A bill tripling the size of the AmeriCorps program that is scheduled for a House vote Wednesday would also create fellowships for people 55 and older and a separate Summer of Service program for middle and high school student volunteers....
Sens. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, and Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., have introduced a similar measure that also adds 175,000 positions to AmeriCorps. A Senate committee is scheduled to vote on its legislation on Wednesday and it could come before the full Senate for a vote as early as next week.

Don't even use the term "volunteer" for these government workers. It is just another form of welfare.
Fellowships for people over 55, that should be demanded that every one in congress quit jobs and be forced to join..that would clean out a lot of the dead wood..

I called all the House Representatives from my area yesterday and asked them to vote “NO” on H.R. 1388.
I’d be in favor of compentency tests for Congress. I hate that there could be an “age” because there are some who are gone at 65 and others who are fine still at 80, just depends on your genes.

It is hard to imagine a more negative-in-results program than the Peace Corps but the Am Corps gives it a run for its money.
The Peace Corps’ Pretension was a great article published in El Salvador some years ago illustrating the negatives of that program.

Kilroy (OH) Would provide volunteers to supervise physical education classes at elementary and secondary schools, provide nutrition education to students, and supervise, organize, and manage after school physical activity/education programs. 7. Roskam (IL) Would require all authorized programs to be reviewed by the OMB’s Program Assessment Rating Tool; require GAO to do a study on the National Civilian Community Corps program; and, amend the underlying legislation to continue the annual evaluation requirement for the National Civilian Community Corps, not a single evaluation by 2014. 8. Markey, Betsy (CO) Would increase the operational support given to organizations for full-time individuals enrolled in an approved national service position. The amendment proposes increasing the support from $600 to $800 and from $800 to $1000 if program supports at least 50 percent disadvantaged youth (10 minutes)
9. Hill (IN) Would denote that sending care packages to soldiers deployed in combat zones overseas is included as an eligible service program. (10 minutes)

This latest right after he supported allowing D.C. to have an unConstitutional seat in the House along with another seat for his state. A bonehead move, since he would have gotten the new seat soon anyway based on the Constitution.

With unemployment rising all Congresscritters will vote to take 175,000 people out of the labor market. Heck they may even count them as employed and make the unemployment rate appear artificially low.
Of course we could use 175,000 more military personnel. But alas we will probably get this. The silver lining is most of them will grow up and know from the inside about such government programs.
