The linked article is in a paper I've never heard of, but that doesn't mean what they discuss can be dismissed. If you simply dismiss it, that will not in any way have an impact on those who take the article or the issue seriously. So, simply dismissing it is counter-productive.

Rather, I suggest that FReepers work together to try to figure out ways to undercut the issue raised in the article. Please come up with actual solutions (not jokes).

Note also that last I checked you can leave comments on some SPLC blog entries. Start a campaign to go there and point out how they’re factually or logically wrong in order to reduce their impact on others.

Dear Friends and fellow FReepers, I want to tell you what has transpired. Every now and then we get a chance to make things right.

In 2003 I did some crude joking on Freerepublic. You folks are correct, you need to watch what you say. I truly believe that telling the truth is the way to live.

I was called to task by some folks who sponored a Congressional 5th district reception last night.

I made some derogatory comments, that I had to take responsibility for. I will not make excuses for my bad behavior.

I had a chance to apologize to people I hurt.

They were cordial and accepted my apology and I can move on now.

Also A Muslim man who is my good friend called me. We talked about some other stupid comments I made and I had the opportunity to take responsibility for what I said. Actually this campaign is not as important to me as doing the right thing when I screw up and hurt people and my friends.

I am learning some hard lessons and so be it. We all have joked and said stupid things. I am having a human experience.

The fact that I am having some time to communicate and make things right really means a lot to me. I am humbled by the response of the people who feel offended. They have offered me their forgivness, which I am thankful for.

I also recall your horrifying story about how you were trying to honor a fallen friend when radicals came out of nowhere accusing you of being a “race traitor” and dissing you for putting America above Mexico.
