LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― The University of Southern California Wednesday announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a driver who struck and killed one freshman student and seriously injured another.
The Los Angeles County Council is offering a $75,000 reward and the Board of Supervisors will contribute $10,000, which totals $135,000.
Adrianna Bachan, 19, and Marcus Garfinkle, also 19, were in a crosswalk on Jefferson Boulevard at Hoover Street about 3 a.m. Sunday when a car heading east on Jefferson ran a red light and struck them, according to police.
Bachan, a freshman from Santa Barbara, was killed. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and majoring in environmental studies, according to USC's newspaper, the Daily Trojan.
Garfinkle, a freshman from Scottsdale, Ariz., and a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, was hospitalized at California Hospital Medical Center, the Daily Trojan reported.
After the car hit Garfinkle, the driver stopped long enough for a passenger to pull him off the hood, witnesses told LAPD officers.
The passenger was described only as a Hispanic male.
The suspect vehicle was black, and believed to be a 1999 to 2002 Honda Accord or Toyota Corolla. It had a broken windshield and extensive front-end damage after the crash.
Anyone with more information was asked to call detectives at (323) 290-6063 during normal office hours, or (877) LAPD-24/7 nights or weekends.
My guess is the slime was safe at home, Mexico, by sunup.
This is such a disgusting story. People are the worst.
Poor kids.
the two were from Santa Barbara and Scottsdale, AZ-those are both wealthy areas. USC, for those who may not know, is in/adjacent to a horrible section of L.A.—I’m sorry a “vibrant, urban” area. That story writes itself.
I guess stuff can happen anywhere—but the odds don’t favor sheltered kids suddenly in that environment.
Reminds me of poor Beau Zabel-the small town kid from Minn. whose big ambition was to go to an inner-city and teach kids. He came to Philly last year—a few months before starting his teaching job. One month after he got there, some kid shot him in the neck for his iPod and left him to bleed out on the sidewalk.
I’m trying to figure out why this incident prompted several government entities to shell out $135K. Is it because the kids are connected? Did the story get legs and they “had to do something”? I’m sure there are plenty of violent crimes that go unsolved in the surrounding “vibrant urban area” and there’s no reward money posted by the city/county/state.
yeah that caught my eye also. $135k for reward money (my tax money). I dont think they do this with all deadly hit and run cases. who was so special here???
maybe the illegal that ran them over, and the goverment figures he is long gone, so they make a false effort of solving this crime by offering a reward that they know they will never end up paying? maybe all the politicans that go for this open boarder stuff will pony up the money (not a chance!!)
Description - black hair, brown eyes, 5’4 - 5’8”, 130 - 180 lbs., mustache...answers to “Jose”
Describes about 3,000,000 people in the LA basin.
LOL.
Not a funny crime, just a ridiculous description.
Or the poor Cal-Berkeley girl who was bulldozered in Palestine.
Or a friend of mine who worked at the Head-Start program for innner city blacks who was stabbed by a “patron”. She lived, but has changed her career path.
That is a good question—You’re right-it’s usually not that high of a reward in cases like this. I don’t know.
