A state law prevents new nuclear power plants from being built in Minnesota, and some say that means nuclear can't even be part of a discussion about the state's future energy needs.
An effort to change that suffered a setback Thursday, when members of a House energy committee voted down a bill that would lift the ban.
The 9-12 vote came after two days of hearings in which lawmakers heard testimony from more than two dozen people, including national experts, environmentalists, the nuclear industry and people who live near Minnesota's two existing nuclear plants.
While the measure still could be brought up as an amendment on the House floor, similar votes in recent years have failed. And as legislative deadlines approach, the Senate version of the bill hasn't yet been scheduled for a committee vote.
Supporters of lifting the ban have been careful to note that no new nuclear facilities are being proposed in Minnesota right now, and they say it isn't likely a law change would result immediately in nuclear proposals. No utilities testified at the hearings.

Dirt worship.
These dimwits want electric cars....but as usual...they don’t want the sources to power a nation of electric cars.
Anyone for electric rates of $2 per kwh?
Seriously,I love the idea of all that sunshine that simply makes my attic(and whole house) too hot in summer instead powering my appliances and car.It only requires installing enough solar panels, batteries, inverters, and new appliances including the electric car, lawn tools, etc. that the increased mortgage payment would be another $1000 a month for the next 30 years.
On second thought,....coal and nukes are way cheaper!
Foe a minute there, I thought you were Obama!.LOL
Nothing our freak overlards are promoting is in anyway possible for a long time to come....oh wait....thats what they want.
My solar panels are worried about the fact that the sun is going to have a storm and kill us all soon. /s
There's something wrong with that but I just can't quite articulate what it is...
From the people who elected Al Franken, we should not be surprised at anything they do.
Better get out the sweaters and paper bags. (Only you folks who lived through the Carter debacle will grasp that one.)
