Flooding in Fargo eases but winter storm moves in

FARGO, N.D. – Weary residents welcomed the Red River's further retreat Monday but faced an approaching snowstorm expected to kick up wind-whipped waves that could threaten the sandbag levees they built to protect their city from a major flood.

Engineers weren't worried about the storm's snow because it's unlikely to melt soon. They were concerned, however, that crashing waves could weaken the dikes.

The higher the wind speed, the higher the threat, said Jeff DeZellar, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

"The forecast that we saw was 25 mph or more, and certainly that's enough wind to create some wave action on the river," he said Monday

I have 5 inches of new snow on the ground from the storm that came through Pocatello yesterday. The winds were steady at 36 MPH with gusts to 46 MPH at one point. That storm is moving east. It's not a day to hang onto your hat. It's a day to leave the hat and your backside INSIDE. Anything not tied down is going for a ride.

Believe this: One of my clients tried to explain how the freezing ice and floods were actually from Global Warming causing too much water on the Earth.

When I stopped laughing at her, I told her to go and look up “cognitive dissonance.”

I bet ten bucks there have been no arrests for looting in Fargo.

And that Fargo PD, unlike NOPD, stayed and served honorably.

What’s the population of Fargo versus New Orleans? Just curious.

When is Obama going to visit the region? His absence proves he hates white people.

We had that storm yesterday here in Colorado.

. It was so windy, I watched some gusts literally blow my chickens across the yard ! Then it tuned into a howling blizzard, and snowed about 2 inches. One good thing though: it blew a lot of dead leaves right out of the yard, to who knows where !

Early in the day we had the very high winds with little flurries. It was near white out later in the afternoon. I waited until 11 PM to shovel the driveway, steps and clean off the cars for the morning. My neighbor across the street has a very heavy cast iron mailbox that is normally free standing on the sidewalk. The wind blew it over with ease yesterday.

That is amazing ! BTW, I've appreciated all your kind advice about food storage, and the protein powder from Sams. I've been getting a little bit each time I shop. So thanks.

Before Katrina New Orleans was 454,865. I think Fargo is about 91,000.

What would be that difference? Fargo's metro area including its sister Moorhead MN is around 150K. If NO was 450K, there should be 2/3 less looting. Apparently, there isn't any looting. The lower population wouldn't seem to account for that.

You're welcome. I suspect there are quite a few of us that have some special dietary issues that need to be considered for food storage. Remember to choose foods you like and rotate them through your daily usage over time to keep your storage fresh.

I live in Fargo; population around 80,000 and combined with Moorhead, Mn., just across the river makes about 120,000 souls. And no, there is no looting here. Just the opposite; the volunteers have been beyond belief and a tremendous amount of goodwill abounds. We are the polar opposite of New Orleans.
