She might very well think that, but she didn’t say that on this occasion. If you read the whole article, it seems clear that her message was, “People say stupid things, so don’t listen. Just ignore them, do well in school, and stay out of trouble.” It’s a good message.
Sheesh, I can’t believe I’m spending time defending Michelle, but I just think it’s overkill when we jump on every little thing these people do. As far as I can tell from the article, she did nothing wrong here.
My point is that she only experienced racism at the hands of blacks.
I wonder what the outcry would be if Laura bush said she was teased for talking like a black girl? Hmmm?
That is RIDICULOUS! I don’t expect my child’s english teacher to teach my kids how to ‘properly’ use “reckon” and “over yonder” because we have said it for generations in the south. Good grief.
I also have an Upper Midwestern accent and the blacks around my area also mock me for it. However, when I’m with my GF, we mock them back with fake sounding Ebonics and pretty much make them feel like uneducated twits. It’s funny to watch. Especially when they get violent and then realize that I carry pepper spray.
You know, I absolutely agree with you.
I despise this woman. Every time she is held out to us as some kind of icon, I get nauseous. I hate that she hates America.
But, this time, as I read what she said, I experienced my first warm feelings toward her.
She went into an inner city school, and told the black students to do well and achieve, and to not let other black kids discourage them from doing so. It is a huge problem that black kids who try to achieve are taunted for “acting white.” Only a black woman could have said this to them. If any black teenagers paid attention, she did a good thing.
That was my interpretation too. My daughter attended an all girls Catholic school from kindergarten through twelfth grade, and among her black classmates this very thing was a common complaint. They were often derided by their other friends for "putting on airs" and "wanting to be white" just because they spoke properly. They were just kids and that sort of thing was sometimes pretty hard for them to take from others of their age.

I have, and I bought the book as a Christmas gift to a black young lady living in a home for troubled youth here in Kennesaw, GA. She asked for books by black authors, so I included that one in the box of books I gave her.
