ATLANTA Georgia would require that new drivers take a written license test in English under a bill being considered by state lawmakers, and the proposal has some employers and immigrant advocates worried it would keep people unfamiliar with the language from being able to work.
The measure is the latest in a series of English-only legislation around the country, but Georgia is believed to be the only state that would have a law requiring that drivers take the written test in English without a translator or other aid. Versions of the bill have passed both chambers of the Legislature, and lawmakers are trying to hash out differences before the session ends Friday.

Well it’s about freakin’ time...........
English is not a bad language, overall, but I must say I truly prefer American.
Nope. They can always go work somewhere else where they don't need to speaka da language...
I think they should deliver the test in Georgian. Maybe Russian too, if you want to avoid another invasion.
It will never pass legal muster. You can’t claim that English is required to safely drive the roads since it’s established law that literacy itself cannot be a requirement and those who cannot read MUST be given a verbal test.
I hope Georgia is going to get serious about illegal immigrants.
Have you driven in a foreign county? How many times did you crash?
And those counties are???
The flip remark is to say that that was not a problem since the locals don't bother to read them either.
But, I'd be interested to know how you determined where you were. I drove in Kuwait where they had western-style freeways. I was lucky in that the town names were in English as well as Arabic. I learned their numbers ASAP so I could tell the speed limit but other than that it was still tricky - many times when searching for the company's oil camp, I got "after you leave the freeway, turn left at the first sand dune" and what few secondary road signs there were, were all in Arabic.
Oops - countries.
Ya reckon that if’n the test aint given in nuttin but English dat only English speakin’ folks from Georgia will be able to drive down yonder?
Dang time that someone stood up fer proper English instead of that other jibberish that them other folks talk.
If you don’t know where you’re going, all roads will get you there. I drove in China (never again - you need a psychiatrist after), but with directions, never had problems getting on the right road.
Go easy on them. These people just want to work hard and play by the . . . uh, I mean, make their own rules.
I don’t expect “foreign” countries to post signage or let me abuse their healthcare and education systems just because I REFUSE to learn their language.

One of these days you will depend on the folks you make fun of to save this country.
You're probably right, but it SHOULD. Unless you have an international drivers' license. Or lack of English should be for a limited time, say one year.
If you can't speak English you'll have a lot of trouble with warning signs, etc., creating a hazardous condition for others.
Or, you might be an illegal alien. Those, once discovered, should have their cars impounded and sold, their rear ends taken to jail, and immediate deportation enforced.
By trebuchet.
That’s unconstitutional, racist and anti-immigrant. It won’t happen.
“It won’t pass legal muster?” Sure it will. As long as a patriot sitting on a Georgia bench says “the people have spoken, now get outta my court!”
it is a measure of our collective madness that heretofore driving tests have been in other languages.
But, I’ve been called names when pointing out the absurdity of such a formulation for drivers.
How can you drive if you are illiterate in English.
How the hell can you give a drivers license to people who cant read the word “STOP”...
The blood of patriots and tyrants, that’s the only chance this nation has of being saved.
Well now aren’t you just mean spirited....everyone should have a driver’s license, those who are illiterate, those who can’t speak English, hell, even those who are blind, I can’t believe you would deny these people their right to a driver’s license............./SARC OFF!!
Guess again toothless. I’m from South Carolina educated in all southern colleges (Univ of SC and Ole Miss), married an Alabaman in Alabama, daughter born in SC, live in SC.
Your apology is accepted and I can let all those who are reading this and who are not from the south that not all of us make uneducated and ill-informed comments such as yours.
Lovely reply. I make NO apology, so you can accept none. Any southerner stupid enough to run down his own people has no company with me.
“All southern colleges” humm thats alot of daddies money wasted.
There isn't anything racist or anti immigrant about it. You might find this hard to fathom, but my great grandparents from Germany found the time to learn English when they moved here. It was a bit easier for the Irish side.
Anyone who thinks requiring immigrants to know English is "wacist" needs his/her head examined. There is no requirement that we conform to the immigrant - it is the other way around.
“All southern colleges humm thats alot of daddies money wasted.”
_______________
Bad news. I was on scholarhip and graduate assistantship which means it was your tax dollars wasted. As was my salary when I worked at Univ of SC, Univ of Alabama and Texas A&M. Thanks for the support and education.
And since our discussion is related to the south’s stereotypical butchery of the English language, I should point out that in your response, “thats” should be “that’s”, “alot” should be “a lot”, and “daddies” should be “Daddy’s”. A gift to my southern brother.
20 years too late.
Dat sho wuz a goot spankin’!
Certainly you mean whoopin’!!!
Yankees spank. I think they spank in the midwest and west. California fears offending the little tykes so they offer stern warnings.
My GF is Carolina born/bred and she spanks me good. I’m not telling her any different!
