thank the french every day because hundrets of years ago they helped you? i will thank you if you will actually do something for me. really. but i will not be greatfull because people i have never known fought against “my” people i have never known too. again i have no anti american feelings in generall. there are people i like and there are people i don´t like and i don´t give a rats ass if your passport says american, german, austria, french... or what ever. i don´t judge people because of their country.
i judge people because of how they behave. don´t get me wrong. there is nothing wrong to be proud of your country, but an american who tells me i should be gratefull because of something back in 1945 or what ever sounds so offending to me. because he and myself have not lived in this time. so you won´t get any credit from me untill you are for example 90 years old and you fought. even then i will only respect that you did this but nothing more. then again there is nothing like the “average” european. europe is not a political or socical union. there are many differences. the wealth differs from country to country. the people differ from country to country. you can´t generalize. for example a famous american sterotype about europe is without us you would all speak german. sounds good but i do speak german. so there is a difference whom you tell this. a citizen of england may feel more offended because of that like for example a german citizen.
and for the military you are correct i do agree to some point. europe does not share its burden (at least if “we” think that an “american” conflict is an european conflict too. but it it is not. fact is for example the US and the EU have total different goals and interessts on global stage. they have been more similar in times of the cold war but now they differ in most ways. yet we are allies. (and we are allies because we all represent “western” civilization against enemys who want to kill us all and don´t care about our nationality. they hate the “common” way of life (even if this way differs a little bit from country to country) we all live. but this is where the problems start. for example america does not buisness with iran. EU does buisness with iran. do “we” agree about their politics? well i guess no but we like and need their oil and the trade. on the other side does america agrees saudi arabias extreme islamic politics? well i guess no but you too back them and pump their oil. so “we” both may have some common goals (freedom....) but the other interessts differ. so if something is good for america it does not nessersary mean it´s good for europe too. same could be said the other way around.but then again do europeans hate america or americans. well the answer is no. we may dissagree on most things and we love to trash and sterotype each other but in times of real crisis we will allways stay together. believe me every one was shocked here in europe on 9/11 for example. no one thought you “deserved” this every body only thought OMG, OMG, how can we help you...

and let me add one thing about afghanistan. you did have the support of whole europe at the beginning. no one cared if you bomb them. no one called UN and said this is wrong. you did get troops, logistic, intelligence all you want from europe at the beginning. but then again as allways politics screwed it up as time past by. i´m not saying your or our politicians screwed it up but at the end they brought us into a situation like now.

I am glad to learn that as well Michael. Actually, upon further reflection wasn’t it the Dutch that wore them and were unionized, etc? Just out of curosity, what’s the German problem with mixing it up and getting in the game over there in Afganistan? You fellows have certainly changed your ways since WWII...
