Greens gone wild - State regulators' newest targets: plasma TVs and black vehicles
San Diego Union - Tribune ^ | 3/30/09 | Editorial

For more than two years, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Democratic lawmakers have been stuck in a self-congratulatory mode over the enactment of AB 32 and other laws meant to put California in the forefront of efforts to address global warming.

Now that these laws are being implemented, it's plain congratulations aren't merited.

Few states and nations have copied California's bold approach, validating our view that climate change is a global problem that requires a coordinated international approach.

Instead, the chief result of our go-it-alone strategy will be to saddle our economy with unique burdens that will drive unemployment up and tax revenue down. Yet Schwarzenegger makes the absurd claim that AB 32 actually will help our economy, not hurt it.

That's the macro picture on the state's new green regulatory regimen. The micro picture is full of absurdities, too. It's quickly become apparent that zealots eager to micromanage all our lives are in control.

The first example of this green authoritarian streak came in January 2007, when the California Energy Commission moved to change the building code to require that all new homes and business structures completed by April 2009 have programmable thermostats that could be controlled by the bureaucrats who run the state's power grid. This was ostensibly needed to deal with supply emergencies, but was so Orwellian that it died a quick death after being publicized.

The Energy Commission still wants to inject itself into every household, however. It is considering a rule to require all televisions sold in California that were manufactured on or after Jan. 1, 2011, to meet a minimum level of energy efficiency. Why? Because TV energy costs are now “unnecessarily high.”

We certainly support making household electronics more efficient. But less-drastic federal rules have yielded steady gains on this front.

The California approach of demanding a quick forced transition is completely ignorant of how electronics manufacturing works and of the time it takes to develop new technology and sell off existing inventory.

Even though plasma televisions are becoming more efficient, this rule would amount to a death knell for plasmas.

Regulators are also, believe it or not, considering putting out a death warrant on black vehicles.

The California Air Resources Board has taken initial steps toward a ban on the sale of new vehicles painted black or other dark hues.

Why? Because they get so hot inside on sunny days, requiring more use of air conditioning.

What's next – banning people from wearing wool on warm days?

It could happen. Zealotry is not conducive to common sense. Or to good government. Or to liberty.

It’s not the wine.......NOT THE WINE. Leave the wine alone......it’s the only avenue we have to numb the feeling of being used. California, sad to say, is my home state. It is fast becoming my Communist State.

CA voters voted for him.

They deserve what they get, not any sympathy from me.

If you’re going to ban black guns, why not ban black vehicles?

Not all Californians voted for him. We don’t look for sympathy.......maybe a little understanding about what the good people here are going through.

I know this is going to sound weird, but I'm glad to see them going completely loony. My fear was that with complete control they would begin incrementing their plans in small packages that the majority of people would rationalize away. By going so over the top so soon they have guaranteed a backlash. Now the only question is if there are still enough people left who haven’t drunk the kool-aid to stop them.

I didn't vote for Obummer, the Marxist, either. In fact, I was telling my friends that he is a Marxist and the most dangerous man in the world, more dangerous than any foreign threat, long before the election.

So I am due sympathy? I should ask for sympathy?

No. I only ask that everyone wake up, get mad and do something about it.

Non violent. Within our laws.

Like write all of your congress critters two or three times a week, try to organize a multimillion man march on DC...

Whatever, but do something.

I have not heard of conservatives in CA doing any more than wring their hands.

Before you flame me, I did not say CA is dong no more than wringing their hands, it is just that I have not heard of it.

What are conservatives in CA doing?

One problem that Conservatives have in California is that liberals in the Los Angeles area and San Francisco area, outnumber the Conservatives in the state. Thereby controlling the vote. That is why some are calling for the splitting of the state. Most likely will never happen but, never say never. Right?

I wrote the Air Resource Board regarding the ban on Black cars and requirement for reflective windows (to block infrared heat). I asked if the bans would apply to non-AirConditioned cars. (After all this ban was made to reduce AC needs) Here is the Air Resource Boards reply about no-AC car exemptions:

“We do not currently have provisions to exempt cars not equipped with AC.”

Wait this was all about reducing gasoline use by cutting down on the need for AC, why is this applied to non-AC cars??????

When i asked about how this would effect convertible cars and there Faberge tops, the reply is that the ruling applies to convertible tops also. So no more black fabric tops!!!! I asked about how this ruling applies to convertible top rear windows (backlights) that are the soft vinyl types that fold, the air resource board didn't get that one, and told me that polycarbonate can be used for this application (but polycarbonate is NOT flexible like the vinyl)

is there no sanity left???

Most all states eventually do things EXACTLY as Kalifornia does.

Make no mistake. If the possiblity exists, government will seek to control even the smallest, even seemingly insignificant, parts of our lives. In short: our government and “leaders” are against FREEDOM.

On the same convoluted premise that darker = hotter = need more AC, does this also mean that people with darker skin tones will have to pay more taxes?

Will it start being illegal to get a tan?

It is not always sunny in california, in the winter time it gets very very cold in places, and at nite there is no sun.. so I would guess more than half the time this eliminating the black auto would be useless,.. just another wacko rule and no doubt raise money some where..

“few states do things like California does”

Unfortunately for me I live in MA.
Whatever lame brained idea that sprouts out of CA usually soon makes it to MA.
