Why is whitehouse.gov hosted in GERMANY? I'm asking.
Does anyone have any idea? This question was posed by Scott on a closed list I am on. I think it deserves a wider audience.

When I started a traceroute just a moment ago, whitehouse.gov resolved to 96.17.202.135, assigned to Akamai out of Cambridge, Mass. The actual host at the IP looked like it was hanging off a network located in Ashburn, Va. (one of the major Eastern U.S. data centers).

I just pinged ‘www.whitehouse.gov’ from a unix machine and I get IP: 96.16.242.135 which is in Cambridge, Mass

If you're using http://en.utrace.de to access it, it's probably going to hit a copy cached in Germany. FWIW, I'm in the US and for me whitehouse.gov resolves to a completely different IP address.

Interestingtha White House Gov is offshore. My bet is so that the FBI and the CIA are prevebted from hacking the White House Gov site. Typical fascist maneuverinng.
There is some stuff on that site that Obama does not want the other federal agencies to have access to.
MAYBE THE KEY IS IN GERMANY.

If you go to the German site, and type in ‘Freerepublic.com’, it resolves to Englewood, Colorado.
I thought it was based out of Fresno, CA, but at least it doesn’t point to some gateway portal in Germany.
