A tornado swept through central Mississippi as residents slept early Thursday morning, injuring at least 20 people and damaging more than 60 buildings, including a church and a water treatment plant, state emergency management officials said.

Even as residents of rural Simpson County dug out, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency warned that an onslaught of tempestuous spring weather was likely to continue through Saturday morning in the form of even stronger tornadoes, flooding and hail, said Greg Flynn, an agency spokesman.

I was in jackson about a week after the tornado here. NE jackson residential streets were simply full of segmented large trees awaiting removal - could not see the curb on most of many residential streets. Have never seen anything like it besides Katrina debris field MS GC.

There was an E-F1 tornado yesterday morning. Touched down about 10-12 miles from here in Clarkdale. No injuries. Damaged a couple of buildings. Downed trees and electric out.

"At about 10:30 a.m. a super cell in a line of thunderstorms moving through Lauderdale County spawned the tornado that caused moderate to heavy damage to homes in the Sam Gray Road area. The storm then moved across Highway 145 and then across Highway 45 South to Mitchum Bottom Road. Finally the storm cut across the Causeyville and Zero communities where it left downed power lines and toppled trees."

That’s life in Mississippi. It’s ground zero where tornados are concerned. Still, I loved living there.

I lived in Xenia OH for the famous Xenia Tornado in 1974. They still talk about that on the Whether Channel.

I can’t believe some of those folks along the Red River are still sitting there in their houses! Talk about denial.

They must have a death wish.

As a kid, during a soccer tournament in Brandon, MS (Rankin County, where your photo was taken) we were rushed to a ditch and jumped in as a tornado flew over.

Snakes and toads and smelly water rained down on us.

Up there with my least favorite memories of life.

Looks like that could be the field I was on -— who knows, this was in the early 1970s.

How did Madison fair through all of this? Seems those storms keep going right through the capital area.
