I had never heard of the fire until someone on here said something about the 50th anniversary back in December. I looked it up and it was a very sad story. The OLA site has many personal stories plus other stories. Hard to believe they were about my age and so many died in the same room. Think 25-27 students were killed in a couple of rooms. Don't know how they dealt with losing that many little friends. I even bought 3 books about it. One was written by Michele McBride who was severely burned. I hope I spelled her name right.

The thing that struck me was how much alike my school and the OLA school were. My school was 3 stories and burned in 73 but no one was there. Just made me so sad seeing the pictures after the fire. I had started 1st grade in the building before moving to the new elementary school and then went back from the 5-12 grades. Some of my happiest memories were made there.

MamaB, I went to a school like that too. K-3 on the first floor, grades 4-6 on the second floor, 7th and 8th grades on the third floor. I remember the fire drills, and how we'd run down the stairs. It's a miracle no one ever got hurt.

Back then, we didn't think anything of it. Now, as a grandma, I'd be horrified to think of my little grandsons on the first floor being run over by the bigger, faster kids. Such a heartbreaking story about the children in the OLA fire.

Whenever the Lord assigns us a difficult task, He gives us what we need to carry it out. John Wesley wrote, “Among the many difficulties of our early ministry, my brother Charles often said, ‘If the Lord would give me wings, I’d fly.’ I used to answer, ‘If God bids me fly, I will trust Him for the wings.’”

Today’s Scripture tells us that Joshua was thrust into a position of great responsibility. No doubt the enormity of the challenge before him made him tremble with fear. How could he ever follow such a great leader as Moses? In his own strength it would be impossible to lead the people into the Promised Land. But along with the marching orders, the Lord gave him an assuring promise: “I will not leave you nor forsake you” (Josh. 1:5). Then He said, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (v.9). Such reassurances were the backing Joshua needed.

If God has given you some special work to do that frightens you, it’s your responsibility to jump at it. It’s up to the Lord to see you through. As you faithfully do your part, He will do His part.
