McDonald's Tests Big Mac in a Tortilla Fast-Food Giant Rolls Out Snack Wrap Mac in Markets Including Houston, Wisconsin

By Emily Bryson York

Published: March 23, 2009

CHICAGO (AdAge.com) -- McDonald's might have to come up with a new "two all-beef patties" jingle for its newest product. The chain is testing the Snack Wrap Mac, which puts a new spin on the old classic: half a beef patty, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions -- wrapped in a flour tortilla.

McDonald's spokeswoman Danya Proud said the $1.49 wrap is being sold in an "advertised test" in several U.S. markets, including Houston. About 400 of the chain's 14,000 locations are testing it.

Another test market is Wisconsin, said Darren Tristano, exec VP of Technomic. "They're good," he said, adding, "It makes sense. They're cheaper than a Big Mac. It tastes like a Big Mac with a tortilla."

Ms. Proud said results so far have been "great." Tamping down expectations for when the product may be more widely available, she said, "It is just a test, and no final decisions have been made."

Success with other wraps McDonald's introduced chicken snack wraps a few years ago in an effort to draw more traffic between lunch and dinner. They've been a huge success, both as snacks and add-ons to full meals. This is the chain's first wrap with beef.

McDonald's competitors, meanwhile, are launching mini burgers. Burger King recently introduced slider-style burger "shots." Steak 'n Shake followed with "steakburger shots."

McDonald's big launch for the year, of course, will be its line of McCafe drinks including lattes and cappuccinos. Many owner-operators have been undergoing renovations to offer the products for several years. The chain is expected to begin national advertising in May.

Amazing! A Big Mac in a tortilla tastes just like ... a Big Mac in a tortilla.

I’m waiting for them to put them in a blender so I can just suck them out of a cup with a straw.

Not so much... I don't go to McDs anymore since English isn't a primary language nowadays in most of them. Now with Big Mac tortillas, that adds more reason to continue driving by.

Me, too. But I'm in my 30s, so I only got to experience the Burger Chef cheeseburger and chocolate shake. I wasn't big enough for a Big Chef.

I remember eating at our local Burger Chef while they changed the outside sign to Hardees. 1984.

They are meh. Good if you want to eat on the road but other than that they don’t really replace the original.

A big mac in a tortilla would be a carne de sada(sp) with cheese and no salsa. When I run out of burger buns I will use corn tortillas and have at it

Eat yer creepy Whopper and shaddup....;-D

Didn’t they used to have a fish sandwich called something like The Whaler? I haven’t eaten fast food in probably 13 years so I’m sorta outta the loop.

[My last time was a Filet O’Fish with petrified cheese. That killed it for me]

IIRC, the Big Chef was served with a cardboard (or heavy paper) band around it to hold it together. Great burger, indeed!

A lost treasure of Americana, along with drive in movies.

The local Street Rod club held their weekly shows in the parking lot of the last BC in our area every Saturday night for *years* until, ironically, it was torn down and replaced by an Advance Auto Parts.

Sorry, but there is no way a Big Mac compares to carne asada. lol
I like the chicken wraps, but a burger in a tortilla? Might as well go to Taco Bell.

I don’t object to the tortilla. I object to the alleged beef burgers. There is something about McDonald’s burgers that I find distasteful.

There were no Burger Chefs in Dallas when I was a kid, as far as I know. I never got to eat there.

The only fast food I eat nowadays is Chick-Fil-A, and that only rarely. I guess I've lost my taste for fast food. Our local Keller's chain makes great burgers, but I hardly ever eat them any more -- I'm fat enough as it is! The only decent chain-restaurant burger is In-N-Out, anyway, and we don't have those here in Texas, either.

(The sandwich was called the "Big Shef", by the way.)

If I’m old enough to remember the chain, I’m old enough to forget how to spell it.....;D

Killed it for me when their help was not able to pronounce "hamburger."

Then tossed down a half eaten burger, and my German Shepherd sniffed it, and walked away.

I can out gross *that* tale.

Back in the early 80s, I was eating a BK burger and found a huge, black pubic hair *baked into* the bun.

I freaked out and ran back into BK.

They offered me *another* burger as “compensation”.

Not hardly!
