Administration Delays Change to Military's 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' Policy
FoxNews ^ | 3/29/09 | Bill Sammon

Posted on 03/29/2009 6:27:55 PM PDT by Jean S

A change to the controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy toward gays in the military will be delayed despite promises by the Obama administration to overturn the rule, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Sunday.

"The president and I feel like we've got a lot on our plates right now and let's push that one down the road a little bit," Gates told "FOX News Sunday."

In January, President Obama's spokesman, Robert Gibbs, was asked whether his boss would overturn "don't ask, don't tell.” Gibbs' reply -- videotaped for YouTube -- was unequivocal.

"You don't hear politicians give a one-word answer much. But it's 'Yes,'" Gibbs said.

But Gates now says the Pentagon will continue to enforce the existing policy, which bars service members from proclaiming their sexual orientation and commanding officers from asking about it. However, the policy states that if it becomes known that a service member is gay, he or she is to be removed from the military.

You will find only a handful of GOPers that will fight back on this once Obama rolls it out.

The four State Partnerships in the US Central Command (USCENTCOM) AOR are:
Arizona – Kazakhstan Louisiana – Uzbekistan
Montana – Kyrgyzstan Nevada - Turkmenistan
The eight State Partnerships in the US Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) AOR are:
Florida – Venezuela Kentucky – Ecuador
Mississippi - Bolivia Missouri – Panama
Puerto Rico – Honduras West Virginia – Peru
Louisiana & New Hampshire – Belize
Washington, D.C. - Jamaica
Illinois – Poland Indiana – Slovakia
Maryland – Estonia Michigan – Latvia Minnesota – Croatia North Carolina – Moldova
Ohio – Hungary Pennsylvania – Lithuania
South Carolina – Albania Tennessee – Bulgaria
Utah – Belarus Vermont – Macedonia
Texas & Nebraska – Czech Republic
The one State Partnership in the US Pacific Command (USPACOM) AOR is Hawaii – Philippines.
The State Partners actively participate in a host of engagement activities, ranging from bilateral training and familiarization events, to exercises, to fellowship-style internships, to civic leader visits.
All activities are coordinated through the Theater Commanders-in-Chief and the US Ambassadors’ country teams, and other agencies as appropriate, to ensure that National Guard support is tailored optimally to US and country requirements.security
environment.
The value of the SPP is its ability to focus the attention of a small part of the Department of Defense (DoD)—a State National Guard—on a single country or region in support of US Government policies. This concentrated focus allows for the development of long term personal relationships and a mechanism to catalyze support from outside the DoD which otherwise would not occur but nevertheless complements US policy. The optimum SPP partnership is one in which: the Host Nation professes genuine interest in Partnership; US and Theater engagement objectives are satisfied; the Force Protection risk is low; a minimum of additional resources is required to execute engagement; and National Guard core engagement competencies, particularly military support to civil authority (MSCA), are heavily incorporated.
Today, a total of 30 US states and one territory are partnered with 29 countries around the world.
The 17 State Partnerships in the USEUCOM Area of Responsibility (AOR) are:
Alabama – Romania
California & Kansas – Ukraine
Colorado – Slovenia Georgia – Republic of Georgia
State Partnership Program (SPP) US European Command’s SPP background info paper
Information Paper
The National Guard State Partnership Program (SPP) links US states with partner countries’ defense ministries and other government agencies, primarily through the vehicle of the States’ National Guards, for the purpose of improving bilateral relations with the US. The program’s goals reflect an evolving international affairs mission for the National Guard, and are to promote regional stability and civil-military relationships in support of US policy objectives.
The SPP was established following the National Guard Bureau’s (NGB) proposal in the Spring of 1993 to pair State National Guards with the Baltic Countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. The NGB proposal was prompted by CINCEUR’s Jan 93 decision to staff the Military Liaison Teams (MLTs) in the Baltics with Reserve Component personnel, in order avoid sending a provocative signal to the Russian Federation that might have been caused by assigning Active Duty soldiers. The SPP thus began as a bilateral military-to-military contact program with which to engage the countries of central and eastern Europe, and is a direct outgrowth of US European Command’s (USEUCOM) Joint Contact Team Program (JCTP): It since has grown far beyond JCTP and become a hybrid engagement tool, allowing interaction in social and economic—as well as military—spheres. The SPP actively supports the National Military Strategy’s mandate to shape the international security

