LOS ANGELES (AP) ― The nation's second-largest school district has voted to make Cesar Chavez's March 31 birthday a school holiday.
The school board resolution approved Tuesday calls for Superintendent Ramon Cortines to come up with a plan to drop another holiday in favor of the day off to honor the late United Farm Workers co-founder.
Board member Yolie Flores Aguilar, who introduced the resolution, says a school holiday honoring Chavez is long overdue.
The state Legislature adopted a bill in 2000 establishing March 31 as a state holiday.
It calls for schools to be closed if their school board agreed.

Would it not be so much better to keep the children in school and teach them a history lesson about Chavez for about an hour? Otherwise parents will have to find daycare because few non-government employees get the day off.
Just another holiday for the teachers. Not for anybody else.

Most business and city operations here in L.A. are closed on Monday. Perfect excuse for the govt furloughs. Of course, the old guard here in L.A. don’t call C Chavez Blvd by it’s name..they call it the army’ road.

Chavez was big on hunger strikes-maybe they can all honor him by skipping their meals that day....

Good call on Manson, I forgot about him. But I intentionally left out Bundy. After all, he was allegedly a Republican. No holidays for Republicans, even if they were mass murderers.

yep, what good is another holiday from school? Are the kids going to use that day off from school to attend events honoring the memory of Cesar Chavez? Will they learn about him? Will they learn he opposed illegal immigration? Or will they just goof off and play X-Box and watch cable TV all day???????
To: Dilbert San Diego; All
Will they learn he opposed illegal immigration?I don't think the leftists even know that he was opposed to illegal aliens. That won't stop them from exploiting his name.