All the fairydiddlers could be sent on liaison duty with our NATO allies and mohammedan friends and neighbors, who would be delighted by such a fortunate turn of events, leaving our warrior ranks the way they have been, are and need to be if our objective continues to be to kick some enemy A$$, as opposed to just playing with it.

That’s true but look on the bright side. Once the homosexuals can legally flit around on military bases in their boas and tutus, there is nothing else left for them to fight with the military over. They’ll stop enlisting in the military, “mission accomplished” and move on to something else.

I wish that were the case, but I don’t think so. The homosexuals are big at pushing the envelope in trying to outrage people and won’t give up so easily.

A military base will not have the same demeanor with transvestites and transexuals insisting on wearing women’s uniforms as some kind of “civil right”.

They have determined that their proposed “change” will cause open revolt in throughout the military, and they could do without anything like that at this time. Even a blind squirrel...

The lefties will be outraged!!

One issue I want to clarify concerns President Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation’s military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share. As we begin the final phase of this campaign, I need your support more than ever. By working together, we will achieve the goals we share for Massachusetts and our Nation.

Sincerely,

W. Mitt Romney

I completely agree. I want people who can physically kick ass and take names. I also think the same of the police & fire departments.

I want someone showing up in an emergency who can carry another person or chase down a criminal.

No, it’ll never end with these people unless the receive the “Sodom and Gamorrah Treatment.” Once they secure legitimacy in the ranks they’ll turn on the chaplain corps and ensure the sin of homosexuality is never again mentioned in a religeous service. Some chaplains will quit, others will tow the line but a precedent will be set for censorship of the pulpit.

It already has.... USAF Chaplains can't mention Jesus by name. I haven't heard the Navy ones (they do service for Marines too) invoke the name of Christ either.

How exactly do we do this? Discharge any soldier that feels uncomfortable with gays? Until the only soldiers left to defend our country from the enemy is... gays and metrosexuals?

When did this happen? (re: USAF)

Yes. This probably goes for petty criminals and pot smokers as well. It won’t be an issue on the front line. Back in garrison, pot smokers, barracks thieves and sodomites start causing discipline problems and are a threat to good order. Going IN with these people also ensures reduced morale.

It is my understanding that the regulation of the military is a power of Congress and that both the UCMJ and all the regulations of all the services find their ultimate approval/disapproval in Congress.

The battlefield command and daily disposition of forces is the domain of the commander in chief.

The regulation is the domain of the legislative.

Jude, do you agree with that interpretation?

I agree, but there were times in history when that would not have been so. I wonder whatever happened to the "fightin' homosexuals" of the past? We know the ancient Greeks produced some great warriors who were either homosexual or bisexual. The Emperor Trajan is regarded as a great Roman military leader, but reportedly had a weakness for boys. As late as the Victorian period, there were many capable generals who were (allegedly) homosexual or at least latent homosexuals (Gordon of Khartoum, Hector "Fightin' Mac" MacDonald, Lord Kitchener).

Todays homos are just a bunch of affected lisping girly-men with whom no one would want to share a tent or a foxhole or a shower.

You speak like a man who knows how things really work in the military. You’ve obviously served our country. God bless you.

I should have and would have gone to West Point or the Naval Academy if I weren’t such a lazy high school student back in the 80’s.

War doesn’t scare me. Worst case scenario....Dying on the field with honor would have spared me having to see this great country become a second world nation.

Now that’s scary.

As a reservist, my biggest fear by far is that homosexuals serving openly would create another PC monster with manadatory sensitivity training, etc so nobody offends them. How many sexual predelictions are we going to give special status too? Does the S&M crowd get special mention, the exhibitionists?
